A BROADCAST SUMMARY CREATION METHOD FOR TELEVISIONS COMPRISING A DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDERtechnıcal fıeld
The present invention relates to a broadcast summary creation method for digital video recorders, in particular for televisions comprising a digital video recorder.
prıor art
By means of digital video recorders and in particular televisions comprising a digital video recorder, radio/TV broadcasts can be recorded on a memory connected to the digital video recorder/television. Recording methods of the prior art are divided into three, namely, one-touch recording, time shift recording, and permanent time shift recording. In one-touch recording, the present broadcast being viewed is permanently recorded on a memory upon a user pressing the record button of a controller. Later (hour, date) recording can also be performed in one-touch recording. Time shift recording is used when a user desires to discontinue viewing a TV broadcast. For instance, time shift recording enables a user to pause a TV broadcast when a ringing phone or a door being knocked interrupts a watching session, and then to resume the watching session from where it was left off, when desired. When a user presses the time shift mode record button of a controller, the TV broadcast is paused, and recording of the TV broadcast begins simultaneously. When the user presses the time shift button again, he/she resumes watching the program through the recorded TV broadcast. In permanent time shift recording, when a TV broadcast is switched, the previous TV broadcast being watched begins to be recorded automatically. Recording continues if the TV broadcast is switched again before a selected duration, and the previous broadcast begins to be recorded if the TV broadcast is switched again after a selected duration. Thus, the TV broadcast being previously watched is not missed while the user is surfing between TV broadcasts. The recordings preformed by time shifting and permanent time shifting are recorded in temporary memory units. The recording is automatically deleted after the user terminates recording and the user becomes unable to watch the recording again.
From time to time, users need to obtain summaries of TV broadcasts and in particular of their favorite TV broadcasts. For instance, a user may desire to obtain a summary of a previously broadcast program to watch it again and to review it if that TV broadcast refers to a subject of interest, such as a venue in a documentary, a device/technology presentation in a technology program, a work of art or an artist in a culture and arts program, or a food recipe. None of the TV broadcast recording methods of the prior art is able to make a permanent recording concerning the past. Therefore, it would not be possible for a user to obtain a specific summary of the TV broadcast being watched. Even when an incidentally watched program is permanently recorded by means of one-touch recording method, in order to obtain the summary of a desired TV broadcast, a user has to determine the recording time of said desired TV broadcast and edit the present recording. Users are discouraged from obtaining a TV broadcast summary due to time consuming and non-user friendly procedures such as determining the recording time of a summary segment and editing the recording.
The publication no. US8577205B2 discloses a digital video recorder capable of digital recording, using time shift recording method for recording TV broadcasts.
The publication no. US20030053798A1 discloses a personal video recorder capable of digital recording, using time shift recording method to temporarily record a TV broadcast.
The publication no. US20120257874A1 discloses a personal video recorder capable of digital recording and interacting with a user, through which a TV broadcast can be paused and rewound.
The publication no. WO2012057722A1 discloses a system and a method in which time shift recording method is used for TV broadcasts, capable of pausing rewinding a broadcast.
In the broadcast summary creation method of the application for digital video recorders, a retrospective recording for a selected duration of a TV broadcast being watched is permanently recorded. The users can thus record and list summaries of a TV broadcast they have watched. Consequently, users are not obliged to perform time consuming and non-user friendly procedures of determining the recording time of a summary segment and editing the recording.
brıef descrıptiın of the ınventıon
The aim of the present invention is to realize a broadcast summary creation method for digital video recorders and in particular for televisions comprising a digital video recorder, in which a retrospective recording for a selected duration of a TV broadcast being watched is permanently recorded, thereby enabling the users to record and list summary videos of TV broadcasts they have watched, and consequently saving the users from time consuming and non-user friendly procedures of determining the recording time of a summary segment and editing the recording.
detaıled descrıptıon of the ınventıon
In an embodiment of the broadcast summary creation method of the application, for televisions comprising a digital video recorder, firstly, a continuous recording command is transmitted to a television for temporary and continuous recording of a TV broadcast being watched. Upon said command, temporary recording of the TV broadcast in a memory unit begins in order to create a temporary recording of said TV broadcast. Then, by means of a summary creation command, a summary video segment in a selected time interval retrospectively beginning from the moment at which the summary creation command is received, is cut from the TV broadcast temporary recording and permanently recorded in the memory unit. A new summary video segment is permanently recorded in the memory unit with each new summary creation command. The memory unit to which the TV broadcast is temporarily recorded and the memory unit to which the summary video segment is recorded may preferably be discrete.
In this embodiment of the method of the application, when the summary creation command is transmitted to the television, the selected time interval is reflected on the television screen by a graphic interface. In this embodiment, the selected time interval can be changed by means of said interface and changing commands.
In another embodiment of the method of the application, a summary recording command is transmitted to the television to temporarily record a TV broadcast being watched. Upon said command, recording of said TV broadcast to the memory unit begins in a selected time interval loop. Then, upon a summary creation command, the temporarily recorded TV broadcast is permanently recorded as a summary video in the memory unit. With each new summary creation command, a new temporarily recorded TV broadcast is permanently recorded as a new summary video in the memory unit. The selected time interval loop means temporarily recording of the present TV broadcast for the last selected time interval. For example, in an embodiment in which the selected time interval is 50 seconds, the final 50 seconds of the present TV broadcast is recorded in the memory unit. At the 100th second of a TV broadcast, the temporarily recorded summary video would comprise the interval between 50th and 100th seconds of said TV broadcast. At the 120th second of said TV broadcast, the temporarily recorded summary video will comprise the interval between 70th and 120th seconds of said TV broadcast. By this, internal memory units with limited memory space such as RAM, ROM memory units are enabled to be used for long watching durations of the user or high definition temporary recordings (as they require a high memory space for temporary recording). Permanent recording of summary videos to a discrete memory unit is accelerated thanks to the data transmission speeds of said memory units. According to preference, the memory unit to which the TV broadcast is temporarily recorded and the memory unit to which the summary video segment is recorded may be discrete.
In this embodiment of the method of the application, when the summary recording command is transmitted to the television, the selected time interval loop value is reflected on the television screen by a graphic interface. In this embodiment, the selected time interval loop value can be changed by means of said interface and changing commands.
Non-limiting exemplary memory units of the invention may be HDD or SSD. The memory unit may be external or internal. In an embodiment of the invention, the television comprises a data communication interface (BUS) for connecting external memory units. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the data communication interface is USB.
In the embodiments of the method of the application, the permanently recorded videos are preferably archived using the program information (e.g. program name, broadcaster name, date, etc.) from a TV broadcast guide (electronic program guide (EPC)).
In the embodiments of the method of the application, the commands are preferably transmitted to the television by a controller.
