To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Srino, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tabulating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. 7
The invention disclosed in this application relates broadly to typewriting machines and specifically to tabulating mechanism for determining relative lateral positions of the platen carriage.
The principal construct a tabulating mechanism for. typewriting machinm wherein the printing mech anisms are locked in inoperative position when a tabulating key is depressed to cause the carriage to jump to a predetermined position.
Another object of this invention is to construct a tabulating mechanism wherein the tabulator key is. locked down after having been depressed to actuate the tabulating devices, until the platen carriage has reached a predetermined position.
Another ob'ect of this invention is to con-- struct a tabulating mechanism in which the platen carriage is disconnected from the control of the escapement devices when a tabulating key is depressed, and is automatically thrown under control of the escapement mechanisms when the carriage has reached a predetermined point in its travel.
Another object of this invention is to construct a tabulating device in which a brake mechanism is automatically thrown into operation by the actuator stop carrier to control the force of the driving spring when a tabulating stop is positioned.
Another object of this invention is to construct a tabulat-ing mechanism wherein the tabulating stop is locked in position when a tabulating key is depressed, and is automatically unlocked by means of a cam act-uating stop before the adjustable stop and the tabulating stop come in contact.
Another object of this invention is to con struct an adjustable stop member for tabulating mechanism, in horse-shoe form, one portion of said adjustable stop being formed with a cam actuating faceand another portion of said stop being formed with a tabulating face. i
Another object of this invention is to conobject of this invention is to struct a removable index scale adapted to cooperate with tabulating keys of the typewriting machine.
Still other and further objects of this invention will in part be obvious and will in partbe pointed out in the specification hereinafter following by reference to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals are used to indicate like parts throughout the several figures, and the scope of the invention will be indicated by the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a rear view of a typewriting machine showing the position of the tabulating mechanism. Fig.2 is a top View of the typewriti'ng machine illustrating the tabulating rack and adjustable stop mounted thereupon. Referring particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, wherein are illustrated many parts of the typewriting machine that do not specifically cotiperate with the tabulating mechanism, these parts of the typewriting machine which do not specifically coijperate with the tabulating mechanism are covered by applications for patent which are co-pending with this application, and these particular parts will be referred to generally in the specification hereinafter.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of this application, the mainframe is comprised of side members 1, which are connected at their rear portion by means of arear bar 2, and at their front portion by means of a front bar (not illustrated in the drawings). Supporting posts 4 and 5, are formed integral with the side members 1, and carry upon their upper ends a top plate 6, which is attached to the supporting posts 4 and 5, by means of a screw 7, or any wellknown device for interlocking metallic parts. Key levers 8, are pivotally mounted in the machine frame and terminate at their forward endsin key caps 9. Auniversal bar 10, is mounted in such relation as to be adapted tobe actuated each time one of the key levers 8 is depressed. A platen carriage mechanism 11, is mounted for reciprocation upon the top plate 6, and is adapted to carry acylindrical platen 12, which is fitted withline spacing mechanism 14. Ribbon spools 15 and 16 are mounted for rotation upon the top plate 6, and are adapted to carry a ribbon 17, which passes through aribbon vibrator 18, which is located at the printing point. A back spacingdog 19, is mounted upon the top plate 6, and is adapted to cooperate with aback spacing rack 20, which is carried upon the platen carriage 11.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 2 to 16 inclusive, tabulatingkeys 21, are mounted upon apivotal support 22, which is mounted in the machine frame, and are connected at their rear end with vertical tabulator stopcarriers 24, that are provided withslots 25, which cooperate with astud bolt 26, in such manner as to guide thestop carriers 24 when they are reciprocated by means of the tabulatingkeys 21. are attached to the tabulatingkeys 21, in such manner as to cause the parts to resume normal position when pressure is released from the tabulating keys. Thetabulator stop carriers 24, are provided withcontact shelves 27, which are adapted to lie beneath a releasingbail 28, and abraking bail 29, both of which are pivotally mounted upon a bracket.member 30, which is screwed fast to the under middle portion of the top plate 6. The releasingbail 28, is provided with avertical portion 31. A release actuating Smallcoiled springs 23,
dog 32, is pivotally mounted by means of astud screw 34, upon thevertical portion 31 of the releasingbail 28, and is normally maintained in horizontal position by means of astop pin 35, which coiiperates with the upper wall of anopening 36 formed in about the middle port-ion'of therelease actuating dog 32. Anescapement rack 37, is operatively connected with a drivingshaft 38, upon which is arranged a driving spring (not shown), for propelling the platen carriage '11. The driving shaft 88, is operatively connected with the platen carriage by means of rack and pinion mechanisms (not shown). A holdingdog 39 and anescapement dog 40, are pivotally mounted in such manner as to cooperate with the escapement rack to control the movement of the platen carriage for letter spacing. The holdingdog 39, is provided with downwardly dependingarms 41 and 42, which are adapted to overlie thetail portion 44 of theescapement dog 40. The downwardly dependingarm 42 of the holding dog, is provided with anadjustable stop screw 45, which is normally held in contact with thetail portion 44 of the escapement dog, by means of a small coiledspring 46. A similar coiled spring 47, normally maintains theescapement dog 40 in contact with astop pin 48, thus maintaining theescapement dog 40 out of contact with theescapement rack 37, and the holdingdog 39 in contact with theescapement rack 37. Therelease actuating dog 32, is adapted to abut against the downwardly depending arm 41, of the holdingdog 39, in such manner that when the releasingbail 38 is lifted, the nose of the release actuating.dog 32 abutting against the downwardly depending arm 41, will cause the holdingdog 39 to be swung upon its pivot in such manner as to move the holdingdog 39 out of the path of the teeth of theescapement rack 37, thus permitting the carriage to move freely under the propelling force of the driving spring.
Thebraking bail 29, is provided with a vertical portion 49, to which is pivotally mounted abrake-shoe 50, which normally is maintained against a stop 51 carried upon the vertical portion 49, by means of a small coiled spring 52. The brake-shoe 50, is adapted to coiiperate with abrake disk 54, which is fixedly mounted upon the driving shaft-38, when the braking bail is lifted. Thetabulator stop carrier 24, terminates at its upper end in a ta-bulatin stop 55 and a releasingcam 56 as shown in Fig. 4. The rear edges of the t-abulat-orsto carriers 24, are provided with locking notc es 57 which are adapted to engage a locking plate 58,
under the influence ofcoiled springs 59, when the tabulator stopcarriers 24 are lifted by means of the tabulatingkeys 21. Adjustable stops 60, are adapted to cooperinto the path of the '40 anechanism,
ate and be positioned in any of theadjustment notches 61, that are formed in a tabulatingbar 62, that is fixedly mounted in the rear of the platen carriage frame 11. The adjustable stops 60, are formed in the shape of a distorted horse-shoe and comprise astop face 64, aresilent spring portion 65, and acam actuator 66. The releasingbail 28, is provided'on its lower face near its pivot, with an actuating face 67, which is adapted to operate with a pivoted lockingdog carrier 68, which carries a lockingstop 69,'that is adapted to be positioned in the path of anoscillating stop 70, carried by theuniversal bar 10, when the releasing bail is lifted.
The operation of the tabulating device is as follows :When any one of the tabulatingkeys 21 are depressed, a particular tabulator stop carrier 24, which is connected with thedepressed key 21, is lifted in a vertical direction until the locking notch 67, is thrown into engagement with the locking plate 58. As thetabulator stop carrier 24; is raised,theacontact shelves 27 lift the releasing bail- 28 and also thebraking bail 29. The releasingbail 28, by means of therelease actuating dog 32, contacting with the depending arm 41, of the holdingdog 39, releases the carriage mechanisms from control of theescapement rack 37. Simultaneously with the releasing of the escapement the brake-shoe 60, is forced into position against thebrake disk 54, and the high speed of the moving carriage is thus materially reduced. As the tabulator stop carrier 24: is moved upward, the tabulating stop 55 and the releasingcam 56, are movedstop face 64 and thecam actuator 66. It will-also be noted that as the releasingbail 28 is lifted, the lockingstop 69, is moved into the path of theoscillating stop 70, thus effectively locking the printing mechanisms and printing keys when thetabulating mechanism is actuated. Immediately as the carriage mechanisms are permitted to move under the influence of the driving spring, the platen carriage is reciprocated until thecam actuator 66 engages the releasingcam 56, which causes the tabula-tor stop carrier 24, to be moved outwardly and thus releases the lockingnotch 57 from engagement with the locking plate 58. However, thestop face 64, engages the tabulating stop 55, so quickly after the releasing of the stop carrier from the locking mechanism, that the carrier has not had sufficient time to entirely remove the tabulating stop from the path of thestop face 64, and thus the main shock of stopping the carriage is transmitted to the tabulating stop 55. Almost immediately as the carriage is stopped, the tabulating stop 55 continues its downward path and drops away from thestop face 64. However, the construction and arrangement of parts are such that the holdingdog 39, is moved to reengage theescapement rack 37, before the tab ulating stop 55 has entirely left thestop face 64. It will be noted that when the tabulator stop carrier is once sufficiently depressed to release. the escapement mechanisms and position the tabulating stop until held or locked in operative position until the carriage has completed its run to bring the tabulating stop and the adjustable stop in contact, that immediately after contact of the tabulating stop and adjustable stop, the tabulating and escapement mechanisms will be returned to normal position, thus permitting the carriage to be again under control of a step-by-step escapement.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 17, 18 and 23, a modified form of the tabulating mechanisms are illustrated, which is particularly adapted for stopping the carriage in a definite columnar position in such manner that upon depressing a column stop the platen carriage may be moved to a position corresponding to a particular predetermined columnar position. The mechanism illus trated in Figs. 17, 18 and 23, is exactly similar to the tabulating mechanism hereinbefore described, with the exception of the lengths of the adjustable stops and the corresponding vertical positions of the tabulating stops and actuating cams, and therefore only these particular parts will be described hereinafter.
Referring particularly to Fig. 23, it will 3 be noted that acolumn stop 71, is the shorter of the several column stops, and thus when depressed will only rise a sufficient distance to engage the longeradjustable stop 72. A
similar relationship of parts exists between '5 the column stops 74, theadjustable stop 75, the column stop '76. the adjustable stop 77, the column stop 7 8 and theadjustable stop 79. The column stop mechanism is adapted to be substituted and built in in the type- 1 writing machinein place of the ordinary tabulating mechanism, where the typewriting machine is adapted for use for separate column work. Therefore, anadjustable abutment stud 80 is provided, which may be I screwed into the machine frame in such manner as to occupy a portion of the space which would normally be filled by tabulating stop carriers. As the major portion of the columnar stop device is identical with the major portion of the tabulating mechanism, further description of the specific elements is thought to be unnecessary.
Referring particularly to Figs. 4, 14, 15 and 16, a changeable or adjustable tabulator scale holder is illustrated, which comprises a small metallic holder-81, that is provided with attachingbrackets 82, which are adapted to be attached to the machine frame in rear of the key caps of the tabulating key levers 21. Themetallic holder 81, is adapted to hold a typewritten strip of paper upon which may be designated any particular formula or characters which are to be used in positions on the typewritten sheet, that would be determined by depressing a particular tabulating key lying immediately in front of the character shown on the typewritten strip, thus making a very convenient and easily changed standard formula for use in connection with the tabulating keys, without changing the characters that are designated upon the key caps.
Having thus described my invention what I desire to claim is 1. In a tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines, the combination of a key lever, a vertically moving stop carrier, said step carrier being provided with a locking notch, a locking plate, means'for causing said locking notch to engage said locking plate when the stop carrier is lifted, a tabulating stop carried by said stop carrier, a releasing cam carried by said stop carrier, a movable carriage, an adjustable stop carried by said movable carriage, and a cam actuator also carried by said movable carriage and adapted to actuate said releasing cam, substantially as described.

In a tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines, the combination of a key lover, a stop carrier operatively connected with said key lever, a contact shelf formed on said stop carrier, :1 releasing bail, a braking bail surrounding said releasing bail, said braking and said releasing bail being adapted to be operated by said contact shelf when said stop carrier is lifted, a tabulating stop on said stop carrier, said stop carrier being formed with a locking notch, a locking plate adapted to engage said locking notch, a releasing cam, a movable carriage, an adjustable stop, and an adjustable cam actuator carried by said movable carriage and adapted to actuate said releasing cam.
3. A tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines comprising a key lever, a stop carrier operatively connected with said key lever, a tabulating stop carried by said stop carrier, a locking plate, said stop carrier being provided with a locking notch, means for causing said locking plate and said looking notch to be interlocked when said stop carrier is lifted, a traveling carriage, an adjustable stop mounted on said traveling carriage, means for causing said locking plate and said locking notch to be disengaged before said adjustable stop contacts with said tabulating stop, an escapement mechanism, means for rendering said escapement mechanism inoperative when said key lever is depressed, a universal bar, and means for looking said universal bar when said escapement mechanism is rendered inoperative.
4C. In a tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines, the combination of a key lever, a stop carrier operatively connected with said key lever, an actuating shelf formed upon said stop carrier, an escapement mechanism, a releasing bail, a braking bail, said releasing bail and said braking bail being arranged in the path ofsaid actuating shelf, means operatively connected with said releasing bail in such manner as to .cause said escapement mechanism to be inoperative when said releasing bail is lift ed, a brake disk, a brake-shoe carried by said braking bail in such manner that said brakeshoe is forced in contact with said brake disk when said braking bail is lifted, substantially as described.
5. A tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines including a tabulator stop, a movable carriage, an adjustable stop mounted upon said movable carriage, means for locking said tabulator stop in operative position, means for unlocking said tabulator stop before said adjustable stop has contacted with said tabulator stop, substantially as described.
6. A tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines including a tabulator stop, a movable carriage, an adjustable stop carried by said movable carriage, means for mov ing said tabulator stop into the path of said adjustable stop, means for locking, said tabulator stop, and means carried by said movable carriage for unlocking said tabulator stop prior to the moment of contact of said tabulator stop and said adjustable stop.
7. A tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines including a tabulator stop, a movable carriage, an adjustable sto car ried by said movable carriage, means or positioning said tabulator stop in the path of said adjustable stop, means for locking said tabulator stop when moved into the path of said adjustable stop, a cam member operatively connected with said tabulator stop, and means carried by said movable carriage for cooperation with said cam member to unlock said tabulator stop.
8. A tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines including a tabulator stop, a movable carriage, an adjustable stop adapted to be carried by said movable carriage, means for positioning said tabulator stop in the path of said adjustable stop, means for locking said tabulator stop in the path of said adjustable stop, and means controlled by the movement of said carriage for unlocking said tabulator stop before said adjustable stop and said tabulator stop have met.
9. A tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines including a tabulator stop, a. movable carriage, a tabulator stop rack mounted 'in said movable carriage, an adjustable stop and a cam actuator adapted to be carried by said tabulator stop rack, said adjustable cam actuator being adapted to be %ated one notch of said rack in advance of said adjustable stop, a cam member operatively connected with said tabulator stop and arranged in the path of said cam actuator when said tabulator stop is locked in the path of said adjustable stop, an escapement mechanism, and means for rendering said escapement mechanism inoperative during the positioning of said tabulator stop in the path of said adjustable stop.
10. A tabulating mechanism for typewritingmachines including a movable carriage, a driving shaft operatively connected with said movable carriage, a brake disk fixedly connected with said driving shaft, a brake shoe, an escapement mechanism, means for rendering said escapement mechanism inoperative, a tabulator stop, an adjustable stop, means for operating said tabulator stop, means for connecting said brake-shoe with said tabulator stop operating means, and means for connecting said means for rendering said escapement mechanism inoperative with the operating mechanism for the tabulator stop, substantially as described.
11. As a new article of manufacture, an adjustable stop for tabulating mechanism comprising a stop face, a resilient horseshoe spring member, a cam actuator having vits operating face in a plane different from the plane of said stop face, said stop face and said cam actuator being connected by said resilient horseshoe s ring. 1
12. As a new article 0 manufacture, an
adjustable stop for tabulating mechanism comprising a stop face, a cam actuator having its operating face in a lane different from the plane of said stop face, and a resilient spring member connecting said stop face and said cam actuator.
13. A tabulator mechanism for typewriting machines including a machine frame, a movable carriage, adjustable stops of different lengths carried by said movable carriage, cam actuators of different lengths carried by said movable carriage, column stops of different lengths mounted in said machine frame, actuating cams of different lengths connected with said column stops, key levers operatively connected with said column stops, said column stops being provided with locking notches, a locking plate, means for causing said locking notches to be interlocked with said locking plate when said column stops are positioned in the path of said adjustable stops, substantially as described.
14. A tabulating mechanism for typewriting machines including a tabulator stop, a movable carriage, an adjustable stop, means for locking said tabulator stop in operative position, and means for unlocking said tabulator stop before said adjustable stop has contacted therewith.
