To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERRY C. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Markle, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hinges and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for temporarily hingedly securing objects in position, such as screen doors, or the like, and my object is to provide means for loosely mounting one section of the hinge to the door jamb or casing and a further object is to provide means for mounting the spring on the parts of the hinge, whereby when the door is released after being swung open against the tension of the spring the reaction thereof will close the door.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a detail )erspective view of a portion of a jamb and screen door showing my improved hinge applied to use. Fig. is a cross section of Fig. 1 on line 22, Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section taken on line 33, of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a door casing, which may be of the usual or any preferred form, such as is employed in connection with doorways, windows and the like, and 2 indicates a frame, to which is secured in the usual or any preferred manner,screen wire 3.
Theframe 2 is pivotally secured to the casing by means of my improvedhinge 4, theleaves 5 and 6 of which are provided at their meeting ends with overlappingears 7 and 8, respectively, said ears being provided with alining openings, through w rich extends a rod 9, and by which means the leaves are pivotally secured together.
T1e leaf 5 is secured to theframe 2 in any suitable manner, as by means ofscrews 10 and in order to readily disengage the frame from the casing when it is desired to store the same, or for other-reasons, I have provided means for readily securing theleaf 6 to the casing, which consists in providing theleaf 6 at its upper and lower edges withkeepers 11, which are adapted to extend over and engage anoffset stem 12 of asupport 13, the lower end of the support being secured to thecasing 1 in any preferred manner, as by introducingscrews 14 through the support and into the casing, the lower edge of theleaf 6 resting on ashoulder 15 formed by offsetting said stem from the support. In this manner it will be readily seen that by swinging theframe 2 to its open position and lifting the same bodily, thekeepers 1 1 will readily leave thestem 12, in which instance the door may be readily transported to any convenient point to be stored away, or the frame may be as readily attached to the casing by elevating the frame until theleaf 6 has reached a point above the upper end of thestem 12 and then lowering the frame until the stem has passed. through the clips and the lower edge of theleaf 6 rested upon theshoulder 15.
Thestem 12 is spaced a sufficient distance from the face of the casing 1' to snugly receive theleaf 6 and as said leaf extends at a distance to each side of the stem, the hinge will be securely held in position on the casing when properly mounted upon the stem.
In order to automatically swing theframe 2 to a closed position, after the same has been opened, I provide a standard 16, which is secured at its inner end to theleaf 5, while to the outer end of the standard is pivotally secured aplunger 17, the free end of the plunger being introduced through anangular extension 18 at the end of theleaf 6 and by placing the standard 16 in juxtaposition to the rod 9, it will be readily seen that the plunger 1'7 will be moved longitudinally through theextension 18 when the frame is swung outwardly or to an open position and by introducing acoil spring 19 around theplunger 17 between the standard 16 andextension 18, the longitudinal movement of the plunger will contract thespring 19 and increase the tension thereof, whereby when the door h'as been swung open and released, the reaction of the spring will immediately return the door to its closed position.
In applying the hinge to use, theleaf 5 is secured to thedoor 2 and thesupport 13 to the casing, when the door may be elevated to a point above the upper end of the stem and the stem entered through the keeper having a i to enter said keepers and removahly secure by lowering the door. By this construction, it Will be seen that the door may be readily attached to or removed from engagement With the casing and in view of the size of the support, it Will not be necessary to disengage the same from the lasing, as it will not matcrially mar the appearance of the casing, nor Will the same project a sullicient dis tance to cause an obstruction.
It Will further he seen that the various parts of the hinge may be quickly and cheaply constructed, as they can he formed 1 of heavy sheet metal and readily assembled.

of a support secured to a fixed object and stem extendin therefrom ada ted the leaf to said object.
2. A hinge of the class described comprising a pair of leaves, means for pivotally conmeeting said leaves together, one of said leaves having vertical alining keepers and a support secured to a door frame and having an offset stem adapted to be seated in said keepers, the oll'set portion of said support forming a shoulder, upon which rests the bottom edge of one of said leaves.
