Description

' PATBNTED AUG. 1a, 1908.v
No. 396,507.' V
T.v J.v ASCE. l SWEAT BAND. PPLIOATION'FWILED APB. e, 190s.
W/TNESSES Afro/Mfrs THEODORE J. ASCII, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SWE .AT-B AND Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Application filed April 6, 1908. Serial No. 425,398.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, THEODORF. J. AsoH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sweat-Band, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
The invention relates to hats and other head coverings, and its object is to provide a new and improved sweat band for head coverings, notably straw hats, soft and stifl hats and the like, and arranged to bear softly on the head of the wearer and to readily conform to the configuration of the wearers head.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of references indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a cross section of the improvement as applied to a hat g Fig. 2 is an enlarged face view of a portion of the improvement, and Fig. 3 is a rear face view of the same.
The sweat band A consists essentially of a facing B of thin sheet cork and a backing O of canvas or a like woven fabric material, the facing B and backing C being firmly united with each other throughout their length and width by cement, glue or other suitable binding substance. An attaching band D made of a woven fabric material is fastened to the lower edge of the united facing B and backing C by stitches E, and the said attaching band D extends u ward at the backing C and is secured by stitclpies F to the hat at the junction of 4the crown G with the rim G, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1.
The attaching band D is preferably provided at its lower end and at the rear of the sweat band proper with va core II of ratan or a like flexible material, so as to hold the sweat band lspaced from the crown G of the hat or other head covering.
In order to prevent the u per end of the facing B and backing C from becoming rough or raveling, a binding I is provided, preferably in the shape of a braid secured to the facing B near the upper end thereof, suitable stitches J being used to secure the binding I in position, the stitches J passing through both the facing B and the lining O, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
A sweat band made in the manner described is exceedingly strong and durable, and at the same time provides a soft bearing on the head of the wearer, and owing to its flexibility it readily conforms to the configuration of the wearers head.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sweat band for head coverings, comprising a backing of fabric material, and a facing consisting of a continuous sheet of cork attached to the backing, an attaching band secured to the lower edge of the united facing and backing for securing the sweat band in place in the head covering, a braid binding on the inside o'f the facing adjacent to the upper edge thereof, and secured to the facing and backing.
2. A sweat band for head coverings, comprising a fabric backing, and a facing consisting of a continuous sheet of cork attached to the backing, and an attaching band connected with the facing and the backing.
I'n testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THEODORE J. ASCII.
