Description

PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908.
L. G. GILLILAND. CARD.
APPLICATION FILED 1330.11, 1907.
12 ul'. GCZCCZQ 1645 base 1.
ingenious device for LLEWELLYN c. GILLILAND, 0F. VAN WEBT, OHIO.
CARD.
No. 890,135. I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 9, 1908.
Application filed December 11, 1907. Serial No. 406,089.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LLEWELLYN G. GILLI- LAND, citizen of the United States, residing at Van Wert, in the county of Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cards, of which the following is a s ecification.
The object 0 this invention is a simplegand advertising and amusement pur oses generally, and designed particular y or use on post-cards or the like, the invention consisting in certain constructions and arrangements of parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which: l
Figure l is a perspective of the device showing the flap in lowered position. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof with the flap erect. Fig. 3 is a rear perspective enlarged, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a modified form.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, designates the base portion of the, numeral 1 the cardboard or other suitable material and to which is secured anelastic band 2 or the like.
In the preferred construction of the invention, the base 1 is formed with two transversely spacedopenings 3 and is slitted as indicated at 4, said slits leading into the re-. spective openings and in the resent instance forming a tongue 4 designe to be raised to permit the insertion of theband 2. The elastic band is passed throughthe said slits, inserted in therespective openings 2 and extends therebetween on each face of the flap which may be of any,
5 designates a desired configuration'to represent a human display any pictorial or which in the present instance-for the purpose of illustrating one application of the invention, represents a bear. Theelastic band 2 isintended' to be secured-to the flap 5 in such a manner that the flap will tend to assume and maintain an erect position on the base. As one' arrangement by which this -may be accomplished reference is to be had particularly to F ig.. 3, wherein it will beseerr that the flap 5 is or other figure or to 1 formed near its foot portion with two latl erally extending'tabs 6, each of said tabs being slitted as indicated at 7. Theelastic band 2 is passed into the slit 7 and is held frictionally therein, and intermediate of the tabs, the band is passed over and in engagement with a preferably spear-head, tongue 8 formed by slitting the main portion of the flap as clearly illustrated in the drawing. The tabs 6 have a hinged or ointed connection with the body or main portion of the flap, by scoring or otherwise weakening the parts along a predetermined line of juncture, and the arrangement of theband 2 and its engagement with and tension upon the said tabs normally holds the tabs drawn rearwardly and on edge so as to support the body portion of the flap in erect position.
It is obvious from the construction of the device that the flap may be depressed to lie in substantially the same plane as the base 1 and thus render the device capable of being conveniently inserted in an envelop for mailing purposes or the like. But as soon as the re resslng force is removed the elastic band W1 1 manifestly cause the flap to spring up in its raised position.
It will be understood however thatthe invention is not limited to the minor details of construction for instance, as shown in Fig. 4, the body portion of the flap 5 may be formed without a tongue, in which case the, elastic band 2 extends behind the fia from one tab to the other and draws'them orwardly, and the slits 7 a of the tabs may be enlarged near their lower ends to permit the lodgment of the band as shown. In the modification, the iiap'5 is flexibly attached to the base 1 a by a cloth or similarhinge It is alsoto be understoodthat while the cloth hin e 9 is only shown in Fig. 4, it may be applied to any form of the invention when desired.
Having thus described the invention, what 1 claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a flap mounted upon the base and formed near its foot portion with laterally extending tabs, secured to the base and engaged with the tabs so as to exert tension to hold the latter in angular relation to the flap and to the base, whereby to maintain the flap in an erect position on the base.
2. A device of the' character described comprising a base, a flap-mounted upon the and an elastic band i v elastic band being secured to'the flap inter-l mediate of 'thetabs, as and for the purpose set forth. 7
3. A device of the character described comprisin a base formed with spaced openings ands itted to form a tongue arranged to lead into the 0 enings, a fiapmounted upon the base and ormed near its foot portion with laterally extending tabs and intermediate of the tabs with a tongue, and an elastic band engaged With the tabs and intermedi ate of the tabs with the tongue of the flap, said band being adapted to be passed beneath the tongue of the base into thejrespective openings, as and for the urpose set forth.
4. A device of t e character described, cojmprisin a base, a. flap mounted upon the base and ormed near its foot portion with laterally extending tabs havin ahinged con nection with the flap, and an e astic band secured to the base and engaged with the tabs so as to exert its tension to swin the latter inwardly and hold them inangu ar relation I, to the fla and to the base, whereby to main tain' the ap in erect position upon the base.
in presence of two witnesses.
