Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MCLAIN, OF CIRGLEVILLE, OHIO.
HARNESS-SADDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,610, dated December 33, 1851.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JoHi\T MCLAIN, ot Circleville, in the count-y of Pickaway and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness- Saddles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the object, nature, Sac., of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and letters marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a top view of one of the girths showing the sliding gage" hinge; and Fig. 3, an end view of one of the girths detached from the saddle, and Fig. 4, a section through the line af: ai. In each of these figures where the same parts are shown they are designated by the same letters of reference.
The nature of my invention consists, in
.the two sliding gage hinge boxes attached to the pads of the girths of the saddle, by means of which, the pads of the harness saddle may be widened, so as to fit the back of any sizedk horse; and also, in the manner of securing the sliding gage boxes to the pad top by means ot' a housing between the hinge box and pad top which prevents water from penetrating to the pads, as well as being ornamental and giving additional strength to the position of the sliding gage hinge boxes.
In the accompanying drawing is the saddle which is secured to the pads by the screw bolts (h) which screw into the -end of the hinge (c.)
The sliding gage hinge box consists of a piece of metal with jaws d d, projecting therefrom between which the hinge plays; the fulcrum of the hinge being in notches on the underside of the box. It is secured at any desired position on the pad by means of the set screws (c e) the slots in the box allowing it to be adjusted and set to the back of any size horse. The set screws (e e) screw into a plate (f) between the-housing (g) and the top of the pad, and they also extend through the top of the pad a fraction of an inch. The plate (f) is rmly attached to the pad by the housing (g) stitched through the top of the pad effectun ally preventing the rain from penetrating to and spoiling the pad.
Having thus fully described my improved harness saddle and the advantages thereof, what I claim therein as new' and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The sliding gage hinge boxes attached to the pads so as to adjust the width of the saddle, by the screws substantially as described. I also claim the manner of attaching the sliding gage hinge boxes to the pads by means of the housing between them and the top of the pad andthe set screws passing through the plate f, and top of the pads substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MCLAIN. Witnesses:
