Be it known that I, J. M. KIRKPATBIGK, of Utica, in the county of Licking, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and' useful Improvement in Springs ;v and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had'to the accompanying drawing, which represents a vertical sectionof the spring.

The nature of my invention consists in constructing springs for upholstery-purposes, composed of wire and India rubber, or other elastic material.'

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.

In the drawinga represents the wire bent in the usual form of a conical spiral spring, and

b, the India rubber, which surrounds and completely lls the space between the wire.

By making a spring in this manner, the metal is prevented from corroding. The spring is much stronger,

and retains its elasticity longer than those of the ordinary construction, and it is also noiscless in action. The rubber also: keeps the shape' of the spring more perfect, and makes thc action more regular, and Athe Wire acts in the same manner o n the rubber.

The top and bottom of the spring may be closed, by which means the spring is rendered stronger, by utilizL ing the enclosed air, and will bear a greater amount of pressure; or, if deemed preferable, it may be left open either at the top or bottom.

Having thus fully described my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of a conical spiral spring with India rubber, or its equivalent, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
