Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HOPKINS, residing at Cleveland, inthe county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented cer- 'tain new and useful Improvements in Blowpipes, ofvwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to l the .accompanying drawings.

An operating-lever 17 is arranged for this valve, and it is preferably held. in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 'Llby ns lever 17 is provided with a swiveled block 17', having an opening for receiving an arm' 1S, connected to abar 19,-of frutta-percha orr other Suitable material whic 1 is capableof serving as a thcrmostaticdevice. Anut 19 on the threaded end of thearm 18 is adapted. to engage the swiveled block 17l and shift the valvelever 17 against the tension of its spring. This bar 1 9 is secured to thejacket 8 at its rear end. From the arrangement of 'parts connected to the operating-lever 17 and thevalve 14 it will be seen that any ychange in the temperature of the Watermunicating, respective jacket and its parts will bring about a shifting of thevalve 14 and will cause such valve to admit hot or'cold water, as the case may be.
In normal position thevalve 14 is set to deliver throughtlieport 16 hot water, and upon the expansion of the bar -19 thevalve 14 will shut oli' this hot water and admit cold water through the port 15 to the jacket, in which case the'parts within the same will be kept at a low temperature. If it is desirable to raise the point at whichthe cold water comes, then the nut 1Ql is vshifted on thearm 18, so that thethermostatic bar 19 will -have a greater movement before it operates the va ve 14. Within the water-jacket 8 and secured to the forward end thereoic is a burner-tubcQO, having a flange 21, provided with threaded o enin s for receiving screws 22, passing t roug o enings in thehead 10. j Thistube 20 has a tlireaded opening 23 for receiving a burner-nozzle 24 of any preferred size and construction. This tube 1s further provided withprojections 25 forjenga ement with the inner wall ofthe water-jac (et to hold the tube in yplaceand also with anannular shoulder 26 at the rear end thereof for receiving the flange 27 of a hollowmixing-cone 28 and with a threadedcylindrical part 29 for re. ceiving a member 3Q, provided withopenings 31 for'receiving the air and gas 'pipes 4 and 5 arid withsuitableorts 32 and-33, comy, withnozzles 34 and 35. Thesenozzles 34 and 35 are preferably arranged in a manner such that they will project their streams toward each other and within the mixing-cone 28. When the device is used with acetylene, a `su'flicient quantity of such gas and air is ad- .mi'tted to the mixer. to pro;.uce the ila-lne rcquired at the-burner, and when the radiation of the heat trom such flame angl also the heat prouccfl by the heating up of the. parts due to the heat 'radiated from the work 1n actual practice that the parts do not elog or carhonize m any wa)r and that perfect combustion is brought about at all times.
W hen gases are use l which would give better combustion if the mixture. were heated iu the initial start-ing or, in fact, even after the device is under way, then thenut 19 is adjusted so that the temperature of the parts is raised by permitting the hot water to 'flow into the jacket until the thermostat has .shifted the valve or until the point in temperature lor perfectcombnstion of this particular gas being used has been reached .l
