To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES T. RIDGELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Trimmers and Rollers, of? which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to trimmers and rollers of the type ordinarily used in paper-hanging and similar occupations.

The object of the invention is to provide upon a single handle a cutter adapted to trim the edges of paper along base-boards, casings, &c., and a roller adapted to smooth and level the edges after they have been trimmed.

With this object in view my invention consists of the construction hereinafter to be described and then more fully pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined cutter and roller constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a similar tool provided with a modified term of cutter.

The drawings illustrate one embodiment of my invention, in which the handle portion 1 is provided with a T-shaped extension 2, the arms of which are provided withscrewthreaded apertures 3 and 4. Secured to one of these arms is a cutter 5, preferably in the form of a rotary disk cutter mounted on a bearing-lug 6, having one end screw-threaded, as shown at 7, to engage the screwthreaded aperture 4 in the arm of the T-shaped head 2. I have shown in the drawings both a serrated cutter and one having a smooth edge, either form being equally adapted to the operation ot-the device and being used interchangeably, according to the nature of the work to be performed.

The seaming-rol er 8 may be of any suitable construction, but is preferably formed of wood and is slightly tapered from the outer edge toward the supporting member or handle 2. This roller is preferably pivoted on a bearing lug or bolt 9, provided with a head 10 and. a screw-threaded portion 11, adapted to engage the threadedaperture 3 in the arm of the supporting-head 2 and support said the county of Clark and State l l roller on the opposite side of said support ngl head from that on which the cutter is mountl ed. The outer face of this roller is preferably recessed, as shown at 12, to receive the I head 10 of the bearinglug 9 in order that the same may not the outer face of the roller and comeinto contact with the finished surfaces of the wall.

The operation of the device herein described will be obvious. In the use of the same the paper is creased along the edge of the base-board or casing and the cutter 5 is passed over the same to sever the overhanging edges. The tool is then reversed in the hand and the roller 8 passed over the edge of the paper, pressing the same firmly in place.

The use of the device herein described onables the paper-hanger to perform with a single tool two operations for which he was heretofore obliged to use at least two tools, and by the employment of a single tool he saves not only the expense incident to the separate tools but also a great deal of time.

I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a supporting member, a stud-shaft mounted on one side thereof and extending at substantially right angles thereto, and a cutter mounted on said stud-shaft, of a second stud-shaft on the opposite side of said supporting member extending in a direction opposite to that of the first-mentioned stud-shaft, and a roller carried by said firstmentioned stud-shaft, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a substantially T- shaped supporting member, a disk cutter mounted on one arm of said supporting member, and a roller mounted on the other arm of said. supporting member on the side opposite that on which said cutter is mounted, substantially as descr'bed.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination, of a supporting member,

oppositely-extending arms carried by said extend beyond the plane of supporting member, a disk cutter mounted on one of said arms, and a roller mounted on the other arm of said supporting member and having its Working surface extending beyond the rear edge of said disk cutter, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination, of a supporting member, arms carried thereby and extending in opposite directions, screw-threaded apertures in said arms, bearing-lugs having screw-threaded'portions adapted to engage said screwt-hreaded apertures, a rotary disk cutter mounted on one of saidbearing-lugs, and a roller mounted on the other of said lugs, substantially as described. a

5. In a device of the character described, the combination, of a supporting member, a cutter mounted on one side of said supporting member, and a roller mounted on the opposite side of said supporting member and having its outer face recessed, substantially as described.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination, of a supporting member, a rotary disk mounted on one side of said supporting member, a bearing-screw mounted on the opposite side of said supporting member, and a' roller mounted on said bearing-screw and having its outer face recessed to receive the head thereof, substantially as described.
