Description

No. 838,920. PATENTEDDEO. 18, 1906.
- R. M. VARNEDOE.
COMBINATION TOOL FQR FISHERMENS USE.
APPLIOATION FILED 00116. 1906.
7 v Q W a A du UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT M. VARNEDOE, or THOMASVILLE, GEoRGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HARRY o. HOUSTON, OF THOMASVILLE, oEoRoiA.
COMBINATION-TOOL FOR FISHERIVIENS USE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT M. VARNEDOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thoinasville, in the county of Thomas and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Tools for Fishermens Use; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination-tools adapted especially for hunters use, and comprises a pair of pliers having means for holding and cutting bullets for sinkers and clenching the same upon a fishing-line.
The invention comprises various details of construction and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my combination-tool. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the jaws, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the other jaw.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one of the jaws of the tool, which has a series of semispherical recesses B formed in the inner face thereof adapted to receive bullets of diflerentdiameters. The outer face of said jaw has a flattened portion B and an integral hook B projecting from one end of said flattened surface and overhanging the latter and designed for use as a closure-opener. The handle of said jaw A has a recess C formed therein, in the walls of which recess a pivotal pin C is mounted, upon which the corkscrew D is pivoted, whichlatter, when turned back into the recess, assumes the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The
end of the handle is formed into a screwdriver C A second jaw E has a handle E, having one end slitted, as at E forming a claw,
whereby tacks or nails may be extracted, and this jaw. is formed into a cutting edge F, which is adapted, as the jaws come together, to contact with the recessed face of the jaw A along its longitudinal center and across the centers of the semispherical recessesformed therein.
Referring to Fig. 6 of the drawings, it will be noted that the cutting edge terminates at the outer end of a flattened and milled portion H, which will close the semispherical recess G (illustrated clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings) when the jaws come together, said flattened portion H being provided to clench the bullets after they have been split by the cutting edge and a line placed in the slit, thereby securely holding the bullet or sinker to the line. The jaw A is provided with a longitudinal slot A in the walls of which a pivot-pin A is mounted, and through said slot the shank portion of the jaw E passes, being pivotally mounted upon said pin held by the jaw A.
In operation when it is desired to utilize the aws of the tool for splitting bullets the bullets are inserted in one or another of the semispherical recesses B, and by bringing the handles of the tool together the cutting edge of one jaw will cause the bullets to be cut through one-half their thickness, the beveled edges of the knife spreading the bullet sufficiently to receive a line upon which the bullet isto be fastened as a sinker. The line being placed in the 'slit of the bullet, the latter may be placed in the recess G, resting against the flattened milled portion H, after which when the jaws are brought together the bullet may be clenched upon the line and securely held thereto.
By the provision of the device made in accordance with my invention it will be noted that a simple and efflcient tool is provided for convenient use of hunters and fishermen, combining in a single tool several elements for ready use of a sportsman.
What I claim is 1. A combination-tool comprising a pair of pliers, one jaw of which has a series of semispherical recesses formed in alinement with one another, the other aw having a cutting edge adapted to bite against the opposite jaw along its longitudinal center and centrally across said recesses, as set forth.
2. A combination-tool comprising a pair of pliers, one jaw of which has a series of recess opposite said flattened portion, as set semispherical recesses formed in alinement forth. 10 with one another, the other jaw having a In testimon whereof I hereunto afiix my cutting edge adapted to bite against the opsignature in the presence of two Witnesses.
