HANDLE GRIP.
APPLIUATIOE EILED :uns 2a, 1905.
2 snEE'rs-sxEET s,
PATENT 'EEICE ."HENRY'osMER CLARKE AND -J'AMEs WILLIAM WEEKS, oF MAInsToNE, ENGLAND, f
To lill-:whorrt' it may con'cen.;
(Be it known lthat we, HENRY OSMER' 4CLARK-E and JAMEs WILLIAM WEEKS, subjects of the King. of England, residing 'at y. Maidstone,in the county of Kent, England, have invented certain new and useful Handle-Grips, ofwhich thelfollowing is a specilication.
VIO
' This' invention relates handles for clubs,.
with strips oirub 'er or similar material soA attachedfto it that 'the surfaceis formed partly of rubber and partly of wood. l This invention is particularly suitable for the handles of base-ball andV cricket bats,
' quet-mallets, hockey-sticks, and the like 'golf-clubs, tennis and other rackets', crobut it may be equally well used with handles for operating mechanism orfor agricultural implements and tools or in other cases where it is necessary to retain a lfirm grip.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a handle for a golf-club nade according to one construction of thisinvention. Fig-2 is a cross-section on theline 2 2 of Fig.
1, drawn to a larger scale; and Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate,respectively, the handle of atennisracket and` a cricket-bat also this invention.v v
` Like letters indicate like parts, throughout the draWin S'.
With vre erence rst toFi 1, A is the Wooden portion of thehand e of the olfclu-b. Itris provided with three longitu inal slots or grooves A', extending throughout its lenglth, and strips B, of rubber, are inserted in t e grooves and secured in any convenient way, preferably by cementing them and binding their endsfas at The sides ofthe grooves AInay be square, or they may be undercut, as shown at one place in Fig. 2, Where one of the strips B is removed for the sakeof clear'ness. The strips B, .of`rubber, may be of any convenient form, but are Vpreferably ribbed, as at B', to provide a better gripping-surface', and it is found advanta-v f geous to make a central groove or channel B2 ontheunder surface, which forms a more or.
less elastic cushion between the center ofthe speciacation f Letters Patent. Application megIJune 23,51905. serial 110.2661568. t
to this y invention av fhandle v any tendency for t -face of portion A of the according to striand thegsubstance ofthe handle A. Suc central channel need not be provided, and one of .the strips in Fig. 2 is shown withouta.' Y-
A Patented ocaso', 1ste. v
In' the tennis-'mm handle iilustrated is in this case they are Vnotcarried rightout at the 'butt-end yof the handle, as in Fig. 1,-
lFig. 3, similar strips B are inserted, although but areplaced slots having rounded end-s,
as at A2.
In Fig. A4-the invention is shown applied to a cricket-bat, lon itudinal strips B being let into the material ormin the handle D. As
inthegolf-club handle 'Mlustrated in Fig. 1,
theends of the strip B are shown-in Fig. 4 as v secured by-binding C. It will be understood that the strips Bl may be ofany suitable material and shape,
althoughit is preferred to form them of rubber grooved on the outside surface and pro- V vided With an inner channel. I-tf is found that, such rubber strips afford'v a very sure grip ofthe handle of the racket or other article and, especially when the hand is somewhat hot and moist, set up asuction, which obviates to the handle. .The exterior surface of the strips-B can project sli htly above the sur' landle7 and in Fig. 2
e hand to slip relatively we show the ribbed portion B vof the strips l as projectingvery slightly beyondthesur- `face of portion A, and thus aording a some# what better grip for the hands.
What We claim'as our invention, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is-
1'.- In a non-slipping gri for a handle the combination'with ahandlle-body. having a series ofgrooves or recesses whose lengths extend longitudinally of the handle alter,- nating circumferentally of the handle with ribs formed by part of the handle-body, of a separate rubber strip inserted in'each recess in the handle-body for the purpose described.
2. In a non-slipping grip'for a handle thev combination with a handle-'body having aseries of grooves or recesses whose lengths extend longitudinally of thehandle alternating circumferentially of the handle with strips of the handle-body, of a separate rubber bar inserted in leach groove, for the purpose described. l
3. In a handle the combination of a handie-body having longitudinal grooves and IOC rubber strips, channeled upon that face of the strip which is presented toward the center of the handle, secured in said grooves.
4. In a non-slipping grip for a handle the` the said strips for the purpose described.
5. In a handle the combination of a handle-body having longitudinal grooves and rubber strips, channeled upon that face of the strip which is presented toward the center of the handle7 and ribbed on that face of the strip Which is presented to the exterior surface ofthe handle, secured in said grooves.
6. In a non-slipping grip for a handle the combination with a handle-body having a series of undercut grooves or recesses alternating circumferentially of the handle with lstrips Yformed of the handle-body, of separate rubber bars each inserted in a separate groove the rubber strips andthe grooves being Wider at the base than at the outer surface, Jfor the purpose described.
7. A handle having undercut grooves, rubber strips of transverse section corresponding to that ofthe grooves adapted to engage said grooves and channeled upon that face of the strip which is presented toward the center of the handle.
8. In a non-slipping o'rip for a handle the combination with a handle-body having separate longitudinal undercut ooves alternating circuinferentially of t 1e handle with strips formed by part of the handle-body of separate rubber bars inserted one in each of the separate undercut grooves, the said bars being Wider at the base than at the top to iit the grooves, of ribs on the exterior surface of the handle, forthe purpose described.
9. A handle having undercut grooves, rubber strips of transverse section corresponding to that of the grooves adapted to engage said grooves, channeled upon that face of the strip which is presented toward the center of the handle, and ribbed on that face of the strip which is presented to the exterior surface of the handle.
Intestimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY OSMER CLARKE.
