Be it known that 1, CHARLES JOHN CLEvn LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rocky Ford, in the county of Otero and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Suspending Pantaloons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has reference to means for suspending pantaloons and it consists in the eculiar and advantageous means hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

In the accompanying part of this specification, elevation illustrating my improvements as applied to a pair of pantaloons. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail longitudinal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken in the plane indicated by theline 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the attachments which I prefer to employ on the shoulderstraps. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the attachments for use on the pantaloons, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified shoulder-strap attachment, hereinafter referred to in detail.

Referring by letter to the said drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 6 thereof, A is a pair of pantaloons. These pantaloons are peculiar in that they are provided on their waistband at intervals in the length thereof with loops B, two of the said loops being preferably arranged on the back of the pantaloons, at opposite sides of the vertical median line thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, and four of the loops being arranged on the front of the pantaloons, as shown in Fig. 1. The said loops B are carried by bodies C, attached to the inner side of the waistband of the pan taloo ns and are arranged to extend through vertical slots D in the said waistband, as shown in detail in Fig. 4. This is the preferable mode of connecting the loops B to the waistband; but I desire it distinctly understood that the said loops B may be connected to the waistband in any other manner comatible with the purposes of my invention;

drawings, forming Figure 1 1s a front also that the loops B and their bodies C may be made of any suitable material, though I prefer to make them of sheet metal nickelplated or otherwise embellished.

E is a belt of leather or other suitable material extending through the loops B at the outer sideof the waistband of the pantaloons and having its ends connected by an ordinary buckle F or other suitable means. The said belt E is shown as extending through the loops B and also through loops G, such as are ordinarily provided on pantaloons intended for summer wear. These loops G, however, have nothing to do with my invention, and they may therefore be omitted when desired without affecting the use of my improvements.

H H are shoulder-straps, which have for their function to suspend the pantaloons from the shoulders. These straps H are provided with loops I, through which the belt E extends, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and hence it will be apparent that the belt is made to effect connection between the shoulderstraps and the pantaloons. It will also be apparent that the said connection is a strong and durable one and is well adapted to withstand the strains to which means for suspending pantaloons are ordinarily subjected. The loops I may be made of any material suitable to the purpose and may be connected to or formed in or on the shoulderstraps in any approved manner without affecting my invention. I prefer, however, to make the said loops I of sheet metal and to arrange them on body-plates J, one of which is shown in detail in Fig. 5. The said bodyplates J of the shoulder-strap attachments are identical in construction, and therefore a detailed description of the one shown in Fig. 5 will sufiice to imp art a definite understanding of all. The said body-plate J, Fig. 5, is

rovided above its loop I with two horizontal slots a and below the said loop I with a horizontal slot b, and it is also provided at its lower end with a tongue 0. In attaching the said body-plate J to its complementary shoulder-strap H the said strap is passed throu h the loops a and b after the manner best s own in Fig. 3, and a loop (1' at the lower end of the strap is placed over the tongue 0. In this manner it will be observed that the shoulder-strap attachments are securely connected to the shoulder-straps in such manner that there is no liability of their becoming casually disconnected, and yet when it is desired for any reason to remove one of the attachments and replace it with said loops I a new attachment the same may be readily accomplished without the employment of skilled labor or tools of any description.

In the practical use of my means for suspending pantaloons the belt E is passed through the loops B on the pantaloons and also through the loops I on the shoulderstraps H, and the ends of the said belt are buckled or otherwise connected together. I/Vith this done it will be apparent that the shoulder-straps are connected to the pantaloons in a strong and durable manner, and it will also be apparent that the shoulderstraps are permitted to move or play on the belt E to a limited extent, which is desirable because it conduces to the comfort of the person wearing the improvements. It will also be apparent that while the shoulderstraps may be quickly and easily connected to the pantaloons and as readily disconnected from the pantaloons when desired there is absolutely no liability of the shoulder-straps becoming casually disconnected while the suspending means is in use.

In Fig. 7 of the drawings I have illustrated a modified loop I, one of which is to be used on the straps H in lieu of the loops I. The are respectively formed integral with or fixedly connected to a body-plate J, which is designed to be stitched or otherwise permanently attached to a strap H.

In addition to the advantages which I have hereinbefore ascribed to my novel means for suspending pantaloons it will be observed that the said means is simple and inexpensive in construction, permits of the employment of an ordinary belt, such as is conimonly worn by men in the summer-time, and embodies no delicate parts such as are liable to break under the strains to which suspenders are ordinarily subjected.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a means for suspending pantaloons, shoulder-straps provided with loops, in combination with pantaloons having vertical extending through the said slots in the waistband and carried by bodies attached to the inner side of the said waistband, and a belt passed through the loops of the shoulderstraps and pantaloons and having its ends detachably connected together.

2. In a means for suspending pantaloons, shoulder-straps terminating in loops, attachments comprising bodies having slots receiving the shoulder-straps and also having depending tongues engaging the loops thereof, and loops carried by the said bodies, in combination with pantaloons, and a belt attached to the pantaloons and passed through the loops of the attachments on the shoulderstraps and having its ends detachably connected together.
