UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WEEDlNG-TOOL- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed January 12,1906. Serial No. 295,738.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE D. HALPIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lapeer, county of Lapeer, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Weeding-Tools; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to weeding-tools; and the object of my improvements is to provide an improved weeding-tool which may be used to deposit a fluid upon the lace where a weed is out to destroy the life of the weed.
In the annexed drawing the figure represents a weeding-tool embodying my invention.
A B represent the handle, and C is the blade, of which 0 is the cutting edge.
D is the reservoir, secured to the handle A, adapted to contain the fluid, which is usually petroleum or some of its products.
E is a pipe leading from the reservoir D downward through or past the handle to a nozzle 6 at the back of the handle.
f is the mouth of the nozzle e.
J is a lever'pivoted at H and extendingforward from the pivot under the mouth f of the nozzle 6, at which point it is provided with a valve I and also extending back of said pivot.
Gr is a spring secured at 9 back of the handle A, extending backward and downward and then forward and secured to the rear end of the lever J. The springG acts to press the rear end of the lever J downward and the inner end thereof upward, pressing the valve I against the mouth f of the nozzle 0, thus preventing the flow of fluid from said nozzle.
In use the blade 0 is pressed against and cuts the weed, and the handle A is bent backward until the lever J strikes against the surface of the ground, oscillating said lever about its pivot H and withdrawing the valve I from the mouth f of the nozzle e, thus allowing the fluid to flow upon the cut portion of the weed. When the blade is withdrawn,
the spring G restores the valveI to its former position, preventing the further flow of fluid.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a weeding-tool, a reservoir thereon for containing fluid, a passage leading from said reservoir adapted to deliver fluid from said reservoir to the portion of the weed out by said tool, and means for opening and closing said passage adapted to be operated by contact with the earth when the handle of the tool is moved sidewise, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a weeding-tool, a reservoir thereon, a passage leading from said reservoir having its discharge-opening at the rear of said tool, a lever pivoted to said tool back of said opening and extending forward under said opening and back of said pivotal point, a valve adapted to close said opening upon said lever, and a spring adapted to force said lever against said opening.
3. The combination of a weeding-tool, a reservoir thereon, a passage leading from said reservoir and having its mouth so located that it shall discharge upon the cut portion of a weed, a valve closing said passage, a lever pivoted to said tool and extendmg in position to be oscillated by contact with the earth in the ordinary use of said tool, and a valve adapted to open and close said passage operatively connected with said lever.
4. The combination of a weeding-tool, a reservoir thereon, a passage leading from said reservoir having its mouth so located that it shall discharge upon the cut portion of a weed, a valve closing said passage, a lever pivoted to said tool and extending backward therefrom in position to be oscillated by contact with the earth in the ordinary use of the tool when said tool is tilted backward, and a valve adapted to open and close said passage operatively connected with said lever.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE D. HALPIN.
