IMPROVEMENT N STEAM-HEATERS.

TO ALL WHOM 'i MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that we, P. F. KESSLER and JOHN CARLISLE, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Radiators; and do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, refercueorbeinghad to the accompanying drawings, and the lett-ers of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings making a'partmf this specification- Figure -1 represents a longitudinal section..
Figure 2 represents a side elevation, with the outer jacket taken oit', and broken lines ut the bottom show ing the interior pipes.
A represents a dat, oblong-shaped metallic shell,'within which is a series of' short pipes or tubes, b b b,
placed at suitable distances from each other, and separated by a series of partition-plates, a a a. Theso pipes and partitions form parallel steam-channels, as seen in 5g. 1. i i
Theshell A may be made of any desired dimensions, provided with one or more series ot' parallel circular openings or holes through both sides, corresponding with the pipes b, and to the edges of which the circular pipes Z1 are secured, thus forming a series of holes through the shell A.
Atv one end of the shell A, through both of its sides, is a hole of suitable size, ordinarily two inches in diameter. Screw-threads are cutin the metal of the sides of the shell, forming female screws, and into which may he screweda metallic nipple, B, with screw-threads Von both ends. Said nipple B is ordinarily made ot' wrought iron, and hollow. By means of the nipple B, tworor more of the shells A may be joined together, as may be required, with tubular .passages from one to the other through the nipple B.
We insert a steam-pipe, O, through the hol'e in the out-side of the shell A, and through the tube formed Vby the nipple B, and secure it and close the outside hole in the shell bymeans of a bushing, or a collar provided with screw-threads ou said pipe.
The end of the pipe vC which is inserted is closed, but is provided with holes at its side, correspondingwith and leading directly into one of the steam-channels of each shell, by which means the steam is compelled to pass iirst up one of the steam-channels of each shell, and forces the air in front of it out of and into the other channels. Thus the shells A are simultaneously and equally heated in all their parts.
t will he seen that the steam is passed up the channels, as indicated by the arrows, and passes out(t'orcing the air ahead ofit) the outlet CZ or outlet as may be most convenient.
D represents a metallic plate adjusted between.' each of two parallel shells A, so cut and punched as to make numerous tongues or projections at right `arigles to either side ot' said plate. A similar metallic oase, E,
with projections inwardly only, embraces4 and enoloses each series of shells A and plates D', and is secured in any manner desired to the inner side ot` @.ilue or oren, into which the radiator, as a whole, is adjusted vertically. The plates D and case E, with their tongues or projections, are placed suiliciently near the shells A to break the upward currents of air, and thereby cause more particles to impinge the heated shells, by which means heat is more readily and completely disseminated.
Having thus fully described our invention, what-we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The metallic platos D and the case E, in combination with the shells A in radiators, as and for the' purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of the shellsA A, pipes 6 b, partitions a ct, nipples B B, steam-pipe C, and case E, when the several parts are constructed and operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this 10th day of December, 1867.
