Letters PatentNo. 717,593, dated May 5, 1868.
IlilllEIiOVEMENI- yIN REGISTERS FOR- RzAII'BOADiFARES.
dts Simile referat lr ia there @that rttnt mit mating arri rf tigt sami.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL' F. CovINeroN, of Cincinnati, in tbe county of Hamilton, vand State ofOhip, have invented a new and useful Improvenientin Devicesfor Registering Railroad-Fares; and I do hereby.v
deelarethat the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had-to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Y l Figure I is a perspective view of the arm of a car-seativith the register attached. Figure 2 is a side elevation of the register. I Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section. Figure 4 is a key; and Figure 5 is a perspective view oi' one oi' ythe boxes. The same letters employed in all the figures indicate the samevparts.
A.' is the arm of the car-seat. In the top of the arm is a recess `or two recesses, where there is no arm in, `the middle ofthe sont. l' I have shown the ordinary construction, with a single arm at the aislesend of the seat.
The location oi' the recess may be varied according to circumstances. Bis a metallic box, with a glass top-plate set a little above the sides of the box, leaving a narrow opening, through which the check-plates may be introduced. There are pins, B B', projecting from the ends of, the box 'to holdftlre boxes in the recess, where they' are secured by a hinged lock-plate, C, (the keyof which is carried by the conductor,) the plate shutting down on the pins on one e'nd of the boxes. Within the bex is a. false'bottom, pressed upwards by the spring E. 'F is the glass top-plate, and Gr a pin, which, projectingfrom the false bdttom, is pressed against -the bottom of the glass plate by-the spring. The point of the pin-may be bevelledfon the side towards the opening under thev glass plate. l The boit being separated,by a longitudinal partition, intol two similar compartments, the parts D,
E, and G are lintroduced into each compartment. The checks', H, are thin metallic plates, having the names of the stations on the road engraved thereon. A sutlcieit number yof these must be furnished the conductor. The top of the false bottom-has engraved on it the word vacant. The bottom of the'bx ishingcd thereto, and is secured by a lock, I, ofivhich the key, K, is kept at the oiiice at the end of the route. Y i
When tho car isstarting on its trip, all the boxeswill show the word f vacant. When a passenger pays his fare or delivers a ticket. to the conductorgthc latter will insert the checks, H, through the opening nder the glass plate. The checks, having a hole through them, will bocaught bythe4 pin Gr, so that it cannot be withdrawn. Two checks must be used in each ease-one to indieatethe placefrom which, the other the place to which the passenger has paid his fare. The checks willvthus always indicate what seats are vacant, either in 'not having been occupied at all, or showing the names of stations that have been passed. The passenger will be protected by notice that a seat, thou'gh temporarily vacant, Abelongs to 'some one, and he 4may claim it on his return to it.
' When the car reaches the' end of tho route, some one connected'with the office unlocks the boxes and .makesup an account of fares', with which that returned by the conductor must correspond. Theeondnctor I 4as set forth.
may change the boxes when a passenger desires to change his seat. This is done by unlocking the upper lock-plate. i
l What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. In combination with the'seat of a railroad-car, n lbox, so constructed that it may receive check-plates, showing the names of thestati'on'to and from which the passenger has paid his fare, and sov arranged that the plates can only be withdrawn by unlocking the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the` box B, false bottom D, glass plate F, p ins G, and-check-plates H, substantially 3. In coinbination'with tl1e.arni`A and box B, the lock-plate C, arrangedV to operate substantially as arid for the purpose set forth. l l
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this speciication inthe presence oftv' subscribing witnesses.
