BOOK-MAR K-n SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,556, dated May 31, 1904:.

have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Marks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relatesto new and useful improvements in book-marks; and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which can be readily attached to the back of a book and which is provided with a desired number of tabs which are loosely connected thereto and are adapted to be inserted between any desired leaves of the book to which the device is connected.

The invention consists of a spring clip adapted to be inserted between the back edges of the leaves and the back of the cover, said clip firmly engaging said back and having tabs connected thereto by meansof cords or other flexible strips.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a book having my improved book-mark connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the book-mark, and Fig. 3 is a view of the blank from which the clip of the device is adapted to be formed.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a head formed of a strip of spring metal bent upon itself and having an arm 2 integral therewith and extending from one end of the head. Ashorter arm 3 is integral with the other end of the head and normally bears upon the arm 2.Apertures 4 are formed in the headadjacent arm 3, and secured within each aperture is a cord 5, the outer end of which is secured to a tab 6, formed of paper or other suitable material.

To use the device herein described, thearms 2 and 3 are spread apart to permit the back 7 of a book to be inserted therebetween and into thehead 1; The tab 6 can then be readily inserted between any desired leaves of the book.

It will be understood that the head and arms may be suitably ornamented to-form an attractive device, and any desired number of tabs 6 may be connected thereto.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; butI do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

, Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as-new is A book-mark comprising a head formed of a bent strip of spring metal and having a series of apertures therein, an arm integral therewith and extending from one end of the head, a second arm integral with the other end of the head and normally contacting with the first-mentioned arm, whereby a clamp for the back of the book is produced, a series of cords secured within the apertures, and similar tabs connected to the ends of the cords.
