To ALL WHoM IT MAY eoNoEnNi it known that I, N. F. IEETE,of Middletown, in the' countyof Middlesex, and State of Connecticut,`
have invented a new Iniprovement in Lamp-Shade; and I do hereby'de'clare the following, when' taken in connection with the accompanying'drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a. full, clear,'and
lexact description ofthe saine, and which said drawings vconstitute partei' this specification,Vandrepresont, in-v Figure 1`, 'a side view. Figure 2, a. front view; Figure 3,41. top view; and in Figure'fla-rng adapted for the shade oi'- kerosene and similar lamps.
I 1 This invention is designed as an adjustable shade for burners of lamps, gas, orother lights, and consists 'in ,the peculiar construction, whereby the shade. may be set at any desired angle, orv at any point around the burner. 4
To enable others to construct hay improvement, I will proceed to describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I represent the' shade as. attached'to a coniinon gas-burner. A band or ring,l A, upon which is formed a socket, al, is placed around the burner, and into the socket a an ann, B, is inserted, and so as to turn freely therein from righttolet, asv denoted in iig. 3, and from the saidl arin B project two arms C C, formed from wire or other sembelastic material. D is the shade, fornied from any suitable material, 4and is of plate, near` the two edges offwhich'are fixed sockets d, so as to'receive the end of theV arms O, thenatural position of the arms C being to approach each othernerer than the distance of the two sockets d from cach other, so that one arm, C, is inserted into one socket; the other arm sprung out, as denoted in red, will, when released, spring into and enter -tho other socket tl, asdenotedin figj 2. The action of the spring,-`bearing in the two sockets' d d, permits the free'inovement of the shadeto diiierent inclinations, as denoted iniig. 1, andyet so as to hold the shade at any desiredinelination. 'v n g i i The shade th'us arranged and attached to the bununer may be turned to the right or left, as denoted in fig.,
`iig..4, so that more than one shadefmaybe attached.
3, or adjusted to diiiferent inclinations, as denot'edin tig. 1,.thusvr forming aneat and convenient shade, cheap anddunable'in its construction. I The ring which is attached to thc burner shonld'rbe of a size proportionateto the burner,` and may be made adjustable to different burners by forming the ring of elastic material, an'd dividing it, so as to permit ofits expansion, and, if desired, several sockets maybe placed upon the'ring, as seen in I do not wish to be understood as broadly elaiining'the attachment of a shadee to a burner,4 when .the said shade does not entirely surround'the burner, es such 'are coinmdn and well known; but
What I do claim as new, anddesire-to secure by L'ettcrs'Patent, is?- i The combination and arrangement of the ringAwith one or more sockets a, so as to receive the arm B, the said arm having'attached thereto thearms C 0,'pivotingthe shade D, so that the said shade may be turned to a diiierent inclination onithepivots d, to different positions to the right or left in the sockets a, as and for'the purpose-.herein set forth.
