UNITED STATES Patented December 22, 1903 EUGENE J. MCMEESER, OF BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA.
NAPKlN-HOLD ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 80,747,467, dated December 22, 1903.
Application filed April 1, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE J. MOMEESER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Bis marck, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Napkin-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in napkin-holders; and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be readily attached to a garment and which is provided with a simple device for engaging a napkin to hold it in proper position.
The invention consists in providing a button or plate of suitable form, to the rear surface of which is secured a strip having inwardly-extending hooks at its ends and on one side of said strip. One of these hooks is adapted to engage a garment, while the other serves to engage one edge of a napkin and hold the same in proper position. A spring is arranged upon the strip, so as to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the napkin from the hook. A preferably conical bouquetholder is soldered or otherwise secured to the rear face of the plate or button.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure l is a view showing the manner of using the device. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of two of my improved holders attached to a napkin, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the device.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l is a plate of any suitable form which may be used as a badge, button, 850., and to the rear surface of the same is soldered or otherwise secured a flat strip 2 of metal provided with tapering or reduced opposite ends which are bent, as shown, to form hooks '3 and 4, said hooks being formed on the same sidefof the strip, the'hook 4 being of a larger size than the hook 3. Aspringstrip 5 is riveted or otherwise fastened to strip vSerial No. 150,606. (No model.)
2 and the free end of which is upwardly curved and is adapted to extend into and bear upon the end ofhook 4. A preferably conical bouquet-holder 6 is fastened in any desired manner to the rear face of plate 1 at a point adjacent to hook 3, and this holder is of such size as to permit the stems of a bouquet to be readily inserted thereinto.
To use the device herein described, the hook 3 is placed in engagement with a garment, andhook 4 is then inserted through a napkin 7, near one edge thereof, andspring 5 serves to prevent the accidental withdrawal of said napkin from the hook. As shown in Fig. 1, two of the holders may be used, if desired. This improved holder may be constructed of any suitable material and can, if desired, be artistically formed of precious metal and provided with the insigna of an organization. It will of course be understood that the bouquet-holder may be dispensed with, if desired, as the same is merely secured to the plate for ornamental purposes.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; butI do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reservethe right to make such changes as fairlyt'all within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A napkin-holder comprising a plate, having a fiat strip of metal secured thereto and provided with tapering or reduced opposite ends which are bent to form hooks with pointed ends, said hooks being formed at the same side of the strip, a flat spring having its body portion secured to the strip and provided with an upturned curved end which is adapted to engage and coact with one of said hooks, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE J. MOMEESER.
