UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER DORN, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
OVERSI-IOE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,343, dated May 7, 1850.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER DoRN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Overshoes, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other things before known and of the usual manner of making, modifying, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a view of the shoe; Fig. 2 the shoe attached to a boot and Fig. 3 the irons.
My improvement consists in the manner of afxing an over shoe to a boot or shoe, and is constructed in the following manner. The sole extends from the front part of the heel of the boot or shoe over which it is to be worn, out to the toe; and the upper leather may cover more or less ofthe toe of the boot, according to the fancy of the purchaser. There is no heel or hind quarter,
but on the rear end of the sole there is a forked spring (a) projecting backward, on
the ends of which are catches, as clearly i shown in the Fig. l; at the junction of the heel of the shoe or boot with its heel, there is a mortise (b) into which is fitted an iron (c) see Fig. 3, that serves as a staple for holding the spring fastening; thus when the shoe is drawn on, the spring catch (a) enters the opening (b) inethe heel, and catches on the staple (c), and is thus securely held in place, is easily removed, and serves to protect all that part of a boot in muddy walking, that is necessary, while at the same time it is less clumsy than the ordinary over s oe.
Having thus fully described my improved over shoe, what I claim therein as new, and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent, 1s-
An over shoe covering the front of the boot at the sole, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
PETER DORN.
