UNITED STATES IPATENT OFFICE.
`ELI G. D. WADE, OFV MALTA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OE TWO-THIRDSTO GEORGE S. CORNER AND JOHN F. DAVIS, OE MALTA, OHIO.
WAISTCOAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,684, dated July 1, 1902.
v Application filed February 26, 1902. Serial No. 95,723. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known thatI, ELI G. D. WADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malta, in the county of Morgan, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Working Waistcoats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a workmanls or Io mechanics waistcoat, and particularly to the.
form and disposition of the pockets and of the openings thereto.
The invention has for its object to provide such a garment with separated vertical oppor 5 sitely-located pocket-openings from which the pockets extend downwardly and laterally relatively in opposite directions, whereby said pockets are accessible only by one hand of the wearer and whereby articles are retained securely within the pockets and the entrance of dirt, shavings, hay-seed, chaff, or other foreign matter is prevented. j
A further object of the invention is to provide such waistcoat at its lower portion with pockets at the sides adapted to directly receive the adjacent hand of the wearer, while at the upper breast portion there areprovided pockets extending in opposite directions from the central opening and having the entrances thereto in substantially vertical planes and at one side of each of the pockets, whereby opposite hands must be employed in getting access to a pocket and any article therein will be retained against loss should thewearer 3 5 of the garment stoop into such a position as would ordinarily cause articles contained in the usual form of pocket to fall therefrom.
A further object is to provide a band at the rear and having loops to receive tools or implements, said bandalso serving to facilitate hand entrance in pockets adjacent thereto.
Other and further objectsof the invention will be hereinafter. set` forth and the novel4 features thereof particularly` defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective showing the garment; Fig. 2a plan of the same in an extended positionwith parts broken away; Fig. 3, a detail elevation of one side of the garment with the liningremoved to show the position of the pockets,
and Fig. i an elevation of a modified form` having sleeves therein.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several figures of't-he draw- 55 ings.
The letter A designates a workmans or mechanics waistcoat which may be of any desired material orl configuration and is provided at the opposite sides with armholes A 6o and a central closure A2 at the front adapted to be secured together by buttons A3 or other suitable fastening devices common in the art.
At the opposite sidesof the garment, at the lower portion thereof and adjacent to the seams joining said sides to the back, are handpockets B, having vertical openings B at the rear edges thereof, said pockets extending from said openings toward the central closure A2 of the garment. These pockets may be 7o formed in any desired manner-that is, either separate from the garment or by stitching through two layers thereof, so as to leave the pocket between these layers. The pockets B may, if desired, be also provided with a small change pocket B2 separate therefrom and within the main hand-pocket B. These pockets are adapted, respectively, to receive directly the right and left hands of the wearer for the purpose of protecting the same in cold 8o weather and may be used to receive any tool or article. Y Above the pockets B and preferably at the front of the breast portion of the garment the pockets C are located and provided with vertically-disposed openings C at the front side thereof, said pockets each extending rearwardly from the closure A2 at the front of the garment in an opposite direction to the peck ets B, so that thej'pocket upon the left'of the 9o garment may be entered by the ri-ght hand and that upon the right by the left hand, (or by the fingers of either hand, respectively,) asY indicated by the arrows upon Fig. kl. It will be noticed that these pockets extend below and entirely at one side of the opening C', so that any article placed therein cannot fallout when the user bends over or assumes any other ordinary position while at work.
ln Fig. 4 a modified application of the inroo vvention is shown which is the same as hereinbefore described, except that the body portion D is provided with sleeves D at opposite armholes A'. The hand-pockets E at the lower portion correspond to the pockets B in Fig. l, and the breast-pockets F at the upper portion are the same as the pockets C. (Shown in Fig. l.)
At the back of the garment a strap Gr is secured, which by being stitched at different points, as shown at G, presents a series of loops G2, in which a Workman may carry his tools-such, for instance, as a painters brush ora slaters hammer. This strap Galso serves a useful function in connection with the pockets B, in that being stitched at the ends into or adjacent to the side seams and adjacent to the lower ends of the openings B of the side pockets B the said strap acts to keep the hack of the garment and the inner ply of the pocket taut and smooth, thus facilitating the introduction of a hand therein, reinforcing the jointure of the plies at the lower end of the opening, which is subject in use to heavy strain from the pressure and weight of the hands of the wearer, and helps to support against sagging the weight of kany articles in the pocket.
It will be noticed that by locatingr the pockets in the upper and lower portions of a side of the waistcoat and by disposing said pockets in opposite directions none of the pockets overlap each other, all available space is utilized, and the pockets themselves constitute additional plies to the garment as a whole, thus contributing to strength and warmth with a minimum of material. Furthermore, separating the upper breastpockets and disposing the same in opposite directions necessitates the use of an opposite hand to gain access to either of said pockets, whereby distortion of the openings thereof by habitual support of either hand therein is prevented and a safer closure against escape of articles is assured, notwithstanding long usage of the garment.
The uses of the garment will be clearly understood from the foregoing description,
and it may be stated in addition that the garment is so simple in construction thatlit may be very cheaply formed of material adapted to fully protect the Workman against cold and from the surroundings in which he is employed. When used in cold weather, the hands of the wearer may be readily protected in the pockets B, While pencils, rules, and other small articles will be safely held within the breast-pockets C.
It will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l A garment provided at its front portion with pockets two upon each side, with one above another and extending toward each other and occupying the area of said sides and having entrance-openings thereto respectively at the central and side-seam portions of the garment said entrance-openings being arranged at relatively opposite sides of the pockets in each side or half of the front portion of said garment; substantially as specified.
2. A garment provided with a vertical closure at its front, hand-pockets 'at the opposite sides of said closure and extending from an opening at the sides of said garment to occupy the lower portion of the front of the garment, and breast-pockets in the upper portion of the garment having openings nearest said closure and extending from said openings toward the sides of the garment to occupy the space above said hand-pockets; substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
