Description

@uitrit tatrs atru-t @fitta SAMUEL MARDEN, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CHRLES PORTER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS..
Letters Patent No. 69,826, daf-ed October 15, 1867i @te Stimuli ritmi mit tigen ttm met mit mating pitt nf tts sans.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MARDEN, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improved Implement for Straining Bands or Hoops about Boxes, Bales, 86e.; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and' exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom'- panying drawings, in .which- Figure 1 is a topview,
Figure 2 a front end elevation,
Figure 3 a longitudinal and-vertical section, and
Figure 4 a transverse section of the above-mentioned implement.
Figure 5 shows its application to a box.
The object of this invention is to enable the metallic straps or hoops now generally-employed for strengthening boxes, bales, Svc., to bedrawnor strained very tightly about such box and easily held in such strained position until the Vnails are-driven through it which conne it in place.
The invention consists in two clamp-bars or levers, so connected together at or near one end by an encompassing strap or yoke, and'turning-pin or fulcrum, as to be readily spread apart to receive the straps between them, and subsequently closed upon such straps with pressure sufficiently powerful -to securely hold it between them while it is being strained about the box, the lower lever projecting somewhat beyond the upper, and formed Ywith. a curved or rockepbeari'ng to bear against the edge of the box, and form a powerful leverage to strain the said strap. l
In therdrawings accompanying this specification, and which illustrate my invention, A denotes a lever having its forward end-rounded or formed into a rocker-bearing, a, the shape of this bearing being about o. quadrant of a circle. vA short distance in the rear of this bearing the lever` is encompassed by a yoke, b, the arms c c of'which extend upward upon each side of it, and receive between them a clamp-bar, B, which is pirated to such arms c c by-a,horizontal rod or fulcrum, d. The lower forward part of the bar B is rounded or curved into such a form that Vit shall recede from the upper surface o'f the lever A, and leave a space between them, when the handle e of such bar B is raised, and thus allow of the introduction of the metallic hoop or strap between them. The curved surfaces of the lever A and bar B, as well as the parts immediately in contact with each other, should he covered with a protecting plate of metal, if made of wood, to preservethem from abrasion and injury.
In operating with the above-described implement, -tne clamp B is to be turned upon its fulcrum and raised from contact with the lever A, and the hoop or strap to bc inserted between the two, as shown in iig. 3 of the drawings. The end of such strap immediately contiguous to the curved ends of the implement is next to be nailed to any proper part of the box, as shown in iig. 5, for instance, and theimplcment to be slipped along the strap until it passes over the edge of the box, and with the rocker-bearing a of lever A in contact with its'edge, as shown in the said figure. By clasping the handles of Lthe implement, and bringing them towards each other, with a tight grasp, the metallic hoop will be securely held between them. By lowering the two handles and turning the implement with the bearing a as a fulcrum or bearing, a very powerfulleverage is exerted upon the strap or hoop, and consequently enables it to be strained :ibout the box to any desired extent. As soon as one side of the box has received the strap, the implement is tobo slipped along it, until the next corner is reached, and so on in succession until the round of the box is completed.
The utility'and practical value of the above-described implement will readily manifest themselves to persons accustomed to hoop'ing boxes or bales.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- An implement for hooping boxes, in which the lever A and bar B are' combinedv with the yoke c, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein shown anddescribed. A
' -sAML MARDEN.
