EDGAR I-I. FINFROOK, OF JACKSON, MINNESOTA.
TOE-CAP FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 659,519, dated October 9, 1900.
Application filed June 28, 1900. Serial No. 21,952. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR H. FINFROCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-Caps for Boots or Shoes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in toe-caps for boots and shoes, the object in view being to produce a protecting-cap which is simple, cheap, and durable and which is adapted to effectually prevent scarring, cutting, or wear of the toe of the boot or shoe and to be easily applied and worn Without inconvenience.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a boot or shoe cap constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective View of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the cap. Fig. i is a detail perspective view of the base or reinforcing plate.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a metallic base or reinforcing plate 1, which is arc-shaped or approximately of crescent form to correspond to the curvature of the toe portion of a boot or shoe and is provided in its horizontal body portion 2 withopenings 3 for the passage of nails, screws, or other suitable fastenings for securing the cap to the sole of the shoe. This plate is provided around its outer edge with avertical flange 4, to which is connected by vulcanizin g or otherwise a crescent-shaped rubber cap or protecting portion 6, having an upwardly and rearward ly turned or inclin ed rim 7, adapted to extend over upon and shield the upper or top surface of the toe of the boot or shoe and protect the same from injury or Wear. The rubber cap is preferably roughened or serrated upon its outer face to increase its durability and capacity for wear,
and to provide for the further connection of the cap to the flange of the plate I provide the latter with a series of cross-shaped slots 8, the upper ends of the vertical port-ions of which open through the upper edge of the flange, as shown. Through these slots the rubber flows in the vulcanizing process and forms a film or layer upon the inner face of the flange, which is connected to the body of the cap by binding or connecting portions 9, which hold the cap firmly secured to the plate and prevent its displacement under Wear or strain. The ends of theflange 4 are bent outwardly and forwardly to form hooks orclips 10, which embrace the rear ends or edges of the rubber cap and shield or protect the same from wear and prevent splitting thereof.
In use the body portion of the plate is secured to the toe portion of the sole of the shoe, and the cap extends upwardly above and incloses the toe and protects the same from rubbing and being cut, scarred, or otherwise injured. The device is light in weight and simple in construction and may therefore be worn without inconvenience or annoyance to the user.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A toe-cap for boots and shoes comprising I a metallic plate provided with a vertical flange, and a toe-cap vulcanized to said flange and having a rim portion to embrace the toe of the shoe, substantially as described.
2. A toe-cap for boots and shoes comprising a metallic plate provided with a vertical flange having its ends bent to form protecting-clips, and a cap portion of rubbersecured to said flange and having its rear ends or edges embraced by said clips, substantially as described.
3. A toe-cap for boots and shoes comprising a metallic base or reinforcing plate adapted to be secured to the sole of a shoe and provided with a vertical flange having a series of openings and clips at its ends, and a cap portion of rubber vulcanized to said flange and having portions extending through said Openings and its ends embraced by the said clips, substantially as described.
4. A toe-cap for boots and shoes, comprising a base provided with a vertical flange having apertures, and a toe-cap vulcanized to said flange and having inner andouter layers 10 bound by integral portions extending through said apertures and a rim portion to embrace the toe of the shoe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
E. H. FINFROOK.
