ITEJD STATES PATEN MATTHEWV HOGAN, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOGAN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OFv SAME PLACE.
WATER-CLOSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 651,354, dated d'une 12, mod
Application filed August 6, 1897. Serial No. 647,392. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW HOGAN ,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Closets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, whereby any one'skilled in the art can make and usethe same.
My invention relates more particularly to the construction of the cover, seat, and connected parts and means for connecting the same to a structure of fragile material; and the object of my invention is to provide a hinge or like connecting means that may be used for attaching the seat and cover, either orboth, to such a structure composed of crock cry or like ware without danger of throwing any breaking strains upon such part.
To this end my invention consists in the combination of the several parts and in the details of such parts, as hereinafter described, and more particularly recited in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is adetail top or plan view of the bowl of the closet, showing myimprovement. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of a portion of the bowl, showing the connection of the cover and seat. Fig. 3 is a detail view, in longitudinal section, through the anchor-pin looking from the rear. Fig. 4 is a detail view, on enlarged scale, in longitudinal section, through the anchor-pin of a modified form of the invention looking from the rear. Fig. 5 is a detail side view of a portion of the seat and cover, showing a modified form of construction of the hinge.
In the accompanying drawings the letter a denotes a bowl constructed in the usual manner of porcelain or like fragile material, I) the seat, and c the cover.
In some of the devices of the prior art in this class of structures the hinge for the seat and cover has been rigidlysecured to the porcelainware, with the attending objection that if an obstruction be placed between the seat and bowl or cover and seat and a weight placed upon the upper surface of the seat or cover the crockery is broken out at the fastening-points of the hinge. In order to overcome such obj ections, I have provided an improved device as follows and also one having the added advantage that the seat and cover may be convenientl'y removed. 7
The letter (1 denotes a lip or shelf forming a shoulder on the bowl and in which is inserted a socket 6, having a head 6 resting upon the upper surface of the bowl and a nut e fitting the threaded lower end of the socket to clamp it in place. A seat anchor-pin f fits loosely within this socket and is provided with ears f and alongitudinal opening f Acover anchor-pin g, having a shank g extending through the opening f affords a means of pivotal attachment of the strap 0 from the cover 0, and a strap b is pivotally attached to the seat anchor-pin f by means of ahingepin extending through the ears f and the strap b It is to be understood that the parts above described are preferably duplicated in each structure, a complete set of devices being located adjacent to each side of the seat and cover.
In the modified form of the device shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings a socket h and anchor-pin 1' are used similar to those above described, with the exception that the straps of the seat and cover are both pivoted on a single hinge-pin 2", secured in the head of the anchor-pin c. This form of construction will be found to overcome the difficulty sought to be avoided to a very great extent, the cover having no rising movement independent of the seat; but it has been found that an obstruction in by far the greater number of cases is liable to be interposed between the seat and the bowl.
In the modified form of the device shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings the leaf 0 of the cover 0 is pivoted to a lug on the upper surface of the leaf 1) of the seat I), the leaf I) being pivoted in an anchor-pin is, secured in a socket Z, as hereinbefore described.
It is obvious that the construction herein shown may be departed from to a certain ex- 5 tent and yet come within the scope of the invention, and I do not desire to limit myself to the precise form of device herein shown and described.
The term removably has been used in the claims herein to denote that feature of the device which allows for the free removalof the cover 0i seat from the bowl, and the claims having this term are to be understood as limited to such a feature of construction.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In combination with a bowl of fragile material, a socket secured within the material forming the bowl, an anchor-pin removably located in the socketin the bowl, a swinging part, and a flexible connection between the anchor and the swinging part.
2. In combination with a bowl of fragile material, a swinging seat, a seat anchor-pin removably located in the substance of the bowl, a flexible connection between the seat and seat anchor-pin, a cover, a cover anchorpin removably located in the bowl, and a flexible connection between the cover and cover anchor-pin.
3. In combination with a bowl of fragile material, a socket located in the substance of the bowl, a seat anchor-pin removably located in the socket, a seat, a flexible connection between the seat and seat anchor-pin, a
cover anchor-pin reniovably located in said socket, a cover, and a flexible connection between the cover and cover anchor-pin.
4. In combination with a bowl of fragile material, a socket secured therein, aseat anchor-pin removably located in the socket, a seat, a flexible connection between the seat and seat anchor-pin, a cover anchor-pin, located in the seat anchor-pin, a cover and a flexible connection between the cover and cover anchor-pin.
5. In combination with a bowl of fragile material, a socket secured therein, aseat anchor-pin removably located in the socket, a seat pivotally connected with the anchor-pin, a cover anchor-pin removably located in the seat anchor-pin, and a cover pivot-ally connected with the cover anchor-pin.
