CARRIE E. BROXVER AND DANIEL V. BROWER, OF PATERSON, NEW' JERSEY.
RECLINING- HIGH-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,359, dated August 2, 1898.
Application filed $eptemher 22, 1897. Serial No. 652,567- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- Be it kn own that we, CARRIE E.BRowER and DANIEL W. BROWER, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reclining High-Chairs; and'we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I i
This invention relates to novel and-useful improvements in reclining high-chairs; and it has for its object to provide a chair of the character mentioned that can with very little labor be adjusted and readily converted from a high-chair to a chair in which the child or baby can comfortably rest or sleep.
A further object of the invention isto provide a chair of this character-that'will be especially simple in construction, cheap, and durable.
WVe are enabled to accomplish the objects of our invention by the simple means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, the same being shown adjusted to position for reclining therein in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the chair proper, which in the present instance comprises a bottom 2 and side sections 3.
The numeral 4 indicates the back of a chair, which is provided with side pieces 5 and is hinged to the rear edge of the bottom 2 of a chair by a hinge 6.
Hinged to the front edge of the chair by a hinge 7 is a foot-rest 8, comprising a section of equal width with the chair-bottom and having side pieces 9 and an end piece 10 secured thereto. Rigidly secured to the hinged back is an arm 11, having its lower end hinged to an arm 12, which in turn has its forward end hinged to the rear side of the foot-rest, as iridicated by the numeral 13.
As a means for supporting the chairiri any adjusted position we provide a leg 14 ,having its upper end hinged to the back of the chair,
and to insure the automatic extension of the supporting-leg 14 we hinge to the under side thereof a short arm 15, which has its other end hinged to the transverse round connect-- ing the rear legs of the chair.
As a means for supporting the back at any desired angle with relation to the chair proper we provide an extensible leg 10, arranged and guided in a recess 17 in the lower portion of the supporting-leg 14:, in which recess said extensible leg 16 fits closely and accordingly is held by friction at any desired position.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that the movement of the foot-rest is dependent upon the movement of the back section and vice versa', and as the back 4 is moved rearwardly the leg 14 can be easily adjusted to the necessary position to support the same.
Thejierein-described invention is susceptible to minor changes involving mechanical skill, which we reserve the right to make within the scope of the invention without cleparting from the spirit thereof. WVe therefore do not desire to be understood aslimiting ourselves to the precise form of parts shown in the drawingsas, for ins 'ance, it would be clearly within the scopejo'f this invention to construct a chair and adapt the same for use by adults.
Having thus described ourinvention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ina chair the combination with the seat or bottom section and the legs supporting the same, of a back section hinged to the rear of the bottom section, a foot-rest hinged to the front of the bgttom'section, an arm rigidly secured to the back section and downwardly extending therefrom, an arm hinged with its ends to the free end of the rigid arm and to the foot;r"est respectively, a leg hinged to the back section and downwardly extending therefrom and provided in its lower portion witlian elongated recess, and an extensible leg slidingly and ad justably arranged in said ,recess and held therein-by frictionin its adjusted positions, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a chair the combination with the seat or bottom section and the legs supporting the same, of a back section hinged to the rear of the bottom section, a foot-rest hinged to the front of the bottom section, an arm rigidly secured to the back section and downwardly extending therefrom, an arm hinged with its ends to the free end of the rigid arm and to the foot-rest respectively, a leg hinged to the of the chair respectively, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subserib- 15 CARRIE E. EROWER. DANIEL W. Bl-LOWEH.
