G. J. RECORD.
DEVICE FOR GLO No. 604,079.-
SING CANS OR- OTHER REGEPTAGLES.
Ill...
Patented May 17,1898.
Hu a" nrrnn stares PATENT FFIQE.
GEORGE J. RECORD, OF CONNEAUT, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 604,079, dated May 17, 1898. Application filed January 3, 1898. Serial No. 665,403. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. RECORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conneaut, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Closing Cans or other Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices having the general form of pliers and used for forcing spring-seal caps into position in can-nozzles, can-tops, and wherever else these caps or seals are used for closing receptacles, the said plier-like devices having one jaw applied to the seal and the other to some part of the can.
The said invention consists, primarily, in a pair of plier-like devices having jaws of unequal length and provided with curved extensions, the lower extension being adapted to fit against the cylindrical side of a can, jar, or nozzle, and the upper extension overlapping a segment of the peripheral part of the seal in order that it may be conveniently and effectively used for forcing the seal into place.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a device embodying my invention applied to a can-nozzle for forcing the spring-seal or cap into place. Fig. 2 represents a view of the same from below when closed. Fig. 3 represents in perspective open, and Fig. 4 in side ele- Vation closed, a slightly-differing form of the same device used for closing the spring-seal covers of cans, pails, and similar receptacles.
In the said drawings, A and B designate the two handles of my device, which are provided with jaws A and B, having on their ends curvilinear horizontal extensions 0 and D, the last named, which is uppermost, extending beyond the corresponding extension 0 and fitting evenly into the same, as shown in Fig. 2, when the device is closed. The parts A, A, and D are in one integral casting and the parts B, B, and O in another, these two castings being pivoted together at a.
As shown in Fig. 1, when the seal or cap E is to be fitted into the nozzle F of a can Gr one side of the said seal or cap is introduced into the opening of the said nozzle, the extension D is made to rest on the other side of the said seal, its curvilinear form enabling it to overlap and press on a considerable extent of the peripheral part of the latter, while the curved edge of the lower extension 0 fits against the side of the said nozzle under the rim or upper bead thereof. By closing the right hand of the operator on the handles A B, afterthe manner of operating the jaws of a pair of pliers, the extension D of jaw A is forced down on the peripheral part of the said seal or cap and snaps it into place, the extension C meanwhile serving as a fulcrum by bearing against the can.
The form of my device shown in Figs. 3 and at is intended for use with seals or caps closing the entire top of a receptacle and therefore needs to have the extensions of its jaws of less curvature. This is especially true of the lower extension 0, which fits against the side of the can. The upper extension D may have more curvature, as shown. Itis connected to the handle A by a bent neck D instead of the jaw A aforesaid.
The manner of using for closure of the can is as above described.
For greater convenience and efficiency the jaws may be so far. spread apartfor example, by extending the lower jaw downward and suitably bending itthat the can, if a small one, may be taken lengthwise between the jaws in the act of closing.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for closing receptacles consisting of two pivoted parts in the form of pliers provided with lateral extensions curved in a horizontal plane, the upper one of which extends beyond the lower, the said upper extension being adapted to rest flat on the pcripheral part of a cap or seal, While the edge bear against the receptacle to which the said IO of the lower extension is adapted to fit against cap or seal is to be applied substantially as the side of a cylindrical receptacle or nozzle set forth.
substantially as set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature 2. A plier-like device for closing receptain presence of two witnesses.
