`so that the latter-maybe firmly supported in an upright position` IMPROVEMENT 1N rsi-Toss.
'tlge tlglmlfrefzmt tu in ttm Enters zrtmt ant making part ni the time TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN: p i
Be it known that I, THOMAS GLovEn, of Woodbury, New VJersey, have invented an Improvement in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a-full, clear, and exact ,description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v k p My invention consists of a post, a plate, andtwo detachable braces, which are constructed and arranged' M f j, as fully described hereafter, so that the fence rails may be readily connected to or detached `from the post, and i ,1
In order to enable others skilled in the art `to make my invention, I will now proceed to'desci'ibethe" con-` struction of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in whichl i i Figure 1 is a side view of a fence made according to my improvement. Figure 2, a sectional elevation on the line 1--2,` fig. '1; and v Figure 3, a sectional plan on the line 3-4, fig. 2. 4 l t V i i ,p p A is a vertical iron bar or post, which is secured at its lower end to a plate @suchend` of lthe latter being i t 1 bent downward, as shown in fig. 2, and having a slot z, iig. 3. .Through each` slctpassesa rod or brace b,"a` l i head c, or enlargement, at the lower end of which bears against the lower side of the plate a,`the upper ends` of the braces being secured to the Vpost Alby a detachable' bolt d, to which is fitted a nut. f `Onthe post i midway between the plate a and bolt d, is a shoulder e. WhenV a fence is tobe built, the required number 1 of posts A are embedded in the earth at suitable distances apart, and to such `a depthythat the shoulders e will be a short distance above the Vsurface of the ground. l The bolt d is then detached from `each post, and wooden strips or rails, X X, are secured to the posts, fas shown in the drawing, the posts` projecting thrdugh opening in the ends of the rails, and the lower rails bearing on 'the shoulders e, by which theyare maintained `above th surface of the ground. Openings are then made in the ends of the rail-s oppositethe upper` ends of` thefbra ,p b b, and the rails, posts, and braces are rmly secured together by thebolts d,lasshownvii 1 iig.`2. `As tlieupperl l ends of the braces b are secured to the post at a considerable distance from' the lower end of the latter, :the sai post is firmly supported,`and may, thereforebe lighter in weight than those posts to which the braces are connected at a point below the lowest rail. The braces being detachable, donotprevent the rails from `bein secured to the post below the point where the said `braces are connected to the same. The posts may be packed in a small compass, for transportation, by detaehing the braces b b, which may be done by removing `the bolt i d, depressing each brace until its head c is below the turned down end of the plate a, and then moving it outwar through the slot z. If desired, the braces may be attached permanently to the plate 1, or toda blockof `sten or other foundation secured to the lower end of the post. p
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patentp l 1. The post A and plate a, in combination with the braces b b and detachable `bolt d, `orits equiva1ent, 'whole being constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described. l* ,l v 2. The post A and plate a, with its slots :s az, in combination with the detachable braces b b enlarged at lower ends, for the purpose set forth. l 3. The shoulder e, on'the post A, for the purpose specified. .l y i p In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in` the presence of two subscribing witnesses. p l
THOMAS GLOVER.
