SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,766, dated November 2, 1897. Application filed February 8, 1897 -Serial No. 622,413. (No model.)

To all whom it mag concern:

Be it known that we, AUGUST EFFINGER, residing at Canton, and JOSIAH OLUTZ, residing at Massillon, Stark county, Ohio, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs or Pliers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part. of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a'view showing a portion of one of the jaws in section, illustrating the position of the pivoted or rocking shoe. Fig. 2 is a view showing portions of the handles and jaws, showing the different parts connected thereto detached. Fig. 3 is a view showing the parts properly assembled. Fig. 4 is a view showing portions of jaws and handles properly riveted together and illustrating a tilted position of the shoe. View showing a straight bar placed between the clamping-jaws. Fig. '6 is a perspective view showing a pair of pliers and the rocking shoe located on one of the jaws. Fig. 7 is a view showing a portion of the jaw designed to carry the rocking shoe. Fig. 8 is a detached view of the rocking shoe. Fig. 9 is a side elevation showing the rocking shoe reversed in its position from that shown in Fig. 4.

The present invention has relation to tongs or pliers; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 represent the handles, which may be formed of any desired length and are pivotally connected together and extended forward beyond their pivotal points to form thejaws 3 and 4. Thejaw 3 is provided upon its inner edge with the rib 5, which rib is located directly opposite the aperture 6. The rockingshoe 7 is pivotally attached to thejaw 3 by means of therivet 8, which rivet is passed through apertures 9 formed in the shoe.

The object and purpose of providing the Fig. 5 is a similar rib 5 is to provide a bearing-point for theshoe 7 and thereby remove the strain from therivet 8, and at the same time to allow free rocking movement to theshoe 7 upon thejaw 3.

In'Figs.- 4, 5, 6, and 9 we have illustrated our invention as applied to pliers, said invention being the same as that shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, except that thehandles 10 are formed somewhat shorter and are curved somewhat different, but otherwise the construction is the same, and said handles are pivotallyconnected together and extended forward beyond their pivotal points to form thejaws 12 and 13. To thejaw 13 is pivotally attached therocking shoe 14, which rocking shoe is attached in the same manner as that of theshoe 7, except it is somewhat reduced in size and its form is slightly different from that shown inshoe 7, the difference being that therearward extensions 15 may be dispensed with, if desired, but this is not absolutely necessary, inasmuch as the extensions may be formed upon therocking shoe 14, bothshoes 7 and 14 being provided with theflanges 16 and 17, said flanges being substantially the same in both instances.

The rockingshoes 7 and 14 are provided with straight faces or edges upon their outer sides, which straight faces or edges press upon the rounded rib 5, thereby leaving a very small contact-point between the. rocking shoe and the jaw to which it is attached. By this arrangement the movement of the rocking shoe is not interfered with by the expansion of the metal when it becomes heated, but leaves the shoe free to rock at all times.

It will be understood that by our peculiar arrangement the rockingshoes 7 and 14 will automatically adjust themselves upon the jaw to which they are attached to conform with the shape of the object clamped between the jaws of the pliers or tongs. For the purpose of assisting in holding theshoe 7 in proper position theextensions 15 are provided, which extensions extend rearward and overlap the side faces of the jaw to which it is attached.

It will be understood that by providing theextensions 15 and extending them to a considerable distance rearward the strain will be removed from the rivet, inasmuch as theshoe 7 will follow the lateral movement of the jaw to which it is attached, thereby enabling the tongs to be used in handling heavy material without injury to the rivet or shoe. This object is very important and prevents the shoe from becoming'sprung and therefore inoperative.

If desired, the face of the rocking jaw may be milled, as illustrated in the drawings, and also the jaw opposite said rocking shoe, and we have illustrated one of the shoes plain and another milled, but this is simply a question of judgment in the way of manufacture.

It will be understood that by our peculiar arrangement all of'the strain is removed from therivet 8, thereby reducing the wear of said rivet and at the same time providing such a device that the shoe will easily rock to adjust itself to irregular-shaped objects placed between the jaws.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the handles pivotally attached together and extended to form jaws, one of said jaws provided with the rounded rib '5, said rib projected from the inner face of said jaw to form the are of a circle, arocking shoe provided with a straight edge or face thron ghout its entire length, said straight edge or face resting upon the rounded rib 5, said rocking shoe pivotally connected to the jaw and provided with the overlapping extensions orflanges 15, extended rearward and overlapping the side faces of the jaw to which the shoe is pivotally attached, all arranged substantially as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
