(No Model.)
G. K. SHELTON.
SLATE.
Patented Apr. 13, 1897.
IN VEN TOR WITNESSES: C/A aw m: Norms warms cu. PHOYO-L1THO., WASHINGTON, n c.
GEORGE KING SHELTON,
or WEKIVA, FLORIDA.
SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,513, dated April 13,1897.
Application filed February 6, 1896. Serial No. 578,192. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE KING SHEL'roN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of W'ekiva, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to slates such as are usually employed in schools, offices, business houses, and other places; and the object thereof is to provide an effective device of this class which may be used as an ordinary slate and which is also provided with rollers at each end thereof, on one of which a roll of paper may be mounted, the construction and arrangement being such that the said roll of paper may be wound on the opposite roller as fast as it is used.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved slate; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 an edge View.
111 the practice of my invention I provide a slate A, which is composed of the usual material and which is preferably rectangular in form and which may be of any desired size, and the slate A is mounted in a frame consisting of side bars B, which are preferably square or angular in cross-section, and end tubes 0 and D, which are connected therewith by means of straps E, and each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot 0 which is formed therein and on the same side of the slate A.
The body portion of the tubes 0 and D is circular in form, but the inner sides of the ends thereof are fiat, as shown at 01, so as to fit snugly against the ends of the side bars B, and mounted in each of the tubes 0 and D is a rod or roller G, on one of which is mounted a roll of paper II, which is adapted to be carried along the surface of the slate and to be wound upon the opposite roller, as shown in Fig. 2.
Each of the rollers G is provided with a head or end piece g by which it is held in place, and each is also provided with a thumbnut g by which it may be turned, and the operation will be readily understoodfrom the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
It will be understood, of course, that the slate A may be used in the ordinary manner .and that the ordinary slate-pencil may be used for writing thereon or making calculations, while an ordinary lead-pencil may be used on the paper II for a similar purpose, and especially when it is desired that a record be made or the calculations made thereon be retained as a record.
It will be apparent that a new roll of paper may be substituted whenever the old one is consumed, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the of which is provided with a longitudinal slot 0 formed therein, and on the same side of the slate A, the said tubes B and 0, being circular in form having the inner sides of the ends thereof formed flat and adapted to fit snugly against the ends of the side bars B, a roller G, mounted in each of the tubes 0, and D, on one of which is mounted a roll of paper which is adapted to be carried along the surface of the slate and wound around the opposite roller, substantially as described. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 31st day of January, 1896.
GEORGE KING SHELTON. Witnesses:
R. H. WRIGHT, T. PIo'roN BAUMGAR'IEN.
