DEVICE FOR HANDLING LUMBER'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 578,832, dated March 16, 41897. Application filed August 1'7J 1896. Serial No. 602,970. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JEROME B. POPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minco, in the county of Pontotoc, Indian Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Handling Lumber; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a device forhandling lumber when in a pile or otherwise, and is called by me a lumber-pull.
It consists of two pivoted levers having points upon one end thereof so arranged that when the other ends are grasped by the hand and clasped together the points will sink into the end and side of the piece of lumber and hold sufioiently to enable the piece to be drawn out of or moved upon the pile.
The figure is a view of my device.
It consists of two levers B and D, pivoted at E. One of these leversD is approximately straight. Both of the levers back of the pivotpoint are given a half turn or twist. The lever D beyond the pivot-point or upon the short end thereof is curved around and sharpened, as at F. Back of the pivot-point it is given the quarter-turn, and the other end is also curved up so as to iit' the hand. The other lever B crosses the first lever at right angles, and just back of the pivot-point is bent at a right angle, so that the long arm will lie parallel to the other lever. This has a loop or eye formed in its rear end. The position of said loop and the curve upon the rear end of the lever D are so placed in relation to each other that they may be grasped by the hand, the fingers of the hand remaining forward of the curve in the rear end of the lever D and the thumb passing through the loop in the rear end of the lever B.
In using my device the point Gr upon the4 short end of the lever B is placed against the end of the board or stick of timber which it is desired to handle. The other point F upon the leverB rests upon the top of the board. The iirstpoint G is pressed into the end of the board and then the arms ofthe lever are brought together. This presses the point F into the side of the board a short distance back fromthe end. This will hold firmly, and a strong pull upon the device may be exerted without loosening the points. By
-this device it is a simple matter to securely catch hold of any board or stick of timber, even if only a very small portion of the end of it is accessible. It also enables timbers of considerable size to be firmly grasped without being able to get under them.
This device will be found very convenient about lumber-yards and other places where lumber is stored and handled. It is very simple of construction and of such small size and weight that it may be kept always by a person.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device for handling lumber, consisting of two pivoted levers, one of said levers having a recurved point upon its outer end and being recurved at its rear end to fit the hand, the other lever being of a bell-crank shape and having a point projecting from its short end toward the iirst point, and the rear end of said lever having a loop therein, substantially as described.
2. In adevice for handlinglumber, the combination of a straight lever having upon oneend thereof a recurved hook and a recurved hand-guard upon the opposite end, both of the same curving toward the same side of the lever, with a bell-crank lever pivoted to the said lever and having a sharp point projecting from the short end thereof toward the hook upon the first lever, the short arm of the bell-crank lever being about half the length of the short arm of the straight lever, and a loop in the rear end of the bell-crank lever, substantially as described.V
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEROME B. POPE.
