SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,189, dated November 10, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANCIS MARION Cook, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tupelo, in the county of Jackson and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Oolter-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for securely holding colters to plows, and it has for its object to provide a holder of this character by which the colter may be easily and quickly attached to or detached from a plow, and furthermore, to so construct such holder as to permit the colter being readily adjusted to suit the requirements of various conditions of work.

To this end the invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated,and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a holder constructed in accordance with the present invention and illustrated in applied position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the holder. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4is an end view with the colter removed.

Similar numerals of reference indicate cor- Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a substantially triangular-shaped bracket comprising a securing-plate 2, a downwardly-projectin g arm 3, and a curved brace 4, all of which are formed of any suitable material and cast in a single piece. It will be noted that the downWardly-proj ectingarm 3 is inclined from its point of connection with the securingplate 2 to the curved brace 4, the object of which will be hereinafter stated.

Formed integral with the securing-plate 2, at one of its ends, is a pair of spaced lugs5, having anotch 6 between them, and thearm 3 at its lower end and in vertical alinement with thelugs 5 is also provided with a pair of spaced lugs 7. Between the lugs 7 is anotch 8, similar to thenotch 6,such notches 6 and 8 being adapted to receive anordinary colter 9. Thearm 3, adjacent to thecolter 9,

Mounted upon the ends of the rods 11 isa clamp-block 14, one side of which is provided with aninclined groove 15, corresponding to the incline of thearm 3 and adapted to fit thecolter 9; and for binding the block 14 against said colter,nuts 16 are screwed upon the ends of the rods 11 and thereby securely retain the colter in thenotches 6 and 8.

The bracketl may be secured to the under side of a plow-beam in any suitable manner; but I preferably employ bolts 17, which pass through apertures 18, formed in thelugs 5, and ascrew 19, disposed in anaperture 20 at the end of the securing-plate 2, opposite to thelugs 5. The bolts 17 andscrew 19 enter the beam of the plow at its under side and effectually hold the bracket thereto.

From the foregoing the advantages of the herein-described colter-holder will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. After the bracket has been secured to the plow the colter is placed in thenotches 6 and 8, between the tie-rods 11, and the clamp-block 14 is mounted upon the ends of said rods. Thegroove 15 of the clamp-block receives the colter, and when thenuts 16 are screwed upon the tie-rods 11 the block 14 is forced against the colter, thereby binding the latter tothebracket 1 and securely holding the same. It Will therefore be seen that I have provided a colter holder which may be cheaply and easily manufactured, and adapted for use with any ordinary plow. The colter may be easily and quickly attached to or detached from the bracket, and by reason of the clamp-block 14 the colter may be either raised or lowered, thereby providing for different conditions of the work to be performed. It will also be apparent that from the incline of thearm 3 and the peculiar shape of thebracket 1 great strength is imparted to such bracket, and the colter is thus held at .an

angle to the ground, and by the use of my improved holder the necessity of such long colters, as heretofore employed, is overcome.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A colter-holder, comprising a triangularshaped bracket secured to the under side of a plow-beam, a clamp-block for securing a colter to the bracket, and tie-rods for binding the clamp-block against the colter and securing the latter to the bracket, substantially as set forth.

2. A co1ter-holder, comprising a triangularshaped bracket, secured to the under side of a plow-beam, spaced lugs cast integral with the bracket for receiving a colter, a clamp-block having a groove in one of its sides and adapted to fit one edge of the colter, and tie-rods tie-rods for binding the clamp-block against the colter and securing the latter to the bracket, substantially as set forth.

4. A colter-holder, comprising a bracket having a securing-plate provided with an inclined downwardly projecting arm and a curved brace connected to the securing-plate and the downwardly-projecting arm,lugs cast integral with the bracket at its upper and lower ends and forming notches for receiving a colter, a clamp-block having a groove in one of its sides adapted to fit one edge of the colter, and tie-rods secured to the bracket and extending beyond the colter at each side thereof, said rods having the clamp-block mounted thereon and provided with nuts for binding the said clamp-block against the colter and securing the latter to the bracket, substantially as set forth.
