SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,527, dated August 25, 1896.

Application filed June 18, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM thus, a citizen of theUm'ted States of America,residing at Luzerne, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to an improvement in drills and particularly to such as are adapted for use in coal, 650., the obj cct of the invention being to provide a drill with a sectional bit which may be easily and quickly removed and which will be less liable to become separated than those now in use.

With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts to be more fully set forth in the specification, and pointed out in the claim. i

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention apertains may fully understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation in detail, referring by number to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a detail sectional View of my device using two cutters. Fig. 2 is a similar view of my device using one cutter and one plug; and Fig. 3 is also a similar view, but using two plugs.

In the drawings, 1 represents the spiral drill-shank, having formed on its end a bitsocket 2, which is oblong in cross-section and has tapering side walls 3, and at is a bit having a tapering head with a hole 5 in its side and ordinary cutting-edges 6 on its end. In either side of the socket is a cutter 7, having a shank 8, with parallel sides and a curved Serial No. 595,951. (No model.)

These shanks are adapted to be placed between the head of the bit and the walls of the socket, and occupy all the space therebetween and have formed on their inner ends inwardly projecting lugs 10, adapted to rest on the bottom of the socket and extend backward of the bit-head. Thus it will readily be seen that when the bolt 11 is placed through the hole 5 of the bit-head and corresponding holes of the socket the bit and cutters will be firmly held in their positions against displacement by reason of their peculiar shape.

In case it is desirable to use only one cutter, I provide plugs 12 to take the place of one of the cutters, as shown in Fig. 2, and these plugs are identical in shape with the shank of the cutters except they terminate just outside the socket, or they may be used alone by replacing each of the cutters with a plug, as shown in Fig. 3.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a drill, a spiral drill-shank, a tapering socket formed on the end thereof, a bit having a tapering head adapted to fit in said socket and cutters haying parallel sides adapted to fit between the bit-head and the socket inwardly-projecting lugs formed on the inner ends of the cutters adapted to overlap the head of the bit and retain the cutters thereby, and a bolt passed through the bit and socket, as and for the purpose described.
