Abstract

A monitor system for acquiring medical data from a plurality of sensors adapted for attachment to a patient. The system is distributed over at least two geographically separate patient monitoring areas via a communication network and includes a portable monitor and at least two monitor docking stations. The portable monitor is adapted for coupling to the plurality of sensors, for receiving, processing and displaying patient data signals acquired from the plurality of sensors when said sensors are attached to the patient. At least one docking station is located in each of the two patient monitoring areas and are connected to one another for transmission of patient data therebetween via the communication network. Each docking station comprises a mechanical latching mechanism for detachably coupling the portable monitor to the docking station, a first data transfer circuit arrangement for transferring patient data between the portable monitor and the docking station when the portable monitor is coupled to the docking station; and a second data transfer circuit arrangement for transferring monitor set-up information between the portable monitor and the docking station when the portable monitor is coupled to the docking station. The monitor set-up information controls the operating characteristics of the portable monitor.

Description

This application is a continuation-in-part of Ser. No. 08/401,332, filed Mar. 9, 1995.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to medical systems, and in particular to portable patient monitoring systems for continuously collecting, storing, and displaying medical data.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In hospitals and other health care environments, it is often necessary to continuously collect and analyze a variety of medical data from a patient. These data may include electrocardiogram, temperature, blood pressure, respiration, pulse and other parameters.
Patient monitoring systems have typically fallen into one of two general categories: multi-function monitoring, recording and displaying systems which process and collect all of the data desired, but are bulky and difficult to transport; and small, portable systems which are easy to transport, but process and collect fewer types of data and have limited storage capability. Initially (e.g., in an ambulance or an emergency room) a patient is connected to a simple, portable monitor to observe a limited number of medical attributes, such as EKG or non-invasive blood pressure. As the patient moves to higher care facilities (e.g., an intensive care unit or operating room) it is desirable to augment these simple monitors to observe additional parameters. Generally, this is accomplished by disconnecting the patient from the simple monitor and connecting the patient to a monitoring system having more robust capabilities.
The need for continuity of data collection and display is most pressing in emergency situations. During an emergency, the speed at which a patient is transferred from a bed to an operating room or intensive care unit may substantially impact the patient's chance of survival. It is important to provide the same level of monitoring in transport as at the stationary bedside. It is desirable from a clinical point of view to provide a continuous monitoring capability and data history availability which follows the patient.
Two major considerations in the design of transport monitoring systems are the ease and speed of system reconfiguration. It is undesirable to disconnect from the patient a set of sensors coupled to a fixed location monitoring system, and then attach a new set of sensors coupled to a portable monitor immediately prior to transportation or administration of critical procedures. It is equally undesirable to switch monitoring systems, from a fixed location monitoring system to a portable monitoring system for transport, due to disconnection/reconnect of the individual sensors.
U.S. Pat. No. 5,375,604, titled TRANSPORTABLE MODULAR PATIENT MONITOR, assigned to the same Assignee as the present invention, describes a transportable patient monitoring system of the type including a docking station which both physically and electrically supports a transportable patient monitor.
Although the system described in the '604 patent is a vast improvement over the prior art, further improvement is desirable. In this regard, it is noted that patient care areas are geographically distributed throughout hospitals or other health care facilities. Traditionally each of these areas is equipped with a patient monitor having fixed set-ups, e.g., a fixed configuration (or set of configurations) in accordance with the users preference, and a fixed set of software applications. Examples of configuration items include physiological alarm limits, display screen layouts (such as waveform display priority, waveform size, display speed and brightness, etc) and speaker volume. Examples of software applications include: recall & edit of arrhythmia waveforms, remote view of other patient monitors and graphical calculators of hemodynamic parameters. Recently, portable monitoring systems are becoming more popular. However, these systems also have fixed configurations and use a fixed set of software applications.
While each area may be able and willing to use the same type of patient monitor, each typically has different set-up needs; the way that its monitors are configured and the types of software applications that they run. For example, an Operating Room (OR) may need a monitor with very bright display settings and a software application which analyzes cardiac arrhythmias. An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) may not need Arrhythmia analysis, but may need a software application to calculate drug dosages. In addition, the ICU may wish that its monitors be configured with low display intensity and have a different waveform priority.
It is desirable to have a patient monitoring system in which portable patient monitors can have variable set-ups, with variable monitor configuration and a variable set of software applications that can be run whenever the monitor is moved from one patient care area to another.
It would be desirable for such variable set-ups to easily occur when the monitor is moved from one patient monitoring area to another. Automatic reconfiguration of the monitor set-ups as defined at the new area would also be desirable.
It is an object of the present invention to provide such a reconfigurable portable patient monitoring system.
It is an additional object of the present invention to provide such a reconfigurable portable patient monitoring system wherein the steps required to reconfigure the system can be easily, quickly, and reliably performed, in order to reduce what can often be very precious time needed to prepare the patient and monitoring system for transport to an operating room or intensive care unit.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
A monitor system for substantially continuously acquiring medical data from a plurality of sensors adapted for attachment to a patient. The system is distributed over at least two geographically separate patient monitoring areas via a communication network. The system comprises a portable monitor adapted for coupling to the plurality of sensors, for substantially continuously receiving, processing and displaying patient data signals acquired from the plurality of sensors when said sensors are attached to said patient. The system also includes at least two monitor docking stations, with at least one docking station being located in each of the at least two patient monitoring areas and connected to one another for transmission of patient data via the communication network. Each docking station comprises; means for detachably coupling the portable monitor to the docking station; first transfer means for transferring patient data between the portable monitor and the docking station when the portable monitor is coupled to the docking station; and second transfer means for transferring monitor set-up information between the portable monitor and the docking station when the portable monitor is coupled to the docking station, said monitor set-up information controlling the operation of the portable monitor when it is coupled to the docking station.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EXEMPLARY EMBODIMENTS
An exemplary patient monitoringdocking station system 100 including adocking station 111 for reconfiguring a portable monitor in accordance with the present invention is shown in FIG. 1. Aportable monitor 102 acquires physiological data signals from a plurality of sensors (not shown), which may include both invasive and non-invasive devices for collecting physiological data from a patient. Theportable monitor 102 displays the physiological data, and transmits patient data signals to docking station 111 (It will be understood by one skilled in the art that the term "patient data", as used herein, may refer to the processed information derived from the signals produced by sensors attached to the patient. Thus "patient data" in this sense may include, for example, red, green and blue raster-scan video signals to drive a slave display, or signals to provide status and control information to control peripheral devices). Thedocking station 111 provides power and communications services to theportable monitor 102 whilemonitor 102 is mounted on the docking station. The mounting mechanism provides for rapid connection/disconnection ofmonitor 102 from docking station 111 (both mechanically and electrically) for transport. Preferably, the connection/disconnection is accomplished in a single step, so that the user can easily "pick-up and go" withmonitor 102 to transport it to another location in the monitoring system, without handling any individual cables or connectors.
Docking station 111 includes three modular components. The first two components are monitor and peripheral docking station platforms 110' and 110'', respectively. A docking station platform which supports aportable monitor 102 is referred to as a monitor docking station 110' and a docking station platform which supports a peripheral device is referred to as a peripheral docking station 110''.Portable monitor 102 may be placed on docking station platform 110', which may be positioned in the patient area, for example, near the patient's bed or attached to the bedframe. Peripheral docking station 110'' provides mechanical support and electrical connections for peripheral equipment such as astrip chart recorder 164 or other such devices. Peripheral docking station 110'' provides a means for these peripheral devices to communicate with local area networks andportable monitors 102. The peripheral docking station 110'' is nearly identical in mechanical form and function to the monitor docking station 110'; however, it has a different electrical connector and is keyed in such a way as to prevent portable monitors from being connected to a peripheral docking station and vice versa. As used herein, the term portable devices is comprisesportable monitors 102,recorders 164 or other devices which can be mounted on adocking station platform 110.
Docking station platforms 110 provide both mechanical support forportable monitor 102 andrecorder 164, as well as connections tobedside display 120, a source of operatingpower 134, and a largeformat video display 124.Docking Station 111 can also communicate with local area networks (LANs) viacouplings 170, 172 and 174, and, via the networks, may provide communications with a computer or anintelligent workstation 122.Docking station 111 provides a simple mechanism to connect portable monitoring devices with several devices and networks without the need to connect individual cables for each device or network. Data and power connectors on thedocking station platform 110 and on the cases of the portable devices (102, 164) allow simultaneous physical and electrical couplings to be established.
The third component of the docking station is a power supply andnetwork box 140 referred to herein aswallbox 140, and in an alternative embodiment shown in FIGS. 2 and 4, as a power supply and network box (PSN) 240. In the FIG. 1 embodiment,wallbox 140 is physically included indocking station 111. In the FIG. 2 (and 4) embodiment,wallbox 140 is physically separate fromdocking station platforms 110, and is coupled todocking station platforms 110 viaconnectors 110a and 110h ofcable 110m, as shown in FIG. 2. In either embodiment, the functions provided bywallbox 140 andPSN 240 are very similar, and throughout the description this should be kept in mind.Wallbox 140 provides power for operatingmonitor 102 and for charging a battery pack within (or attached to) monitor 102.Wallbox 140 also provides communications links to networks and devices, both inside and outside of the room in whichdocking station 111 is located.
Eight multi-vendor ports (MVP) 130 are provided to connect serial devices to the portable monitor and remote stations on the network using a known communications interface, e.g., the RS-232 interface standard.
Portable monitor 102 is a self-contained, standalone monitoring system.Monitor 102 includes all of the processing electronics necessary to process, display and store patient data during transport. In the exemplary embodiment described herein,portable monitor 102 does not include a broad suite of network interfaces; during transport, theexemplary monitor 102 does not have any connections to a central monitoring system or to communications networks.Portable monitor 102 has a rechargeable battery pack for use during transport. Portable monitor is also capable of receiving power from an external power supply. Power may be received fromwallbox 140 by way ofdocking station platform 110, and, in the portable version ofwallbox 140, i.e.,PSN 240, it can be received using an electrical cable or by direct mounting ofPSN 240 on the case ofmonitor 102.
Thebedside display 120 may be a slave unit receiving signals for display fromdocking station 111. Alternately,bedside display 120 may be an intelligent display unit, complete with a user interface. Alternately, the bedside display may be anintelligent workstation 122 with a VGA display and conventional disk storage.
FIG. 2 shows an isometric view of an exemplary embodiment of the invention, including adocking station platform 110, aPSN 240, and monitorassembly 100 of FIG. 1. Thedocking station platform 110 is connected toPSN 240 by one ormore cables 142.Portable monitor 102 is mounted on docking station platform 110', providing physical support, power, and communications.Monitor 102 acquires physiological data signals fromdata acquisition pods 150 and 152.Pod 150 provides data from ECG, SpO2 and Temperature sensors.Pod 152 provides data from Invasive Blood Pressure, Cardiac Output and Temperature sensors. A Non-invasiveBlood Pressure cartridge 160 and an Endtidal CO2 cartridge 162 collect additional patient data.Cartridges 160 and 162, and abattery pack 166 are individually attached to the case ofportable monitor 102 for purposes of illustration. Therecorder 164 is shown connected to the monitor system via mounting on docking station 110''. Note: FIG. 2 is illustrative of multipledocking station platforms 110 in a specific patient monitoring area. In a hospital or other health care facilitydocking station platforms 110 will be distributed throughout the facility in geographically separate areas, yet they will all be connected to one another for transfer of patient data viawallboxes 140, PSN's 240 and the system communication networks.
FIG. 3 shows an exploded view of an exemplarydocking station platform 110 to which portable devices may be attached.Cable 110m carries electrical signals from thePSN 240 to the portable device, through the docking station.Cable 268 conveys the signals onconductors 126 through 139 shown in FIG. 1. Theconnector 110a at the docking station end ofcable 110m is attached to atrolley 110g and theconnector 110h at the other end ofcable 110m is attached to the portable devices.
A docking stationtop cover 110b not only functions as a protective cover, but also as a guide for mounting the various portable devices thereon.Cover 110b provides initial alignment using tapered outer edges and smooth rounded outer surfaces. Once aligned, contours along the outside top cover funnel the portable device into accurate final alignment, usingpositioning keys 110f.Keys 110f comprise one of more shaped indentation in the surface oftop cover 110b. Once positioned, lockingrail snaps 110d, flexibly protruding from the left and right sides ontop cover 110b, fix the device to the docking station. Docking stationelectrical connector 110a is then engaged with the corresponding electrical connector in the portable device by moving alever arm 110c, which cams thedocking station trolley 110g forward to mate with the corresponding connector in the portable device. The portable device is disengaged by movinglever arm 110c back to the initial position and release is accomplished by movinglever arm 110c an additional amount, using the reverse motion of the cam to retract the flexible locking snaps 110d from protruding from the sides oftop cover 110b, thereby unlocking the portable device from the portable docking station.
Positioningkeys 110f facilitate accurate alignment of the portable device and thedocking station platform 110. In addition, these keys prevent inadvertent placement of a portable monitor on an peripheral docking station platform 110', or a peripheral device (i.e. recorder) onto a monitor docking station platform 110''.
Many variations of the docking station mechanical configuration are possible. There may be different technologies used to transmit data betweenportable monitor 102 anddocking station 111. Examples of these technologies include infra red and radio frequency transmission techniques. It is understood by one skilled in the art that several such technologies are possible to be used with or as a replacement forcable 110m.
A mountingadaptor 110e may be used to attach thedocking station platform 110 in a variety of locations, including but not limited to: an intravenous (IV) pole (not shown), a shelf, a mounting arm or a bed frame. When mounting thedocking station platform 110 to a bed or IV pole, both of which are movable, it is desirable to provide a fixedposition wallbox 140 for coupling the docking station with power, devices and networks outside of the room in which the docking station is located. APSN 240 mounted on a wall is suitable for this purpose.
Referring again to FIG. 3,cable 110m provides power to the portable device as well as data communications links from portable device to external devices and networks, when portable devices are ondocking station platform 110.Cable 110m may be a conventional connector which interfaces directly to a local area network (LAN). The network may use one of a variety of known LAN protocols, such as carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD). Additionally, the data may be output to a conventional patient monitoringsystem bedside display 120 and/or to a customizedintelligent workstation 122.Docking station 111 electrically isolates electrical paths connected to theportable monitor 102.
Docking station 111 provides 12 volt DC power to theportable monitor 102 viacable 110m, for operating the device when it is mounted on thedocking station platform 110.Portable monitor 102 includes a battery charger and a nickel-cadmium battery 166 (shown in FIG. 1). The battery charger includes connectors and a switch to provide charge to the battery. Thedocking station 111 transmits a signal to the battery charger to activate the switch, so that the battery charger rechargesbattery 166 while theportable monitor 102 is mounted on the docking station.
Theportable monitor 102 includes alarm processing for the physiological parameters monitored. Theportable monitor 102 provides an alarm signal to thedocking station 111 if any of these alarm conditions is present. Thedocking station 111 includes a separate line withincable 110m for receiving alarm signals, if these signals are generated by the portable monitor while it is mounted on the docking station. An alarm output signal is received bydocking station platform 110 and transmitted vialine 126 to thewallbox 140 for closing relays to activate local alarm devices, such as a light or siren.
Docking station 111 may also receive from portable monitor 102 a synchronization signal which may be used to trigger a defibrillator. This signal may then output from thePSN 240.
FIG. 4 shows a powersupply network box 240.PSN 240 couples thedocking station platform 110 to communications links which may include a plurality of local area networks (LANs) or serial or parallel-bit data links. ThePSN 240 includes buffer amplifiers to condition the docking station output signals for transmission over these LANs. In the secondary exemplary embodiment, thePSN 240 includes a network interface card (not shown) which provides two way communication between the portable device and other equipment connected to theLAN 174. ThisLAN 174 connects portable devices andbedside display 120 with remote stations for transferring patient data. The remote stations may be patient monitoring systems or computers. ThisLAN 174 is configured to produce message delays of less than 2 seconds. It is understood by one skilled in the art that a several LAN protocols may be used forLAN 174.
In the exemplary embodiment,PSN 240 provides a direct video connection to abedside display 120 using a protocol such as the Electronics Industries Association's RS-232-C Interface Standard. When theportable monitor 102 is on thedocking station platform 110, monitor 102drives bedside display 120, using the RS-232-C link. Alternatively,PSN 240 may include a second conventional interface card (not shown) for interfacing a second LAN 172 (referred to as the Device LAN), which may, for example, be a 10 Mbit/sec. CSMA/CD LAN, to thePSN 240. The Device LAN is used within a patient's room or operating room, or to distribute patient data via a central station. The Device LAN provides the main communications path to transfer patient data from theportable monitor 102 to abedside display 120 within the same room in near real-time. This LAN is configured to maintain short delays and to allow a nominal 200 msec. response time between devices.
PSN 240 includes a third interface card (not shown) and aseparate connection 138 which provides a coupling to an additional LAN for connecting input and output devices. This additional LAN may use a protocol such as High Level Datalink Control (HDLC) with device polling, for predictable response time. This additional LAN is referred to as theMicro LAN 170. The Micro LAN is used to connect input and output devices to theportable monitor 102 by way of thedocking station 111. These devices (shown in FIG. 1) may includekeyboards 182, pointingdevices 184,voice recognition 186 device, abar code reader 188, a label printer 190, and aremote control 192. Theremote control 192 may be either wired or infrared (IR). The wired remote control may be more desirable in an operating room (OR) environment, because the OR lights may distort IR control signals.
Although in the exemplary embodiments three distinct LANs are used for connecting the docking station to remote stations, to local stations (i.e., those within the same room) and to I/O devices, it is understood by those skilled in the field of data communications that a variety of network configurations may be used to achieve a desired level of performance and reliability for these different types of traffic. In addition, the network configuration may be tailored to protect patients by isolating a device or class of devices on a separate LAN to prevent accidental or unauthorized use. Smaller installations may implement a single local area network within a site to accommodate all of the patient monitoring traffic.
PSN 240 (and wall box 140) includes a de-multiplexer and a D/A converter (not specifically shown) which receives digital data fromportable monitor 102 and generates a plurality of analog waveform signals from the digital data. The analog signals are sent toport 129. Four analog output ports provide waveform data for transmission to external devices (e.g., displays, recorders). Thus, existing analog equipment may be connected to the portable monitor (which provides patient data in digital form in the exemplary embodiment) in order to display data collected by the monitor. By de-multiplexing inside the PSN 240 (as opposed to within theportable monitor 102 or the docking station platform 110), the electrical couplings betweenmonitor 102 anddocking station platform 110, and betweendocking station platform 110 andPSN 240 are simplified.
PSN box 240 detachably mounts to the wall, bed or some other support on abracket 260. As shown in FIG. 4,bracket 260 may be permanently attached to a wall or other permanent surface, using conventional fasteners driven through mountingholes 261.
In the exemplary embodiment, a plate (not specifically shown) on the back ofPSN box 240 slides down into achannel 266 formed betweengrooves 262 and 264 of abracket 260.Bracket 260 may be permanently attached to a wall or other permanent surface, using conventional fasteners driven through mountingholes 261.PSN box 240 includes a plurality ofconnectors 244, 245, 246, 247, 248, 249 and 250 for receiving respective cables (not shown). The cables couple thePSN box 240 to networks and to power, as described above with reference toPSN 240 as shown in FIG. 3.Connector 250 receives AC power from the room.Connectors 244 and 245 provide general purpose serial ports.Connector 246 provides serial and video connection to thebedside display 120.Connector 247 provides connection to theLAN 174.Connectors 248 and 249 provide connectors toperipheral docking stations 111.PSN box 240 also includes an enclosedchimney heat sink 242.
As shown in the forenoted U.S. Pat. No. 5,375,604,PSN 240 can also be attached to monitor 102 in a "semi-permanent" manner. WhenPSN 240 is attached directly to monitor 102, thedocking station platform 110 is not used.
ThePSN Box 240 shown in FIG. 4 is just one example of the mechanical and electrical configurations that are possible forPSN 240. Other configurations may include a version that mounts directly toportable monitor 102 or a version with fewer or more circuit boards and connectors. In the configuration shown in FIG. 4,PSN box 240 takes over part of the functionality provided by the docking station 111 (i.e., the functionality of wallbox 140).
Although theexemplary PSN 240 shown in FIG. 4 does not have as many ports aswallbox 140 shown in FIG. 1, it is understood by one skilled in the art that a PSN box may be configured with the same number and types of ports aswallbox 140. Internally, PSN may include the same configuration of network interface cards and electronics aswallbox 140. It is understood by one skilled in the art thatPSN 240 may be constructed with additional interfaces as desired, or the suite of interfaces may be reduced in scope for use in smaller installations, such as theexemplary PSN 240.
The primary difference betweenwallbox 140 andPSN box 240 is the mechanical packaging. In the configuration shown in FIG. 4,PSN box 240 is a functionally limited version ofwallbox 140.
FIGS. 5a-5e illustrate various scenarios of movement ofportable monitor 102. Although FIG. 2 illustrates only a single docking station 111 (comprisingmultiple platforms 110 connected to a common PSN 240), it must be remembered that in a health care facility, there aremultiple docking stations 111 which are physically separate from one another and spread throughout the monitoring area. For example, they are typically located in geographically separate patient monitoring areas, such as different patient rooms and different patient beds in the emergency, operating and intensive care rooms. Before aportable monitor 102 is connected, via aplatform 110 to aPSN 240, it has set-ups consisting of the default set-ups programmed into its memories by the manufacturer, or set-ups that are currently being used. Upon connection to anew PSN 240 upon arriving at a new patient monitoring area, set-up information comprising software application information and monitor configurations programmed intoPSN memories 501 and 502, i.e., Random Access Memories (RAM), are loaded intoRAM memories 503 and 504 inmonitor 102 viacable 268. Monitor configurations comprise, i.e., waveform display priorities, waveform speed size, display brightness, monitor audio volume, etc, and monitor software application information comprising security keys needed to enable the running inmonitor 102 of specific patient data processing software, or the software applications themselves.
FIG. 5b illustrates monitor 102 during transport, i.e., it is separated fromdocking station 111. In this case, RAM's 503 and 504 inmonitor 102 maintain its set-ups as determined in the ER.
FIG. 5c illustratesmonitor 102 after connection to thePSN 240 which is located in the Operating Room (OR).OR PSN 240 includes as one of its memories an EEPROM loaded with the OR software applications and monitor configurations. The set-ups are then transferred to monitor 102 upon its connection to its ORdocking station 110, either automatically upon electrical connection toplatform 110 or upon user activation of a set-up switch/pushbutton (not shown).
FIG. 5d illustrates transport ofmonitor 102 to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Note, during transport,memories 503 and 504 inmonitor 102 maintain the set-up information (monitor configuration and software applications) that were programmed into it at the OR.
FIG. 5e illustrates the reconfiguration ofmonitor 102 set-ups upon its connection todocking station platform 110 at the ICU. Note that at the ICU, site specific set-ups (also stored in EEPROM's in thePSN 240 located at the ICU) are then transferred tomemories 503 and 504 inmonitor 102.
FIG. 6 illustrates a functional block diagram of portions ofmonitor 102 anddocking station 111 relevant to understanding of the present invention.Docking station 111 includes a non-volatile memory (NVRAM) which contains the site specific set-ups. Note, the software applications information may be keys (passwords) which control the type or number of software applications permitted (via a prepaid license) to be run onportable monitors 102.NVRAM 601 is preferably embodied as a removable EEPROM inPSN 240. Also shown are apower supply 602 and adevice interface 603.
Monitor 102 is illustrated as the device connected todocking station platform 110.Monitor 102 also includes a non-volatile memory (NVRAM) which contains default set-up information provided by the manufacturer and a battery backed-up memory (BRAM) 612 which contains the current set-up information (monitor configurations and software licenses used by the monitor via its CPU 614). Also shown as part ofmonitor 102 is abattery 616, apower supply 618, auser interface 620 and adocking station interface 622 for interfacing withdevice interface 603 indocking station 111.
FIG. 7a-7d illustrate flow charts useful for understanding the operation of the portable monitor reconfiguration system. As shown in FIG. 7a the system works as a continuous loop of event identification and processing. Thesteady state condition 702 is where amonitor 102 is connected to adocking station 111 or when it is disconnected and running on battery power. Basically, there are threedifferent loops 704, 706, and 708, individually initiated upon detection of one of the following events: 1. just connected; 2. just disconnected; and 3. user request to change configuration. Based upon which event is detected, the flow charts of FIGS. 7b, 7c or 7d are implemented.
FIG. 7b illustrates theprocess connection 704 flow chart. Step 710 asks if the docking station is initialized. If it is not initialized step, 712 initializes the docking station by copying the default set-ups from the monitor NVRAM to the docking station NVRAM. IFstep 710 determines that the docking station is initialized, (and also at the conclusion of step 712),step 714 up-loads the set-ups from the docking station to the portable device. This is accomplished by copying the portable device configurations from the docking station NVRAM to the portable monitor BRAM and by copying the software license keys from the docking station NVRAM to the portable monitor BRAM. Next, as illustrated bystep 716, the portable monitor is reconfigured by the data transferred to its RAM's. This entails re-initialization of its software controlled configurations with new configurations and enabling of software applications as specified by the software license keys now stored in its BRAM.
FIG. 7c illustrates the processdisconnection flow chart 706. Step 718 disables access to the docking station. Thereafter, steps 720 and 722 indicate that the portable monitor is directed to then continue to operate using the configuration and software applications whose licenses are stored in its BRAM.
FIG. 7d indicates the process saverequest flow chart 708. Step 724 indicates that upon receiving a process save request, the configurations stored in the portable monitor BRAM are transferred to the docking station NVRAM.
It is understood by one skilled in the art that many variations of the embodiments described herein are contemplated. While the invention has been described in terms of exemplary embodiments, it is contemplated that it may be practiced as outlined above with modifications within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Claims (10)

We claim:
1. A patient monitor system, comprising:
a portable monitor including a signal processor and display adapted for coupling to a plurality of sensors attached to a patient, for continuous operation receiving, processing and displaying patient data signals received from the plurality of sensors, at least one of the processing and displaying operations of the patient data signals by the portable monitor being controllable so as to provide a selected one of a plurality of different patient data signal analyses or a selected one of a plurality of different patient data signal display operations, respectively;
a communication network distributed over at least two geographically separate patient monitoring areas; and
at least two docking stations, with at least one docking station being located in each of said at least two patient monitoring areas and connected to one another for transmission of patient data therebetween via said communication network;
wherein each docking station comprises:
means for detachably coupling the portable monitor to the docking station;
first transfer means for transferring patient data between the portable monitor and the docking station when the portable monitor is coupled to the docking station; and
second transfer means for transferring monitor set-up information to the portable monitor from the docking station when the portable monitor is coupled to the docking station, said monitor set-up information controlling at least one of the patient data signal processing operation or the patient data signal displaying operation of the portable monitor so as to cause said portable monitor to provide a selected one of a plurality of different patient data signal analyses or a selected one of a plurality of different patient data signal display operations, respectively.
2. The system of claim 1, wherein second transfer means transfers said set-up information from said docking station to said portable monitor upon initial coupling of said portable monitor to said docking station.
3. The system of claim 2, wherein second transfer means automatically transfers said set-up information provided from said docking station to said portable monitor upon initial coupling of said portable monitor to said docking station.
4. The system of claim 1, wherein each docking station includes a non-volatile memory for storing area specific set-up information which is specific to the patient monitoring area in which the docking station is physically located, said non-volatile memory being coupled to said second transfer means.
5. The system of claim 4, wherein said set-up information stored in said memory comprises monitor configuration information, including display controls, and, software application information enabling said monitor to process said patient data signals with a specific software application.
6. The system of claim 4, wherein said non-volatile memory comprises a removable electrically-erasable, programmable, read only memory (EEPROM) loaded with said area specific set-up information.
7. The system of claim 6, wherein said portable monitor also includes a battery-backed-up memory (BRAM) for storing set-up information currently used by the portable monitor.
8. The system of claim 6, wherein said set-up information stored in said memory comprises monitor configuration information, including display controls, and, software application information enabling said monitor to process said patient data signals with a specific software application.
9. The system of claim 1, wherein said portable monitor includes a non-volatile memory for storing default monitor information.
10. The system of claim 9, wherein said set-up information stored in said memory comprises monitor default configuration information, including default display controls, and, default software application information enabling said monitor to process said patient data signals with a specific software application in the event that said docking station does not transfer said set-up information to said monitor.
