UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
GEORGE COOKE, OF PHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVANIA.
PROTECTIVE CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,092, dated June 2, 1896.
Application filed April 15 1 896.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE (JOOKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Protective Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my present invention is to provide a compact, reliable, convenient, and comparatively inexpensive de vice or tool for expeditiously and safely cutting delicate, costly, and other fabrics or tissues into any required shapes in such manner that they are held quite flat in respect to the blade and are thereby prevented from being crinkled, damaged, or otherwise defaced.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawin gs, forming part hereof, and in which Figure l'is a perspective View of a cutter Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the under side thereof. Fig. is a detached view of the blade, showing a blunt under face and a sharp inclined upper edge. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a spring-finger slotted for the passage of the blade through it, and Figs. 5 and 6 are views illustrative of the mode of operation of a cutter embodying features of my invention.
In the drawings, a is a handle, I) a blade, and c a spring-finger. The blade and springfinger are secured to and project from one end of the handle. The blade is wedge-shaped and is provided with a blunt under face 1) and with an inclined sharp upper edge b adapted to pass under and cut the material, fabric, or tissue being operated upon. The springfinger is slotted, as at c, for the passage of the under face and portions of the blade adjacent to it. The arms a and c of the spring-. finger are disposed on opposite sides of the blade and between the under face I) and cutting edge b and this spring-finger extends,
Serial No. 587,606. (No model.)
as at 0 around the point of the blade and is adapted by reason of its springiness to yield and pass over the material, fabric, or tissue being operated on to press it down onto the inclined cutting edge 19 and also to hold it flat.
In use one or a number of sheets of material, as d, is placed upon a suitable support and the operatorpresses the point of the blade through it or them and then advances the tool in the required direction or directions, with the result that the inclined edge I) of the blade passes under and the spring-finger 0 passes over the material being operated upon. The spring-finger serves to keep the material being operated upon flat and to hold it down onto the cutting edge. The advantages derived are numerous, and among them I may mention that the cut edges of the material are quite fiat and free from crinkles and that the material itself may not become folded, drawn, or 0th erwise disarranged, so that Waste and miscuts are avoided.
Having thus describeduthe nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A protective cutter comprising the combination of, a handle carrying at one of its ends a blade having a blunt face and an inclined sharp upper edge adapted to pass under the material to be out, and aspring-finger rigidly secured to the handle and slotted for the passage of the blade and having its arms disposed on opposite sides thereof and located between the blunt and sharp edges and adapted to yield and pass over the material to be cut and hold the same flat, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
GEORGE COOKE.
In presence of- E. KRAMER, W. T. HEssERr.
