(No Model.)
I'. T. WALTON. BoNlJI/NG JACK.
JM s
NITE
STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BONDINGJACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,332, dated October 2,2, 1895. Application iiled July 11, 1895- Serinl No. 555,683. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREEMAN T. WALroN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Bonding-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, lsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bonding jacks or tools for holding the bonds which connect the rails of electric railroads while the bonds are being secured to the rail.
It consists in a suitable rod having on one end an adjustable section and on the other end a head constructed in such manner as to receive and hold the end of a bond while it is being set in the rail.
It further consists in certain details of oonstruction, which will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically claimed.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of this application, Figure lis an elevation, partly in section, of one end of myimproved jack. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the other end of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a rail, one end of a bond, and the holding end of the bonding-jack. Figr-l isa sectional View showing bond and jack in position, and Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the bushing in the head of the bonding-jack.
Same letters refer to like parts.
In said drawings, A represents a suitable rod having a thread B, and C a nut adapted to turn thereon, whereby the length of the rod may be adjusted. In the end of said nut is a steel holding-point D, and adapted to slide in a hole E in said nut is a hand-lever F. Swiveled in the other end of said rod is a head G, held in place by a split pin H, passing through said rod and into a groove I in the swivel-link J. In the end of the head is a slot K, the outer portion of which is wider than the inner portion, thus forming a shoulder on each side to receive the enlarged end of the bond or a removable slotted bushing L,
. adapted to receive said enlarged end, the inner part of the socket being adapted to receive the bent portion of the bond. The bushing has a shoulder-N to hold it in position in the head. The bond has its end bent at right angles to its length and its extremity enlarged, forming a shoulder O. The enlarged end P is inserted in the web Q of a rail. In said end is a socket R, in the sides of which are slits S, said socket being adapted to receive and permanently retain an expanding-plug T. v
The operation of my improved bondingjack is as follows: The endof the bond is inserted through the hole in the web of the rail. The foot of the jack is then placed against the web of the opposite rail. The head of the jack is then placed over the end of the bond, the bushing resting on the shoulder of the bond and the socket in the jack receiving the bent portion of the bond, and the adjusting-nut, by means of lever F, is turned until the head is firmly pressed against the shoulder of the bond, the swiveled head remaining stationary. The expandingplug is then driven into the socket, the end of the bond being firmly held by the jack,
thereby making a perfect joint between the bond and the rail, so that the electricity is conducted from one rail over to the adjacent rail. Its advantages are that it holds the bond in position firmly while the expandingplug is being inserted. It is quickly placed in position and does not have to be held in place by one person while another inserts the plug.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim- 1. A bonding jack comprising a rod having a thread upon one end an adjusting nut thereon and a head swiveled to the other end of said rod, a slot in the end thereof, the outer portion of which is wider than the inner portion, all being designed to receive and securely hold the bond while the expanding plug is being inserted therein, substantially* as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A bonding jack, comprising a rod having a thread upon one end, an adjusting nut thereon, a slotted head swiveled to the rod In testimony whereof I affix my signature, and adapted to hold a bond, e bushing L, to in presence of two Witnesses, this 8th day of bear against an enlarged part of a so'cketsed July, 1895.
bond, all designed to securely hold the bond FREEMAN T. WALTON. 5 While an expanding plug is being inserted Witnesses:
therein, substantially as and for the purposes ELGIN C. VERRILL,
set forth. NELLIE WALTON.
