Description

(No ModeL).
-GQDUNSTAN -S'IENCH TRAP.
PATENT Enron.
GEORGE DUNsTAN, OE LOEAIN, OHIO.
STENCH-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,617, dated July 30, 1895. Application tiled March 9, 1894. Serial No. 503,030. v(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE DUNSTAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented'a new and useful Stench-Trap, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stench-traps, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient trap for sewers, sinks, and the like, to avoid the lodging of waste therein and prevent the escape of efiluvia.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the parts or members thereof may be readily disconnected for the purpose of cleaning without break-ing plumbers joints and arrange the parts to form a water-seal at each joint.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In. the drawings, Figure l is a vertical central section of a trap embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the iigures of the drawings.
l designates a casing of bowl shape, provided at its upper edge with a lateral flange 2'and at its lower end with an exteriorlythreaded thimble 8, adapted to be screwed into the end of a sewer or waste pipe. 'This casing is provided at its. upper edge, below the plane of the lateral flange 2, with a groove 4, formed by an inwardly-extending flange 5 and an upturned edge or rim 6.
7 represents a dat perforated or grated cap, provided at its periphery with an integral depending iiange 8, which fits in the groove 4 and forms a water-seal, and also. provided within said flange with an integral inverted trunco-conical conductor-neck 9, having at its lower end an opening approximately equal with the bore of thethimble 3.
The casing is provided upon its inner sides with the spaced ribs lO, preferably three in number, the inner compoundly-curved edges of which are convergent toward their lower ends, and between these ribs and supported thereby is arranged a sealing-bowl ll, having an outwardly-flared upper edge, as shown at l2, a raised orconical center 14, and a han dle 15 connectedv to this raised center and extending upward above the plane of the upper edge ofthe bowl.
The lower edge of the inverted trunco-conical neck extends below the plane ofthe upper edge of the bowl ll, thus 'forming a water-seal and at the same time providing means for the ready exit of the contents.
All sharp angles are avoided `in the construction of the various parts of the trap Po prevent the lodging of matter therein, and while effective water-seals are provided the passage through the Vtrap is comparatively unobstructed.
It will be seen, furthermore, that the various parts of the trap are removable, whereby, when necessary, they may be detached and cleaned, or, if broken, replaced.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, l claim- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein shown and described stench trap, comprising a bowl-shaped casing having its lower end contracted to be fitted into a sewer or waste pipe, and having an interior annu-4 lar groove 4 at its top, and havingribs 10 integral with and projecting from its inner side and compoundly curved on their inner edges, a sealing bowl 1l having imperforate `bottom and sides and removably supported within the casing upon the said ribs, a handle secured centrally to the sealing bowl and extending above the top edge thereof, and a flat perforate cap removably fitted within the upper end of the casing and provided with an integral depending flangel fitting within the said interior groove 4, and having an integral depending inverted trunco conical neck projecting into the sealing bowl below the plane of its upper edge, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE DUNSTAN. Witnesses:
ED. GILLMOEE, JOSEPH MoYLEs.
