(No Model.) v
M. N. GEORGE. DEVICE FRI DOOR BOLTS.
Patented June 11, 1895.
trios.
ATENE DEVICE FOR oooR-BoL-rs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,911, dated J' unel 1, 1895. Application tied January 14.1895. serai No. 534.776. (No man.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARION NEWTON GEORGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Irondale, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Door-Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a t' ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in a device to operate or unbolt the bolts of a door; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a simple and cheap operating device for bolts on the inside of a door the devicehavinga spool provided with a removable key to operate the bolts from the outside, and second, to provide a door bolt operating de vice having a frame with a spool journaled therein, the device attached to the inside of the door, the key-hole in the spool opposite the joint between the doors and the bolt of the lock, the lock bolt when locked, passing in front of the spool key-hole to prevent the insertion of a key from the outside to Withdraw the bolts. I attain these-objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying draw- Figure l is a verticalinside view of double doors having top and bottom bolts attached, with my device attached to the bolts on the locking side of the door. Fig. 2 is a vertical edge vievs1 of the locking-door, giving a side view of the device attached thereto. Fig 3 is an lenlarged detail plan view of the spoolframe. Fig. et is a vertical sectional view of the same through the center of the spool. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical detail sectional view through the center of one of the spring-bolts.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through.- out the several views.
The doors A A are the usual form of double doors, used in stores and for other like purposes. The doors are provided with the usual'top and bottom bolts B. B, attached to the door A that is closed rst, the last closing door A being provided with the usual lock C, the lock attached to the door, and when locked securing the door in the usual manner.
The frame D of my door bolt operating device,is made of malleable iron, or of any suitable sheet metal if desired. The frame is formed as shown to straddle the lock and is provided at the ends with screw holes, to attach the frameto thel door. An upright eX- tension is formed on one side of the frame, the extension having a lip turned at right angles to extend over the main part of the frame and stand parallel thereto. A metallic spool E is journaled in the frame as shown. One
end of the -spool is journaled in av bearing formed in the main part of the frame. The opposite end of the spool is journaled iu a bearing formed in the overhanging lip. The spool is provided with a knob E attached to the inner end, the knob forming a handle, by whichthe spool can be rotated or turned on tne inside of the doors, a key G being provided to tit a key hole in the opposite end of the spool, to turn the spool from the outside of the doors.
Spring bolts H. H are attached to the top and bottom of the doorl A in the usual manner, the bolts when the door is closed engaging in keepers at the top and bottom of the door frame. The bolts can be of any of the casing, to press the point of the bolt out, an eye or like device being provided on the inner end of thebolt, to attach a cord or chain thereto, to Withdraw the bolts from the keepers. A cord or chain I is attached to the bolts H. H in any suitable manner. The cord or chain is rove through an aperture J formed in the spool E, before attaching the end s of the cord or chain to the bolts.
The spool carrying frame is attached to the inside of the door, the frame straddling the lock to bring the key-hole formed in the center of the spool, alittle outside the face of the lock and over the joint between the doors, and the lock and keeper. The key stem is formed slim and straight and without a head. If the spaceA between the doors, and the lock and keeper is sufficient to admit the key stern, the key can be inserted in the joint between the doors ton reach the spool. If the space is not sufficient, a slight concave recess can be filed in the door and keeper, to admit the key to the spool, from the outside of the doors.
To operate the device when attached to a door as shown, if the door is closed, the bolts will engage the keepers top and bottom by the Vusual forms having a spring inclosed in the ICO action of the springs. To open from the inside thev knob F is turned by the hand. The turning.r of the knob winding the cord or chain in opposite directions on the spool withdraws the bolts. If the door is closed and locked from the outside, the lock bolt bengon the same line as the key hole to the device, the bolt closes the aperture and prevents the insertion of a key to turn the spool.` To open the door the lock must be first unlocked to draw the bolt back from interference with the keyhole to the spool. The-key G canthentbe inserted, to turn the spooland Withdraw the bolts to open the door.l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
covering the key hole to the spool, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Inttestimony whereof I affix my signature `in presence of two witnesses.
MARION NEWTON GEORGE. Witnesses:
