To allwhom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. DALY, of the city of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Jointer-Guards, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to means for protecting workmen from injury by the rapidly re- Volving cutters of jointing machines, which machines are entirely open at the top with the cutters exposed and consequently dangerous.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, adjustable, automatic and absolutely safe guard for j ointers and one which will entirely cover the cutters or knives.

My invention consists in general in the construction and combinations hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims and will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspecification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a jointing machine provided with a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view thereof. Fig. 8 is a side elevation taken from Fig. 2.

In the drawings, I have shown a complete jointer, the tables 2 and 3, theguide 4 and the revolving cutters 5 of which are all of the ordinary construction, means being provided for elevating one or both tables, and the table 2 being ordinarily somewhat higher than the other. The revolving cutter is arranged upon anarbor 6, and the knives as they revolve project upward flush with the surface of the table 2 and extend clear across the end thereof. When themovable guide 4 is in the position shown in the drawings almost the entire cutter is exposed and a person using the machine is very apt to bestruck by the knives while holding the stick or board close on the table and against theguide 4. To prevent this I provide a large thin disk orwheel 7 preferably made of wood, and preferably thinner than any board commonly worked on the j ointer so that the wheel will not interfere with the hands of the person feeding the machine.

The wheel is of nearly if not quite the width of the machine and 1 covers the entire cutter, when the machine is not in use. The wheel is arranged upon a short stud shaft orbolt 8, which is fixed in the end of the long swinging arm 9, at the other end of which is a downwardly projecting shaft orstud 10 having bearing in the box 11, adj ustably secured to the jointer by any suitable means. It is obvious that the precise construction shown and described may be modified somewhat without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not confine myself strictly thereto.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, of the jointer, and the revolving cutters thereof, with the guide, a large disk arranged to fully cover said outter,,and a swinging arm carrying said disk and adapted to swing outwardly, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with the bed and the revolving cutters, of thelarge disk 7 adapted to fully cover said cutter and having the coni-' cal lower side, the swinging arm 9, whereon said disk is journaled, an adjustable block whereon said arm is pivoted, and a light spring connected with the arm for normally holding said disk over said cutter, substantially as described.
