SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,328, dated November 7, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. LoYD, of Hiawatha, in the county of Brown and State ofKansas, have invented a new and Improved Shoe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in. shoes, and the object of my invention is to produce a shoe which may be made either in the form of an overshoe, a sandal, or in the usual style; which may be worn over another shoe, or without any shoe, which is especially adapted for use as an ice creeper, as it prevents a person from slipping in any direction, which also is adapted for use upon rough places or where it is necessary to get a good foothold, as for instance, by runners in racing, and which may be very cheaply made and easily applied to the foot.

To this end, my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

Figure l is a longitudinal section of a shoe embodying my invention, and Fig. 2is an inverted plan of the same. g

The shoe is provided with a metal sole 10, which is shaped substantially like an ordinary shoe sole, having a spring shank l1, pressed upward in the right place and having at its rear end a metal counter 12, which is pressed out of the same piece as the sole, and aflange 13 around the toe and ball of the sole. I At the toe of the shoe is aflexible toepiece 14, which is fastened by any suitable means to theflange 13, and which is adapted to receive the toe of the foot, while inside the counter 12 is a lining 15, also of flexible material and adapted to receive the heel, and to be easy to the same, or if the shoe is worn over another shoe, to prevent injury to the inner shoe.

The shoe is provided with astrap 16, which is adapted to extend over the instep in the same manner as a skate strap, and to buckle around the instep, and the form of shoe described is like a sandal, being a skeleton shoe.

Beneath the sole 10 and beneath the ball of the shoe, is aplate 17, which is provided with aflange 18 extending around its edge, and having serrated teeth thereon, which are adapted to embed themselves in the ground or ice and prevent the shoe from slipping. Theplate 17 is of the same general shape as the forward portion of the sole, and it is provided withcross bars 19, having serratedflanges 20, which are ofthe same height as theflanges 18, and it will be observed that the arrangement of theserrated flanges 18 and 20 is such that the teeth of the flanges will press in divers directions and prevent the shoe from slipping in any way. The shoe is provided with a'heel-plate 21, whichis substantially like theplate 17 it corresponding to the contour of the heel, and having aserrated edge flange 22, andcross flanges 23, which are also serrated.

As illustrated, theplates 17 and 21 are fastened to the sole 10, but it will be understood that these plates may be formed integrally with the sole 10 if desired, without affecting the principle of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A shoe comprising a sole provided with a. spring shank 11 aflange 13 around the marginal edge in front of the shank, a counter forming flange in rear of the shank; the whole formed of a single sheet metal plate, the toothed metallic sole and heel plates provided with marginal and transverse serrations, thefabrictoe piece 14 secured to flange 15, the counter lining 15 and thestrap 16, substantially as set forth.
