Description

J. F. OORKER. GRAVITY HELMET.
(No Model.)
No. 500,686. Patented'July 4, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. CORKER, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TERRITORY.
G RAVlTY-H ELM ET.
SPEOIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 500,686, dated July 4, 1893.
Application filed August 10, 1892.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OORKER, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gravity-Helmets, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for aiding persons in carrying the body in an erect position, and consists in the variousmatters hereinafter described andclaimed. It is well known that people who in early years have carried burdens upon their heads, have a more erect carriage than those who have not done so, the law of gravity causing them to hold the body in such a position that the weight shall be supported directly above the feet. With this fact in view, therefore, I have constructed a device by which in a comfortable manner a weight is applied to the head.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate my invention Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 shows the device in position for use. Fig. 3 is a modification, as is also Fig. 4.
In the drawings, A, A, are weighted rims shaped to fit the sides of the head and provided with suitable pads as B to prevent chafing. These rims may be of solid metal, or of tubing of metal or other material as canvas or leather, in which latter case an aperture a may be provided through which shot, sand, or other such substance may be inserted and removed to vary the weight of the device. The
light band C connects the rims, and in order that the size and shape of my device may bein fierial N0. 442,652- (No model.)
a measure varied to conform to different heads, I construct this band in two parts which I hold together by the set screw 0 fastened to one part of the band and slidingin the slot 0' formed in the other part. It will be understood, however, that various other connections between the weights A, A, may-be used as well as various other means for making these connections adjustable.
Fig. 3 shows my device substantially in the shape of a horseshoe so that the weight may be kept from the forehead and at the same time applied to the other parts of the head, and Fig. 4. shows a form of my devicein which is used a band encircling the entire head. These various forms of my invention may be used just as shown in the drawings or they may be placed in hats and worn in this way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A gravity helmet comprising weights adapted to fit upon the head, and suitable connections between said weights; substantially as described.
2. A gravity helmet comprising a set of weights shaped to fit upon the sides of the head, a bar provided with a slot projecting from one weight, and a second bar provided with a set screw adapted to work in said slot, projecting from the other weight; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. CORKER.
Witnesses:
ROBERT WENDT, WILLIA LAPHAM.
