SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,175, da October 1891- Applioation filed June 1, 1891. Serial No. 394,665. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
3e it known that I, WILLIAM A. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the county of WVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet Metal Knobs, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanyrawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the blank from which the base of the knob is made. Fig. 2 represents the crown-section of the knob. Fig. 3 1s an elevation of the completed knob, and Fig. 4 is a vertical central sectional View of the same.

My invention relates to that class of sheetmetal knobs which are formed in two separate parts or sections known as the crown and base; and it consists in certain features of construction, as hereinafter described, by which I secure certain advantagesin the completed knob. These features of construction relate, particularly, to the base of the knob and to the method of uniting the crown and base.
The blank from which the base of the knob is formed is represented in outline in Fig. 1 and has a solid central section A, including that portion of the blank bounded by the circular broken line A, and radialwings A extending outwardly from said central solid section, each of said wings being provided with projecting ears A It is best to make these ears semicircular in form for a reason hereinafter set forth. The edge of the blank between the, ears A of each adjacent pair of wings A is preferably bounded by a single curved line A The blank is formed'by the action of suitable punches and dies into the base-section of a knob of the desired form such, for instance, as is represented at B, Fig. 3, and in central sectional View in Fig. 4. The bottom or smaller endof the base B is drawn into its proper shape from the solid central section A of the blank. The wings A are pressed into the circular flaring shape forming the upper and larger portion of the base B, bringing the opposing edges 13 of the cars A into contact, leaving an opening B below the cars A and the opening B above the ears A and at the edge of the base The opening B is preferably bounded at its sides by vertical and parallel lines A The crown-section represented in Fig. 2 is provided with a flange G which is preferably cut apart at C O, forming slitsinclosing the section 0 which is turned into the opening 13 with the edges-of the section 0 abutting against the edges A of the opening B thereby preventing the rotation of the crown-section 0 upon the base-section B when the knob is turned for the purpose of screwingit upon an attaching screw or bolt. The ears A are preferably semicircular inform, so that in case one of the radial wings should be drawn slightly more than an adjacent wing in the operation of forming the base, thereby bringing the projecting ear upon one wing in a higher plane than the projecting ear upon its ad acent wing, the irregularity will not be so clearly disclosed by the abutting edges of the opposing ears.
Instead of turning the section G into the opening B the flange G can be bent or inden'ted at the opening B so as to prevent the rotationof the crown upon the base. The object of the projecting ears A is to provide abutting edges and prevent the approach of the wings toward each other and the base of the knob from being collapsed by a pressure applied upon the outside of the wings. The openings provided at the upper edge of the base also render the edge of the base slightly elastic, allowing it to yield as pressure is applied in turning the edge 0 of the crown-section over the edge of the base-section, and as the pressure is removed from the flanged edge 0 after the completion of the knob the elasticity of the edge of the base-section will expand the ends of the wings firmly against the inner side of the flanged edge 0 securing a tight fit between the edge 0 and the edge of the base-section inclosed therein, and this result is secured independently of the indentation ofthe flanged edge 0 into the openings formed in the edge of the base-section.
The openings B are formed between the abutting edges of the projecting ears A and the smaller end or bottom of the base, thereby providing means for ventilating the knob near the smaller orbottom end of the base by which it is attached to the stove or furnace door, where the heat is greatest, and it also allows the surplus stock to expand in the process of shaping the lower or smaller section of the giasekfrom the central solid section of the What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. In a sheet-metal knob, the combination of a base-section formed from a blank provided with radial wings, said wings having laterally-proj ectin g and abutting ears, whereby said Wings are prevented from being collapsed by outside pressure, said base-section being provided with openings at its edge, and a crown-section provided with a flanged edge and having a portion of said flanged edge enterlng said openings, whereby the rotation of said crown-sectionon said base is prevented, and said base-section having holes below said projecting and abutting ears by which the knob is ventilated, all substantially as described.
2. In a-sheet-lnetal knob, the combination of a base-section formed from a blank provided with radially-proj ectin g wings and having openings or holes formed in its sides between saidwings and having abutting edges between said holes-or openings, and the edge of said base-section having openings between said wings at the edge of said base-section, whereby said Wings are held from collapsing under pressure andwhereby the edge of said base-section is rendered slight-1y elastic, and
a crown-section having a flanged edge turned over t-he'edge of said base-section, forming the completed knob, substantially as described.
3. In a sheet-metal knob, the combination of a base-section provided with openings at its edge and a crown-section provided with the WILLIAM A. TURNER. Witnesses:
