Description

(No Model.)
J. O. PALMER.
PEN HOLDER.
No. 433,303. Patented July 29, 1890.
WITNESSES A TTOHNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA C. PALMER, OF LANHAM, TEXAS.
PEN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,303, dated. July 29, 1890.
Application filed February 18, 1890. Serial No. 340,888. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSHUA O. PALMER, of Lanham, in the county of Hamilton and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Pen-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in pen-holders; and the object of my invention is to provide a pen-holder of simple construction that may be easily held between the fingers without cramping the same, that will hold the pen in such a position in relation to the eye as to enable the writer to write well, and that will be adapted to hands of various sizes.
To this end my invention consists of a curved fiat holder having a shank projecting from the end thereof, to which a pen may be attached, said shank being nearly parallel with the straight portion of the holder, and in line with the eye when held in position for Writing.
This construction will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed outinthe claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the penholder in position in the band; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the same detached from the hand; Fig. 3, aplan view of the same; Fig. 4, a broken side elevation of the same, and Fig. 5 an end view with the pen removed.
Theholderis made, preferably, of wood, and is provided with a fiat handle A, having thinned or rounded edges, said handle being laterally curved and thickened at its lower end from about the point Cl, and terminating in a projecting rounded shank B, which is very nearly parallel with the straight portion of the handle. The shank B is provided with a ferrule C, which fits closely thereon, and the top of the shank is provided with a recess 1), between the shank and the ferrule, into which a pen (I is placed when the pen-holder is to be used. The recess 1) should be shaped to fit an ordinary pen, so that the pen will rest firmly therein. The lower end of the handle A is by a left-handed person.
also provided with a recess c, which is parallel with the shank B, and affords room for the edge of the pen (Z. It will be seen that the recess 1) extends the entire length of the shank B and ferrule C, so that if a pen should be broken off in the holder it may be pushed out in either direction. The holder is rounded up from the recess 6, thus practically forming an extension of the recess 1), so that the pen will be firmly held in position. If desired, the opposite side of the shank B and handle A may be recessed, and the holder may be used The curve from the shank B to the point a of thehandle should be such as to fit the curve of the fingers and bring the shank and pen in line with the eye. The pen will'thus bear firmly and squarely upon the paper, and the strokes of the pen may be made with great precision and ease.
The pen-holder, having a fiat handle A, fits nicely between the fingers, and maybe used a long time without tiring or cramping the hand. It may also be laid upon the paper, and, being flat and curved, will hold the pen in elevated position and prevent it from soiling the paper.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A pen-holder consisting, essentially, of a fiat handle curved laterally at its lower end and having said lower end provided with a forwardl y-proj ectin g shank adapted to receive a pen. substantially as described.
2. A pen-holder having a fiat-sided curved handle with thinned or rounded edges, the
lower end of said handle being thickened, as
shown, and provided with a forwardly-projecting shank and ferrule adapted to receive and hold a pen, substantially as described.
3. A pen-holder consisting, essentially, of a fiat curved handle A, thickened at the lower end, as shown, and having a recess etherein, and a shank B, projecting from the lower end of said handle and provided with a recess b and ferrule C, substantially as described.
JOSHUA O. PALMER.
