Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL F. ALLEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEED-WATER HEATRS FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. L] [,591 dated February 1li, 1864.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL F. ALLEN, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed- Vater Heaters for Locomotives; and I hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letof the heater Q, with compound pipes R andexhaustpipes T attached. Fig. 3 is a side View ofeXhaust-pipe, with the opening through which the deiiecting tongue projects.
A in Fig. l represents the boiler, and Q the heater placed beneath A and at right angles to it. The heater Q is secure] y fastened to the sides of frame F by means of the lugged heads E E. By this arrangement the heater is made to answer as abraee, and thus give stability to the frame F. The lugged heads E are held together by longitudinal b'olts I), which can be easily removed when it becomes necessary to repair or cleanse the heater Q.
Rrepresents the compound pipes, which connect the heater Q with the exhaust-pipes T. The oiiice of pipes R is to convey a sufficiency of steam into heater Q to raise the water in Q to the desired temperature. The pipes T are fastened together by means ot` the yoke and setscrews X, so that one pipe can he removed without deranging the other.
A2 represents a valve for regulating the eX- haust steam which enters Q through the coinpound pipes R. The pipes R and T are so constructed and arranged that the pressure of steam in heater Q will be equal to that in pipes T. This result is chietly attained by the use of the deiiecting tubular tongue C, which admits as much steam into pipes R as is necessary to preserve the equilibrium above stated, and discharges the remainder through pipes T.
B2 represents the plunger, which is designed to prevent any hard substance that may enter through pipes T from striking against and injuring the iiues I, Fig. 2. To effect this object the end of the plunger B2 is closed and the sides open for the escape of the steam.
H in Fig. l represents the pipe through which the cold water is forced into the heater Q, and L the pipe through which hot water enters the boiler A; and S represents the escapepipe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination of the compound pipes R, the exhaust-pipes T, the regulating-valve A2, the deiiect'ing-tongues C, the yokes X, and the heater Q, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereby affix my signaturein the presence of two witnesses. 4
