Description

(No Model.)
J. J. KUYKENDALL.
GOAL BIN OR GOAL CABINET.
No. 413,068. Patented Oct. 15, 1889.
WfZ/VESSES NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH J. KUYKENDALL, OF CAIRO, ILLINOIS.
COAL BIN OR COAL-CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,068, dated October 15, 1889'.
Application filed April 2, 1889. $erial No. 305,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH J. KUYKEN- DALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cairo, in the county of Alexander and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Bins or Coal-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in coal-bins, the object of which is to provide a new and useful cabinet for containing coal and other articles in such a manner as to produce a neat and cleanly article of furniture for the fireside that will be in keeping with elegant surroundings. This result is reached by means of the device hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are to be considered a part hereof, in which similar letters refer to corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective front view showing the doors open. Fig. 2 is a perpendicular cross-section on a line with 0c 00.
The body proper of my invention (indicated by A) consists, essentially, of a rectangular box provided on its front with a small door a, and provided with a hinged top a. On the inside of this box I provide a rearwardly-inclined bottom B, which occupies a position with the body of the box at an angle of forty-five degrees, (more or less,) and extends from the front side of such box to within two feet (more or less) of the rear of same. This inclined bottom B is to be firmly secured to the sides of the box A, and is intended to support the coal or other contents. The intervening space between the rear end of bottom B and the rear side of the box is to be occupied by a sliding door 0, such door to be supported by cleats c, secured to the sides of the box, so that such door may be easily moved either backward or forward by the lever b.
In Fig. 2 it will be seen that lever 1) consists of a rod of iron so bent near its middle as to produce two right angles, and at the same time leave the ends of such rod to 00- cupy parallel lines with each other. The first angle is to be provided upon each side with journals to engage in the journal box d, such journal-box to be secured to the under side of the inclined bottom B and near its lower end. The other end of lever 79 is to be pivotally connected to the center of door 0. A second rearwardly-inclincd bottom is also provided near the lower part of the box, the upper surface of which presents an inclined plane for easily securing the substance covering this surface, while underneath such bottom E is a space for disposing of the shovel and tongs and other articles of firesidefurniture when not in use.
My invention is used as follows: The coal is placed in the upper compartment of the box through the opening formed by door a, and the outwardly-extending end of lever b is to be raised. By such action the door 0 is withdrawn from its position as part of the upper compartment, thereby permitting the contents to fall upon the second inclined bottom, where it may readily be secured. Areverse action of the lover I) closes the opening thus formed by forcing the door 0 backward into its place as part of the bottom of the upper compartment.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a coal-cabinet, the combination of the rectangular body A, having the rearwardlyinclined bottoms B and E, the sliding door O, supported by cleats c, the lever b, so bent as to form two right angles, and at the same time leaving the ends parallel with each other, and provided on each side of the first bend with journals (Z, and joined by its inner end to the center of the sliding door 0, all as shown, and for the purpose named.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH J. KUYKENDALL.
