EMMET C. FAIN, OF GRANBURY, TEXAS.
RACK FOR DISPLAYING DRY GOODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,131, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed January 3, 1889. Serial No. 295,279. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMMET C. FAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granbury, in the county of Hood and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Racks for Displaying Dry Goods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in racks for displaying dry goods; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set fort-h hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display-rack embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view Figs. 3, 4., and 5 are detail views.
A represents a case or cabinet, which comprises the vertical end boards B, the top 0, connecting the same, the bottom board D, and the supporting-feet E. The latter are provided with casters or rollers, by means of which the case or cabinet may be readily moved about.
F represents a pair of drop-counters,which are hinged to opposite sides of the board D. The sides of the case or cabinet are open, and the end boards thereof are connected together at suitable intervals by pairs of longitudinal rods G, arranged in different horizontal plan es.
H represents supporting-arms, which are made of suitable metal, and are of the form shown, and provided at their inner ends with hooks I, and have semi-cylindrical sockets K at their outer ends. One pair of the said arms are arranged on each pair of the bars or rods G, with their hooks I engaging the outermost bar and their horizontal arms L resting upon the proximate bar, as shown, whereby the arms H are caused to project beyond the sides of the case or cabinet.
Dress goods, ginghams, flannels, waterproofs, and similar materials are arranged in bolts, and are wound upon boards M for the market. In order to adapt such dress-goods to be displayed by my improved rack, I provide trunnions N, which are formed of cylindrical tubes, and to the inner ends of said trunnions are secured clamping-arms O,which are adapted to be inserted in theends of the ner the trunnions may be attached to the bolts and the latter then lifted between the arms H and their trunnions caused to lie in the semi-cylindricalsockets K of said arms, so as to support the bolts of cloth and adapt the same to revolve freely when measuring off cloth therefrom.
Oalicoes, cottons, and other light fabrics are usually supplied to the market in bolts having yard-wide folds, and in order to display such fabricslprovide bearings M with spring clamping-arms O, to engage the ends of the bolts and support the same on the arms I-I. Such fabrics may only be displayed by the rack, and have to be taken from the arms and placed on one of the counters to be measured.
R represents a pair of arms, which are adapted to be used in connection with one pair of the arms H and have their outer ends bent to form plait-like recesses S.
T represents a guide, which is made of a single piece of rod or wire of suitable length, bent to form an open link, with its sides in close proximity to each other. The ends of the guide are bent at right angles to form armsU,whieh engage the ends of the case or cabinet, and the said guides are supported in proximity to the bolt of material with which it is designed to operate by inserting it in two of the aligned notches S of the arms R. The end of the cloth unreeled from the bolt is passed between the sides of the guide, and the same is supported in positionto be advan tageously displayed by a yoke V, substantially in the form of an extended letterU, the arms of the same being provided with hooks WV at their inner ends, which engage studs X, that project from the ends of the case or cabinet, and said arms resting on similar studs, as shown. The guide prevents the bolt of cloth from rotating too rapidly when measuring oif cloth therefrom, and the yoke forms a straightedge, on which the cloth may be cut as it is sold, and also holds the cloth out of contact with bolts which are supported in lower planes.
The supporting-arms H may be adjusted longitudinally on the rods G to enc ble them to support goods of any width.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, in a rack for displaying dry goods, of the supporting-rods G, ar-
ranged in pairs, the arms lI, adapted to bear on the said rods and having the hooks I at the inner ends to engage the same, and provided, further, with the sockets 0r bearings K in their outer ends, and the trunnions N,ha\*- ing the clamps or arms adapted to engage the ends of a belt of cloth, said trunnions being adapted to engage the bearings of the supporting-arms, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. In a rack for displaying dry goods, the trunnion having the arms or clamps at its inner end to engage the bolt of cloth, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
3. In a rack for displaying dry goods, the trunnions having the spring-arms at their inner ends, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
frame, and the yoke V, with arms bearing on and having the hooks IV to engage said studs, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
(5. I11 a rack for displaying dry goods, the case, cabinet, or frame having the longitudinal rods Gavith the supporting-arms attached to and adjustable on said rods, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
7; The case, cabinet, or frame having the longitudinal rods G, the supporting-arms attached to said rods, and the trunnions adapted to be attached to the ends of bolts of cloth and to be journaled in the supportingarms, substantially as described.
8. In a rack for displaying dry goods, the detachable trunnion for abolt of cloth, in combination with a rack, frame, or cabinet having arms provided with bearin gs for said trunnions, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMME'l C. FAIN.
