qvitmeooeo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. GRIFFIN, OE ABINGDON, VIRGINIA.
BLANK FOR WASHERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,538, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed February 29, 1888. Serial No. 265,738. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GRIFFIN, of Abingdon, in the county of \Vashington and State of Virginia, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Dies and the Product of the Same; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact-description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention has relation to an improved form of blank, preferably produced by apeculiar-shaped die or stamp, as more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the die preferably employed in forming the herein-de scribed blanks. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the bottom or cutting part being broken away; and Fig. 3 is aplan view of the blank as cut out by the die.
In the drawings, the reference-letter A indicates the stock of a die, which is provided upon its face with a slot or groove, B, to form the body portion of theblank This groove can be of a rectangular or circular shape to form the body portion of the product of corresponding circular or rectangular shape. A slot, E, extends transversely across the face of the die from one side of the slot B, across the central portion and beyond the opposite side of the slot B, the ends of said slot extending within a short distance of each other, and the cross or transverse slot extends between said ends, leaving the bridges e e between the opposite ends of the slot-body portion of the product and the sides of the tongue-forming slot for the purpose of separating the tongue and ends of the body portion of the blank, as shown in the blank in Fig. 3.
It will be readily seen from the foregoing description that the slot B will form the body portion of the blank, which is provided with the free ends, and the cross-slot will form the tongue of the blank, which is formed integral with the inner edge of one side of the body portion of the blank and extends across the central opening of the same, and preferably through the space between the ends of the body portion and a suitable distance beyond the outer edge of the same.
The die is shown and described herein merely to illustrate a manner of forming the blank which constitutes the basis of the present application; and I wish it understood that I do not limit myself to any peculiar apparatus for or method of forming said blank, as I claim the blank per se and independent of the means or process by which it is manufactured. Ialso wish it understood that in the present application I do not claim the die herein shown and described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The blank, as the product of the hereindescribed die, consisting of a body portion provided with free ends, and a tongue formed integral with the body and extending across the central opening of the'same, as set forth.
2. The blank, as the product of the hereindescribed die, consisting of a body portion provided with free ends, and a tongue formed integral with and extending from the inner edge of the body portion across its central opening and through and a suitable distance beyond the opening between the free ends of the same, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE I-I. GRIFFIN.
itnesses:
CHAS M. WERLE, JULIUS SOLGER.
