S. M. ASHBY.
SPONGE AND SLATE PENCIL HOLDER No. 893,496. Patented Nov. 27, 1888.
'nmmnmmrw M niTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH M. ASHBY, OF CASSOPOLIS, MICHIGAN.
SPONGE AND SLATE-PENCIL HOLDER.
sPECIP ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,496. dated November 27, 1888,
Application filed July 6, IBFB.
To all whont it 772,117 concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH M. ASHBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gassopolis, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful linprovement in Combined Sponge and Slate- Pencil Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined sponge and slate-pencil holder designed especially for use in school; and it consists in the construe tion and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective View of a combined sponge and pen cil holder embodying the invention, with the sponge and pencil in place and attached to a suitable point of a desk. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of the holder with the sponge and pencil removed, and Fig. 3 a vertical crosssection.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a cylindrical bottomless receptacle or cup, having preferably the circumferential heads a, and the bar 13 standing diametrically across its open bottom.
C G are arms formed by bending the strip of metal,of which said bar forms part, vcrtically downward, and I) is a horizontal bar formed by bending said strip rearward from thelower end of the front arm C. The projection (Z of said bar, behind the rear arm 0, is provided with a perforation, (7., through. which the device can be fastened to the desk by a screw or a tack. Thus thcbars II) and D and the arms (J O can all be formed of one strip of metal by bending the same three times at right angles on itself.
E is a semi-cylindrical strip of metal secured transversely to the lower end of the front arm 0, with its concavity upward and forming the pencil holder, the cylindrical cup A forming the holder for the sponge, which rests on the bar 1 and is partly held in place by the heads a, though the latter are not ab- Serial No. 279,156.
(No model.)
disorder created, as the sponge can be moistened each morning by a person going from desk to desk with a pail of water, and the pencil can be similarly sharpened with a stone or file. By this means the frequent calling of attention of the teacher by the pupils to sharpen pencils or moisten the sponges may be avoided.
The parts are all preferably of metal, and the receptacle is made bottomless to prevent the water from the sponge from accumulating therein.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. Asponge and pencil holder comprising a cup-shaped receptacle for a sponge and a transverse semi-cylindrical strip, with its convexity upward,to hold a slate or other pencil, substantially as specified.
2. A sponge and pencil holder comprisiuga cylindrical bottomless cup-shaped receptacle for a sponge, having a bar secured across its lower end for the sponge to rest upon, and a semi-cylindrical strip of suitable material secured transversely to an arm depending from said receptacle, with its concavity upward to hold a pencil, substantially as specified.
3. The hcrein-described sponge and pencil holder, comprising the cylindrical bottomless receptacle A,the bar B,crossing the lower end of said receptacle diametrically, the depending arms 0 0, the bar D, having the rearward projection d,provided with the perforation d, the said arms and bars being integral, and the semi-cylindrical strip E,secured transversely,
with its concavity upward,to the lower end of the front arm, 3, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presonce of two witnesses.
SARAH lll. ASHBY.
