The 248/481, 484, 278; 351/56; 350/73 comb may be adjusted both in angle and in relative position to the handle so that handicapped persons [56] References Cited who have restricted arm or hand movement may satis- UNITED STATES PATENTS factorily comb their own hair.
572,540 12/1896 Hardy 350/73 3 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures U.S. Patent Nov. 4, 1975 REHABILITATION COMB SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a hair combing device and particularly to one with an adjustable extension handle for use by a handicapped person. 1
An advantage of this invention is that handicapped persons who have restricted movement of their hands or arms may comb their own hair completely with the use of this invention.
A further advantage of the invention is that it is completely adjustable through a universal joint to compensate for the degree of movement restriction of the handicapped user.
The device consists of a clamping device for holding a conventional hair comb. This clamping device is attached to the handle of the device by means of a universal type joint that may be set in any desired position and then rigidly locked in position by means of a clamping screw. This allows the axis of the handle to be set at virtually any angle in relation to the plane of the comb.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The objects and features of the invention may be understood with reference to the following detailed description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, taken together with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevation view of the device;
FIG. 2 is a cross-section detail of a comb fastened in the clamping device;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the device ready for use; and
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the universal joint.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Turning now r'rescriptively to the drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views, FIG. 1 illustrates the device ready for use, with acomb 11 held securely in theclamp 12 by means of theclamping screw 13.Clamp 12 is attached to thehandle 15 by means of auniversaljoint 14. At the end of thehandle 15 is shapedhand grip 16.
In FIG. 2 thecomb 11 is shown clamped securely in theclamp device 12 by means of theclamp screw 13.
FIGS. 3-4 illustrate theuniversal joint 24 which is formed of twoside plates 20 which are bolted together over the ball shapedend 19 of theclamp device 12 and a ball shapedend 18 of thehandle 15.Side plates 14 are secured in tight frictional fit toball ends 18 and 19 by means of thescrew 17. This type of joint allows the necessary adjustment of a three-dimensional angle betweencomb 11 and handle 15 to suit the particular needs of the handicapped user of the device.
Since obvious changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described herein, such modifications being within the spirit and scope of the invention claimed, it is indicated that all matter contained herein is intended as illustrative and not as limiting in scope.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A hair combing device for use by a handicapped person in the form of a hair comb detachably fastened to a handle, comprising a handle member, one end of which is fastened to a universal joint attached to a clamp member, said clamp member engaging the two opposed sides of a comb so as to clamp the comb in position, said comb being readily removable from the clamp member, by sliding, when it is desired to wash or replace the comb.
2. The combination as described in claim 1 and in which the universal joint may be frictionally locked in position.
3. The combination as described in claim 1 in which the handle terminates in a shaped hand grip.
