US. Patent Nov. 4, 1975 PICTURE FRAME BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates generally to picture frames and especially to a picture frame on which a decorative member having a floating appearance is provided. While picture frames have taken various forms, such picture frames generally have not been provided with a decorative type of bordering member which may be floatingly mounted as part of the picture frame through which a picture is exposed in an improved manner.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Generally speaking, a picture frame arrangement is provided, in accordance with the invention, in which a clear or opaque plastic supporting member has a rectangular-shaped cutout, for example, through which the picture held by the supporting member is exposed. A decorative floating member surrounds the cutout and applies a decorative portion against the side of the supporting member exposed to the viewer. The floating member, furthermore, has bent portions bearing against the internal surface of the cutout in the supporting member. These bent portions provide for the shadow-box effect of the picture frame. Tabs projecting from the bent portions of the decorative floating member are further bent to be pressed into recesses within a ledge-shaped portion surrounding the periphery of the cutout. The ledge-shaped portion is formed by a recess in the supporting member and provides a seat for a clear cover sheet of glass or plastic and for the picture. A backing plate or card is received within tracks fastened to the back of the supporting member and holds the picture within the ledge-shaped portion of the supporting member, with the decorative member blocking the tracks from view.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide an improved picture frame with a decorative floating member.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved picture frame in which the decorative member also provides a shadow-box effect.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved picture frame in which a picture may be held behind or within a ledge-shaped portion recessed within the main supporting frame member.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved picture frame in which a floating decorative member carried by a transparent or translucent supporting frame masks the appearance of the tracks for the picture and backing member.
Still other objects and advantages of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part be apparent from the specification and drawings.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features, properties, and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described, and the scope of the invention will be indicated in the claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS For a fuller understanding of the invention, reference is had to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the picture frame constructed in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the instant invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken alongline 22 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 33 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a partial plan view of the back side of the picture frame and shows the construction for clipping on the floating decorative member and retaining the picture in place by a track assembly, in accordance with the present invention; and
FIG. 5 is an end view of the picture frame when supported on a tabletop surface.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to FIGS. 1 and 2, the picture frame ar rangement indicated generally at 11 has a supportingmember 12 made of a plastic material. The plastic material can be transparent, translucent or opaque, and can be clear or colored. The supportingmember 12 has acutout 13 through which the picture is exposed to the viewer.
Theback side 12a of the supportingmember 12 is recessed to form aledge surface 14. A protective clear glass orplastic sheet 15 is introduced from the back side 1211 of the supportingmember 12 and bears against theledge surface 14. Apicture 16 is placed againstsheet 15. To hold thesheet 15 andpicture 16 against theledge surface 14, aneasel member 18 is provided which is slidably retained bytracks 19 secured to the back of the supportingmember 12. Theeasel 18 may have attached to it, for example, a hook 20 by which the frame assembly may be suspended along a wall surface. Thetracks 19 are fastened to the supportingmember 12 by means ofrivets 21.
Adecorative member 22 of copper sheet material. for example, has an exposedportion 23 running along thecutout 13 on thefront side 12b of the supportingmember 12. Thisdecorative member 22 floats" within supportingmember 12 about the cutout l3 and includesbent portions 24 which are substantially at right angles to theportion 23. Thebent portions 24 bear against the interior surface of the cutout in the supportingmember 12. Thebent portions 24 provide a shadow-box effect for the frame, while theportion 23 functions as a decorative element. The exposedportion 23 of floatingmember 22 also serves to hide or cover up the rivet head of therivets 21 on the front side of the supportingmember 12 and thetracks 19, which would be visible with a transparent or translucent supporting member. To allow bending of theportion 24 at right angles to theportion 23 without interference at the corners of thecutout 13, theportions 24 haveangular cuts 25 at the corners.
To prevent the floatingmember 22 from dropping out of the supportingmember 12, the floatingmember 22 is provided with projectingtabs 26 which are formed integral with thebent portions 24. After the decorative floatingmember 22 is inserted into thecutout 13 so that theportion 23 bears against the front surface of the supportingmember 12, thetabs 26 are bent at right angles to theportions 24 so that they are brought to bear against theledge surface 14. Thesurface 14, furthermore, is recessed at the locations of the projecting tabs, so as to form a seat for the tabs, while allowing thesurface 14 to remain a continuous planar surface after the tabs have been bent over to hold themember 22 in place. Theplanar surface 14, thereby, forms a bearing surface for thesheet 15, with the exter- 3 na] surface of thetabs 26 flush with thesurface 14. Therecess 27 which accommodates thetabs 26 within thesurface 14 may be seen in FIG. 3. With thebent portions 24 andtabs 26, thedecorative member 22 is floatingly held within thecutout 13.
In the embodiment above, the picture is assumed to be a photograph, for example, requiring a glass covering. Should the picture be in the form of an oil painting, however, requiring no protective glass covering over the viewing surface, then the protective glass is omitted and the picture becomes themember 15, while a spacer becomes themember 16.
Tracks 19 are arranged on opposite sides to allow sliding of theeasel 18 between them.Tabs 28 at one end of the tracks serve as a stop for the slidingeasel 18. Thus, after theeasel 18 is brought between the open ends of thetrack 19 and is slid along the guiding tracks, theeasel 18 is brought to a halt by thestops 28, which then locate the easel properly along the back side of the supportingmember 12. Thetrack 19 may be formed of copper sheet material, for example, and fastened to the supportingmember 12 byrivets 21 or other suitable fastening devices well known in the art.
For purposes of suspending or supporting the picture frame assembly, a hook or eye element 20 may be provided on the back surface of theeasel 18. The hook or eye element 20 serves particularly for suspending the picture frame assembly from a wall surface, for example. In the event that the picture assembly is to be supported .on atabletop surface 29, for example, an extendingarm 30 may be provided on the back of theeasel 18 in the conventional manner, as shown in FIG. 5.
The supportingmember 12 may be made of clear plastic material, wood or other suitable framing material. The peripheral edges of the supportingmember 12 may also have abevel 31 for purposes of providing additional decorative effects. The supportingmember 12 may also have a circular or elliptical shape, for example. in lieu of the rectangular shape shown in FIG. 1. In such construction, thecutout 13 may also assume a circular or elliptical shape correspondingly.
When the supportingmember 12 is a clear plastic material, the decorative floatingmember 22 serves to hide or cover up both therivets 21 and thetrack 19 attached to the supporting frame by the rivets. The supportingmember 12 can also be colored or be of opaque material, for example. The member held within the cutout of the supportingmember 12 may be of glass, clear plastic or an oil painting, for example.
If the supportingmember 12 is clear plastic, it may be possible to combine it withsheet 15 as a single piece without acutout 13. In such event,decorative member 22 would includeonly portion 23, which would be adhered tosurface 12b of the supporting member.
It will thus be seen that the objects set forth above, among those made apparent from the preceding description, are efficiently attained, and since certain changes may be made in the above article without de- 4 parting from the spirit and scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above. description and shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
