Primary ExaminerDaniel Blum [57] ABSTRACT A paint roller of an elongated cylindrical configuration having a closed hemi-spherical shaped end and an open end adapted to receive along the axis thereof an axle member of a handle which is detachably attached to the roller to permit rotation of the roller about its axis, the axle being slidingly engaged through a bushing inwardly of the roller with the end of the axle projecting from the roller being detachably engaged in a rotative manner by a collar member such that the roller is readily attached to and detached from the axle, the roller intended for use in providing paint to siding and the like of a home wherein the siding overlaps so as to have underside edges and face surfaces to be painted, the roller intended to apply paint with horizontal strokes to the face surface and with the curved closed end in engagement with the underside of the siding lap above the face surface being painted such that both the face surface and overlapping bottom edge of the siding member on top thereof is simultaneously painted.

Field of the Invention This invention relates generally to painting devices and more particularly to a novel and improved paint roller and handle therefor intended for applying paint to siding in a manner to paint simultaneously both the face surface of a length of siding and the overlapping bottom edge of a length of siding disposed immediately above the face surface being painted. The handle is specifically adapted for detachable attachment to the special roller of the present invention.
2. Description of the Prior Art Although paint rollers have been utilized for many years in the prior art for applying paint and the like to flat surfaces and to corners, there has long existed a need for an applicator of paint which is capable of painting siding of overlapping siding boards in a rapid and expedient manner with both the face surfaces and overlapping bottom edges of the siding members being simultaneously painted in a uniform and even manner. At present this is only obtainable by use of a paint brush, this being a slow procedure and providing brush marks and the like such that the finish adjacent the face surface or the bottom edge of the siding is not uniform with the finish of the other adjacent areas which were painted with paint rollers. Thus, while it has been a common practice to paint such adjacent surfaces with brushes, this has proved quite unsatisfactory because of the different surface finishes produced by brushes and paint roller applicators, and the slow and tedious process of painting such large surfaces with a brush.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention recognizes the difficulties in painting overlapping siding members of which the bottom edges must presently be painted with the time consuming and aggravating process of using a hand brush with the face surfaces of the siding then later being covered through use of a paint roller, the invention providing a novel solution thereto in the form of a cylindrical roller having a closed curved end with the circumference of the roller intended to engage the face surface of the siding to apply paint thereto and with the curved closed end of the roller intended to simultaneously engage the overlapping bottom edge of an adjacent siding member to simultaneously paint the same while painting the face surface of the lower siding member.
It is a feature of the present invention to provide a novel paint roller and holder therefor intended for the rapid and expedient painting of siding by simultaneously painting adjacent face surfaces and overhanging bottom edge surfaces of adjacent siding members.
A further feature of the present invention provides a novel paint roller and holder therefor adapted toapply a uniform paint finish to siding.
vStill a further feature of the present invention provides a paint roller and holder therefor which is relatively simple in its construction and which therefore may be readily manufactured at a relatively low cost and by simple manufacturing methods.
Yet still a further feature of the present invention provides a paint roller and holder therefor which is possessed of few parts and which therefore is unlikely to get out of order.

yet still a further feature of the present invention provides a paint roller and holder therefor which is easy to use and reliable and efficient in operation, and one which is rugged and durable and which therefore may be guaranteed by the manufacturer to withstand many years of intended usage.
Other features and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following descriptron.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now the drawings in detail there is illustrated a preferred form of a paint roller and holder therefor constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention and designated generally in its entirety by the reference numeral 10 and which is comprised of a'paint roller 11 and a handle member 12.
The paint roller 11 is of an elongated cylindrical configuration havingcylindrical side walls 21, a closed curvedouter end 22, and a closed inner end 23' provided with an opening centrally thereof and extending axially therethrough and having disposed concentrically thereabout and extending axially outwardly therefrom acollar member 25. Disposed inwardly ofside walls 21 andends 22 and 23 is an elongated bore 26 having disposed therein adjacentcurved end 22 and extending betweenside walls 21 interiorly thereof a support member 27 having an open endedbushing 28 mounted centrally thereof and extending therethrough with an axial bore 29 disposed in the bushing. The axis of bore 29 is axially aligned with the opening inend 23. The side walls and end surfaces of the roller may be made from any suitable satisfactory material such as metal, hard rubber, plastic, or the like with the outer circumference thereof covered with any suitable paint holding material to provide a desired nap completely about the circumference ofside walls 21 and the exteri or surface ofcurved end 22 for the holding of paint thereon in the application of the paint to the surface to be painted as will be later described. The preferred embodiment provides a nap manufactured of synthetic material and having fibers affixed thereto measuring approximately one-half inch in length.
The collar member is of an elongated cylindrical shape havingside walls 31, aback end 32 affixed to rollerinner end 23, afront end 33, and abore 34 extending axially through the collar member in alignment with the opening inend 23. Theside walls 31 are provided with a plurality of circumferally spaced apart longitudinally extendingslots 35 opening out of thefront end 33 and extending longitudinally through the side walls to terminate short ofback end 32. Theslots 35 divideside walls 31 into a plurality of resilient sections adapted for radial outward deflection with each section provided on the interior surface thereof with a radially inwardly directedprojection 36 having anapex 37, the projection being of a triangular cross-section, wedge-like in shape, conical in shape, or the like with theapex portions 37 defining a circle of a diameter less than the diameter ofbore 34.
The handle 12 includes anaxle 41 formed of an elongated cylindrical rod member having a terminal end 42 with the opposite end thereof being formed into a general offset configuration 43 as seen in FIG. 1 and terminating in afree end 44 spaced outwardly from the rollerinner end 23 and projecting outwardly to terminate in a gripping portion 45 adapted for an individual to grip the same in their hand when using the roller device. The diameter ofaxle 41 is slightly greater than the diameter of the circular opening defined betweenapex portions 37 ofcollar 25 with the axle provided adjacent section 43 with anannular groove 46 disposed thereabout and having an inner diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the circle defined byapex portions 37. Theaxle 41 is adapted to be aligned withbore 34 and 29 and then be axially inserted throughbore 34 and through the opening inend 23 until the terminal end 42 passes through bore 29 of bushing 28, this being the position at which thegroove 46 is engaged byapexes 37 to detachably retain the axle to the roller in a manner permitting rotation of the roller about the axis of the axle. It is to be understood that the sections ofside walls 31 ofcollar member 25 are deflected radially outwardly a slight distance and theaxle 41 passes betweenapexes 37, the collar member being formed of resilient material such that as soon asannular groove 46 is aligned withapexes 37 the same is engaged thereby for supporting theinner end 23 of the roller thereon.
In operation the roller 11 is dipped into paint, such as through the use of a conventional type paint can or the like. after which the roller is disposed adjacent the siding to be painted, generally designated byreference numeral 50, the axis of the roller being disposed normal to the longitudinal axis of thesiding members 51 and 52 with the roller nap along thecylindrical side surfaces 21 engaging the face surface oflowersiding member 52 and with the nap of the roller along curvedouter end 22 engaging the overhangingbottom edge 53 oftop siding member 51 such that as the roller is moved horizontally along thesiding member 52 it will simultaneously apply paint to both the face surface ofsiding member 52 and the overhangingbottom edge 53 oftop siding member 51.
It is to be understood that the form of this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that this invention is not to be limited to the exact arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings or described in this specification as various changes in the details of construction as to shape. size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of the novel concepts thereof, or the scope of the sub-joined claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed 1. A device intended for the applying of paint simultaneously to a face surface of one siding member and an adjacent bottom overlapping edge of an adjacent top siding member, said device comprising:
a roller of an elongated cylindrical shape having cylindrical side wall surfaces, a curved closed outer end, and a closed inner end, said side wall surfaces and end surfaces defining a bore interiorly thereof, said cylindrical side wall surfaces and said curved end surface provided with a nap of material adapted to hold paint for applying the same to a surface to be painted; handle member including an elongated cylindrically shaped rod like axle adapted to be received axially in said bore of said roller for said roller to rotate thereabout;
a support member disposed in said roller bore intermediate the interior surfaces of said cylindrical wall surfaces and adjacent said curved end, said support member provided with a bushing centrally thereof;
said bushing having an axial bore extending therethrough and disposed concentric with the axis of said roller;
said closed end of said roller having an opening disposed centrally thereof and extending axially therethrough in alignment with said bushing bore;
a collar member disposed concentric with said closed end opening and projecting axially outwardly from said closed end, said collar member having a bore extending therethrough disposed in substantial alignment with said closed end opening such that said axle is adapted to be rotatably supported in said aligned closed end opening and said bushing bore with said collar member detachably retaining said axle to said roller to permit rotation of said roller about said axle in opposite directions; and
said collar member comprises an elongated cylindrical open ended body member having cylindrical side walls, a back end affixed to said roller closed end, and a front end projecting outwardly therefrom, a plurality of circumferally spaced slots disposed in said side walls opening out of said front end and extending longitudinally through said side walls to a position short of said back end thereof, said collar member being manufactured of a resilient material, said slots dividing said collar member side wall surfaces into a plurality of sections, each of said sections provided on the interior surface thereof with a radially inwardly directed projection, each projection terminating in an apex portion spaced apart from the other apex portions of the other projections. the apex portions defining a circle having a diameter less than the diameter of said collar member bore and also less than the diameter of said axle, and said axle provided with an annular groove therein adapted to be engaged by said apex portions when said axle is in supported position in said roller bore with said axle terminal end rotatably supported in said bushing bore whereby the roller is detachably attached to the axle in a rotatable manner relative thereto.
