SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 385,256, dated June 26, 1888.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, ANTON C. EGGERS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Rubber Fountains, Water- Bottles, 850., of which the following is a speciiication,
This invcntion relates to an improved stopper for fountains, for syringes, water-bottles, and similar articles of rubber, the stopper being designed with a view to facilitate the filling of said fountains or bottles without any spilling of liquid and without removing the stopper from the neck of the fountains or bottles; and the invention consists of the combination, with the neck of a rubber fountain or waterbottle, of a rc-cnforcing sleeve having an interior screw-th read, a funnel-shaped extension above said sleeve, and a hollow screwplug fitted into the sleeve and provided with longitudinal slots or openings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a combined rubber fountain and water-bottle, showing the stopper in closed position. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the neck of the fountain or bottle, showing the stopper in open position, ready for filling thefountain or bottle; and Fig. 3 isa horizontal section on line a; m, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a rubber fountain, rubber water-bottle, or other liquid-receptacle made of rubber. The neck B of the fountain or bottle A is provided with an interiorly-threaded re-enforcing sleeve, B, and above the sleeve with a funnel, O, by which the fountain or bottle is conveniently filled with water or other suitable liquid. A hollow screw-plug, D, fits into the interiorlythreaded sleeve B of the neck B, and is provided with longitudinal slots or openings cl, which extend from a. point at some distance below the top flange, d, of the plug to a point near the lower end of the same, so that when the plug D is screwed entirelyinto the sleeve B it closes the fountain or bottle A, so that no liquid can escape. WVhen the plug D is partly unscrewed, as shown in Fig. 2, the slots d extend above the re-enforcing sleeve of the neck 13 and permit the direct filling of the fountain or bottle.
The fountain A is provided at the lower end with an outlet-tube, c, and a detachable screw-plug, E, which is connected by a chain or other suitable device, 6, to the outlettnbe e of the fountain, as shown in Fig. 1. When the fountain is used .with a syringe, the bottom plug, E, is removed and the outlet-tube 6 connected with the tube leading to the syringe. The plug D is then partly opened, so that the slots (1 of the same serve as vents to perinitthe running out of the water from the fountain, which would not be the case if the plug were closed. \Vhen the fountain is to be used as a water-bottle, it is filled with water, closed at both ends by the plugs D and E, and then used in the regular manner. The neck B is provided with a hangcr,f, and the plug E with a ring, 6", so that thefountain may be hung up at either end.
The advantage of my improved construction is that the fountain or bottle can be filled directly by the funnel O and the hollow screwplug D without removing the latter and Without spilling any liquid, as in the fountains heretofore in use, in which an interiorlythreaded cap screws over an exteriorlythreaded sleeve, around which the funnel is arranged. Another advantage is that the funnel extends above the head of the plug, so that the plug is protected against being acct dentally turned while the fountain or bottle is in use, which would not be the case if a stop cock were used in connection with the neck of the fountain or bottle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the neck of a rubber fountain or water-bottle, of an interiorlythreaded re-enforcing sleeve,,a funnel extending above said sleeve, and a hollow screwplug having longitudinal slots or openings, substantially as set forth.
